United Methodist Women Uwharrie District News Western North Carolina Conference 1 st Quarter Newsletter January, 2017 Deborah s President Notes Hope for 2017 Ladies I am so excited to serve as the new President of the Uwharrie District. Please pray for me and the team. I know, with your help, things will go great. My greatest hope for this year is that we can get more young people involved. A little bit about me, I attend Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church (part of the Empire Charge) in Seagrove. I have two children, Kenita and Kesha, two son-in-laws, six grandchildren and am married to Kenneth Matthews. I love to cook, sing, and do all sorts of crafts. The most important thing in my life is to know Christ for myself. And of course, I also enjoy being a United Methodist woman. I hope that everyone has had a great holiday season and is ready for a fresh new start in 2017. This year is gearing up to be a great year full of amazing events and great things for The United Methodist Women. Start marking your calendar for the up coming events hosted by Uwharrie and our Western NC Conference. If I can help you please don't hesitate to call or e-mail me matthewsdeborah8@gmail.com, 336-879-2893, or 336-465-3104. Deborah Matthews, President Be Just. Be Green. Climate change is not an equal opportunity phenomenon. While climate change affects everyone, it does not affect everyone equally. The simple truth is that the poorest people in industrialized and developing nations suffer the estimated 70% of the world s poor. Deepen your Spirituality & Broaden your Understanding of Mission WITH THE READING PROGRAM The Reading Program encourages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and to broaden your understanding of our mission work. The Reading Program Leads to Action! For 140 years, United Methodist Women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to: Expand understanding of and participation in God s mission. Increase sensitivity to all human beings their needs, interests and concerns. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission. All UMW members should be involved in our Reading Program! You may read for your own understanding or you may read to others: shut-ins/homebound persons, children and youth. During Christmas I was able to share the Reading Program Book, Great Joy not only with my UMW Circle but 28 family members as we gathered to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The opportunities are endless! All levels of reading are included. Of special interest are the books for youth and children. Program Resources including the reading program books are available at all district and conference events. Come prepared to be rewarded! Shirley McAnulty, Program Resources GET MONEY FOR COLLEGE! WNCC United Methodist Women Scholarship Program The Scholarship Program assists members of the United Methodist Church who live within the bounds of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church pursue an academic course leading to a church-related vocation other than ordained ministry. Find your Unit and Nurturing Partner in the list below. Please welcome them into your meetings and events. In fact, from now until August 24, 2017 when you invite a District or Conference Officer to your unit gathering you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a CPR Feel the LUV care package with a 2018 Program Book, Prayer Calendar and more. If I can help in any way as we continue Nurturing Each Other please contact me at 704-474-4764 or accnurse@rocketmail.com. Notes from the Treasurer Here we are at the start of 2017, a new year to do mission work for women, children and youth. I look forward to a good year of working with both new and returning Unit Treasurers. The 2016 Uwharrie District Pledge to Mission was $83,000. While we didn t reach our goal, we did reach $63,997, which is still very significant. I appreciate everyone s hard work and dedication in the district towards making this. Our pledge for 2017 is $74,000, and if we all work together, I know we can meet this. Treasurers, if you have not sent me your Unit s 2017 pledge form with your contact information and your list of recipients of pins or cards for 2016, please do so as soon as possible. If you need a form, please let me know. It is not too late to make a pledge for 2017. Remember, making a pledge and then meeting this pledge is required to be a Mission Today Unit. Many Units also try to achieve giving in all five channels of undesignated mission giving. The five channels of giving are: Pledge to Mission Special Mission Recognition Gift to Mission Gift in Memory World Thank Offering Just a $5.00 donation in each category meets this requirement. If you have questions regarding what any of these categories means, please don t hesitate to ask me or any District Officer. First quarter remittances are due to me by February 28. Treasurers will be receiving a letter from me around the first of February about what to include in this remittance. If you need anything or have any questions, please feel free to call, text, or email me. I look forward to meeting all of you at district and conference events. response Diane James, Treasurer the print and digital magazine of women in mission! www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/response 2017 WESTERN NC CONFERENCE VISION, LOVE OFFERING, & FINANCIAL GOAL Keeping Their Memory Green Conference Love Offering A Gift to Mission in Celebration and Gratitude for our Mission Giving Leadership. 15 Years and Counting! I hope everyone is well and energized for 2017. I look forward to working with you and meeting you at District events. I hope everyone has sent in their end of year reports. It is important that we have a current list of your officers with their addresses and emails so you can be kept up to date on upcoming District and Conference events. If you have not received a call or visit from your nurturing partner in 2016 please let me know. Our goal this year is for each unit to have a least one visit from a District team member. I am looking forward to seeing you at all of our Uwharrie District events in 2017. Please come up and introduce yourself! Carolyn Thompson, Secretary Page 8 Uwharrie District News January, 2017

Stack 'Em Up! Help us Intercept Human Trafficking at Super Bowl LI on February, 5 th Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery. According the U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons 2015 Report, the number of adults and children currently in forced labor, bonded labor and forced prostitution is 20.9 million. You ll find victims on the streets, in houses, in trailers and on farms. Victims of human trafficking can be landscaping and agricultural workers, panhandlers, day laborers, factory and sweatshop workers, hotel workers, and housekeepers. Victims are exploited by the service industries in restaurants, bars, strip clubs, nail salons, and similar businesses. Right now traffickers in many American cities are exploiting workers and sexually abusing women and girls. This Super Bowl Sunday, help us stop modern-day slavery. Let s intercept the traffickers and reverse the momentum. Please Pray: Glorious Creator, please bless and uplift those in the battle against this horrible sin. You know that it is frustrating, hard and sometimes dangerous for them to take a stand. Please give them hope, continued courage and protection from anyone or any system that works against them. #UMWBoxEmUP Learn more at unitedmethodistwomen.org/intercept National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888
