Faculty of Management Sciences Name of Department Management COURSE OUTLINE - Quality Management Systems (BQM612S) STATEMENT ABOUT ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY All staff and students of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), upon signing their employment contracts and registration forms, commit themselves to abide by the policies and rules of the institution. The core activity of NUST is learning and in this respect academic honesty and integrity is very important to ensure that learning is valid, reliable and credible. NUST therefore does not condone any form of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and cheating on tests and assessments, amongst other such practices. NUST requires students to always do their own assignments and to produce their own academic work, unless given a group assignment. Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: Using the ideas, words, works or inventions of someone else as if it is your own work. Using the direct words of someone else without quotation marks, even if it is referenced. Copying from writings (books, articles, webpages, other students assignments, etc.), published or unpublished, without referencing. Syndication of a piece of work, all or part of an assignment, by a group of students, unless the assignment was a legitimate group assignment. The borrowing and use of another person s assignment, with or without their knowledge or permission. Infringing copyright, including documents copied or cut and pasted from the internet. Asking someone else to prepare an assignment for you or to write or sit an assessment for you, whether this is against payment or not. Re-submitting work done already for another course or programme as new work, so-called self-plagiarism. Bringing notes into an examination or test venue, regardless of whether the notes were used to copy or not. Receiving any outside assistance in any form or shape during an examination or test. All forms of academic dishonesty are viewed as misconduct under NUST Student Rules and Regulations. Students who make themselves guilty of academic dishonesty will be brought before a Disciplinary Committee and may be suspended from studying for a certain time or may be expelled. All students who are found guilty of academic dishonesty shall have an appropriate endorsement on their academic record, which will never be erased. COURSE INFORMATION COURSE CODE AND TITLE: Quality Management Systems - (BQM612S) DEPARTMENT: Management PROGRAMME: Bachelor of Business Management CONTACT HOURS: 4 hours per week (Full Time) and 3 hours per week (Part Time) 1

NQF LEVEL AND CREDIT: 7 and 12 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course aims to equip students with knowledge of how quality management systems developed over time; what the different quality philosophies, tools and techniques are and the reasons why it is necessary to continuously improve the quality of products and/or services. PRE-REQUISITES: Must have completed and passed all second year course of new Bachelor of Business Management degree program (BBM) COURSE EQUIVALENCIES: None COURSE DELIVERY METHODS: Straight Lectures wherein the lecturer presents information to students using a variety of teaching aids such as multi-media equipment, overhead projector, whiteboard study guide materials etc and modes like library visitation. Project based learning. In this case students are given a particular project to carry out and are required to apply their theoretical knowledge to provide solutions. Seminars, conferences attendance and workshops conducted by subjects experts from industries. Class discussions-students read a section of the textbook in preparation for the lecture and then discuss salient points or answer questions based on the reading material. Group work based on questions or problem solving assignments where I might act as facilitator Watching videos and analyzing the issues that comes up. Role playing. STUDENT LEARNING Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course students will, through assessment activities, show evidence of their ability to: Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the history of and the different philosophies of quality management systems development with specific reference to Quality Control (QC); Quality Assurance (QA); Total Quality Management (TQM); Six Sigma (SS) and Lean Six Sigma (LSS). Analyse the key elements of an effective quality management system. Distinguish between the different tools for quality analysis and improvement. Apply statistical process control (SPC) as a quality control process to improve the quality of a product and/or service in organisations. Evaluate the application of lean thinking (LT) and just-in-time (JIT) in manufacturing as well as in service organisations. Analyse the ISO9000: 2000 quality management standards range and its role in quality improvement. Apply quality management principles to management of quality for products and services. 4 Managing Quality and Six Sigma Apply quality management systems (Six Sigma in particular) to achieve organizational strategic goals. 5 Statistical Process Control Apply quality management tools and techniques. 6 Lean Thinking and JIT concept Define process planning and control activities that impact on quality. 7 ISO 9000 QMS Understand benchmarking and setting of standards for quality management IMPORTANT DATES: NOTE: The following dates are subject to change based on the needs of the students at the lecturer s prerogative. Students will be notified ahead of time of any changes. Date Important Information Friday 7 th Sept 2017 (During Class Hours) Test 1 - Written Closed-Book Friday 14 th Sept 2017 Submission of group assignments to the lecturer by 2pm latest. Friday 21 st Sept 2017 (During Class Hours) Special or Make Up-Test- Writing Closed-Book October/November/2017 End of semester Examination - Written Closed-Book A minimum of 50% requirement for the semester mark (SM) in order to qualify for entrance to the examination. SM contributes 50% towards final mark (FM) and the examination mark (EM) contributes 50% to FM. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION FOR SEMESTER MARK (SM): Assessment Weight Test 1 60% Assignment 30% Presentation 10% Total: 100% As approved by the Senate, students who due to religious obligations are unable to sit for tests, examinations etc on Fridays/Saturdays must register with the Departmental Secretary at the beginning of the session. Special arrangements will be made only for those who have registered. One test will have to be written, contributing 60% towards the SM. One Group Assignment needs to be submitted. The assignment contributes 30% towards the SM. The group assignment needs to be presented in class and each group member will have to make an individual contribution during the presentation. Each group member could be asked questions pertaining to the group assignment submitted and each group member should be able to answer questions on all aspects of the group assignment submitted. The individual responses would be evaluated and contributes 10% towards the SM for the respective individual group members. A minimum of 50% SM is required in order to sit for the final examination. A final examination will be written during the end of semester examinations period. The examination will cover all the topics as shown in the course schedule above. The examination mark (EM) will contribute 50% and the SM will contribute 50% in the calculation of the final mark (FM) for this course. A final mark of 50% or more will constitute a pass mark for this course. 4

Please see appendices 1 & 2 for guidelines on how group assignment and presentations will be assessed. NB: The weights of tests assignments, semester and examination marks can be changed with due approvals before the event takes place IMPORTANT Make-Up Test: There will be no make-up test except in very special circumstances and the highest mark obtainable for make-up test is 50%. NOTE: Students who do not obtain a pass mark after having written the make-up test will not be given further opportunities. Other You have one week from the first date of returning your test or assignment paper in class to request for a review of your test paper if necessary. Upon such request, your paper will be remarked and the following could result: 1. Retention of original mark; or 2. Award a higher mark; or 3. Award a lower mark. After having reviewed your test paper, my decision is final. No other opportunities for review of test paper will be offered. COURSE POLICIES General Academic Policies: It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with and adhere to NUST s Policies. These Policies can be found in NUST Prospectus or online at www.nust.na/prospectus. Supplementary Policies: Class attendance is very important. You are hereby implored to attend lectures regularly. (Kindly take note of specific regulations relating to this within the 2017 Namibia University of Science & Technology Prospectus) o Missing lectures is normally a significant contributory factor to poor performance in tests, assignments and the final examination. o In the event that you happen to miss a lecture, make sure that you get the material[s] covered in class from your colleagues, early enough and cover whatever was taught on your own. Greater emphasis will be placed on the practical application of theories, analytical thinking and critical reasoning rather than the mere regurgitation (repetition) of memorised facts You are expected to read ahead of the class and make sure you cover in depth all the topics! FAILURE TO PAY FEES: A student who fails to pay his/her fees may not be allowed to write the examination and if allowed, the results will be withheld until all outstanding fees are paid in full. Describe the Quality Management System of an organization you have chosen in Namibia. Discuss how the system has been used to achieve the operational and strategic goals of the organization. Obtain as much as possible all the information related to Quality Management including structures, tools and techniques being used by the organization. The information required for this assignment may be obtained through desk-top sources, internet, newspapers etc and physical interview/visit to the Organization. Assignment is due for submission on 14 th of September 2017 by 7pm latest. See Appendices 1 & 2 for guidance on criteria for markings.
