Residency and Licensing Overview, 2009 Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) British Columbia Update Alberta Update Ontario Update
RESIDENCY & LICENSING CaRMS Update Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) must be attending or have graduated from a school listed with the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), must have written and passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE); and have Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency status in Canada. It is recommended that those seeking to attain a residency in Canada also complete the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE1). 2,595 residency positions for Canadian medical graduates (CaRMS Statistics, 2009) 309 residencies not filled after first round 294 residency positions were filled by IMGs in first round (2009) Total of 392 IMGs matched across all rounds IMGs matched to a residency place will have to commit to return of service Tips for improving your chances in the CaRMS residency match: Complete some of your clinical rotations in Canada, preferably in the Canadian university teaching hospital system Family medicine is an underserviced specialty Perorming well on the MCCQE1 Contact: CaRMS www.carms.ca

RESIDENCY & LICENSING Alberta Update Completing Postgraduate Process in another Jurisdiction Graduates with a medical degree and completion of postgraduate training in Australia or US are eligible to apply for a licence to practice in Alberta through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) Alberta: CPSA recognises international postgraduate training Requirement is for training to be of similar length in duration and nature as Canada (e.g. family medicine 2 years) Upon completion candidates would have to undergo a clinical practice based assessment Certification from either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada Candidates would then apply for a licence through CPSA Contact: College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) http://www.cpsa.ab.ca/services/registration_department/alberta_medical_licence/independent_practic e.aspx

Certification By Examination for Family Medicine Residents Residency eligibility for certification by examination applies to: Graduates of CFPC accredited family medicine residency programs. Graduates of postgraduate family medicine training programs in jurisdictions where the accreditation standards have been judged by the CFPC to be equivalent to the accreditation standards in Canada. Approved jurisdictions with equivalent accreditation standards for family medicine training include: United States of America: Graduates of family medicine residency programs that have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Australia: Graduates of Australian General Practice Vocational Training programs that have been accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and meet the standards of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) In order to be considered for residency eligibility, all candidates must: 1. be registered with the College of Family Physicians of Canada as a resident member. 2. have completed a medical degree and acceptable accredited postgraduate training in family medicine. 3. Residents must be recommended to the CFPC by the dean for postgraduate medical education and the postgraduate director of the Department of Family Medicine or by the institution s equivalent officers. 4. Residents are eligible to sit the examination in the last six months of their training program. 5. All credentials obtained outside Canada must be source verified by the Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC).
RESIDENCY & LICENSING Ontario Update 2. Certification Without Examination Recognized Training and Certification outside Canada The CCFP designation may be granted without examination by the CFPC to those physicians who have: 1. successfully graduated from accredited postgraduate training in family medicine in a jurisdiction where the standards for accreditation of postgraduate family medicine training and the criteria for certification are judged comparable and acceptable to the CFPC; 2. achieved certification in that jurisdiction; 3. met all other requirements for Certification with the CFPC; 4. met all other requirements for licensure and apply for or are granted registration to practice in a Canadian province or territory. Approved jurisdictions include: United States of America: Graduates of family medicine residency training programs that have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and who also are Diplomats of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Australia: Graduates of Australian General Practice Vocational Training programs that have been accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and meet the standards of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and who also hold Fellowship in the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) Note: These programs vary from Canadian programs in that training in intrapartum care is not compulsory. Health Force Ontario Initiative In December 2008, CPSO introduced Pathway 4 opening the door for CSAs to register in Ontario to practice medicine: Successfully complete residency program accredited by Accreditation council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGMA); Been certified by the US Specialty Board; Successfully completed the USMLE Received an independent or full licence to practice without restrictions in the US Conditions on certificate of registration: Physicians must practice with mentor/supervisor until successfully completed assessment; Physicians must undergo an assessment after completing a minimum of 12 months of practice in Ontario No requirement to complete the Canadian medical examinations via this route 51% of Foreign trained doctors matched to a residency in US. According to Thea Watson (Senior Coordinator, Health Force Ontario Marketing and Recruitment Agency) she has never met a Canadian who completed an Australian medical degree who did not match in the US.
