Course Description This course is an introduction to the basic principles of nutrition as they relate to the health and physical wellness of individuals. The topics covered include macronutrients, micronutrients, diet and health, weight management, dietary analysis, current nutrition trends, food safety, and physical fitness. Recommended Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 84 Student Learning Outcomes 1. Interpret and evaluate information provided on a Nutrition Fact Panel. 2. Analyze a mainstream nutrition article and evaluate the reliability and credibility of nutritional content. 3. Apply current nutrition standards and dietary guidelines to analyze and evaluate personal dietary intake. Course Materials Textbook: Schiff, Wendy. Nutrition for Healthy Living, 4 th edition (This textbook is sold as a bundled package with Connect Plus.) NOTE: Connect is required for this course. MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL NOT BE OFFERED. Dietary Analysis Project Additional software is not required. We will be using the FREE government website www.choosemyplate.gov to access the SuperTracker program. Late projects will NOT be accepted. Assignments ALL assignments must be submitted on or before specified due dates. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE PENALIZED BY 20% EACH DAY PAST THE DUE DATE. Please note that after a certain date, points will no longer be attainable. *You will have access to all available resources throughout the semester. For that reason, there will not be any opportunities for extra credit.
