MIAA Football Alignment Development (2017-2020) 1. Using the October 1, 2015 male enrollment data, schools were sorted in each section (largest to smallest) to create base divisions with the following number of teams (see Base Division by Enrollment column): North Division 1 12 teams Division 2 12 teams Division 3 12 teams Division 4 12 teams Division 5 12 teams Division 6 11 teams Division 7 11 teams Division 8 12 teams South Division 1 12 teams Division 2 12 teams Division 3 12 teams Division 4 12 teams Division 5 13 teams Division 6 13 teams Division 7 13 teams Division 8 14 teams Central Division 1 9 teams Division 2 9 teams Division 3 9 teams Division 4 9 teams Division 5 9 teams Division 6 9 teams West Division 1 9 teams Division 2 10 teams Division 3 10 teams Division 4 10 teams *Cooperative teams were placed in the base divisions according to the enrollment of the largest school in the program. 2. The following factors were added to create an adjustment in placement from the base division for schools that qualified in one or more categories (see Total column): Vocational Schools Moved down three divisions (-3) Urban Schools Moved down two divisions (-2) Defined as schools that have student populations more than 50% High Needs and 40% Economically Disadvantaged, or a combined number over 90 from these two categories, according to the 2015-16 Selected Populations Report from the Massachusetts Department of Education. Cooperative Teams Placed in the base division according to the enrollment of the largest school in the program and received a 1 in the Coop category. Private Schools Placed in the base division according to enrollment and received a 1 in the Private category. The following Roster factor was included in the calculation, only if schools qualified in one or more of the above categories. Participation data was provided by football playing schools according to the total number of football participants in all levels of the high school program (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman). Roster Less than 25 players Moved down two divisions (-2) 25-40 players Moved down one division (-1) 41-60 players No movement (0) 61-80 players Moved up one division (+1) 81 or more players Moved up two divisions (+2) A Total adjustment number was calculated utilizing the factors above to determine the corresponding number of divisions a school was moved from its original placement in the base division (see Total column). Private Schools and Cooperative Teams: Schools that received a 2 in the Total category were moved up one division from the base division. Schools that received a 3 in the Total category were moved up two divisions from the base division. West Section: Schools that received a -2 in the Total category were moved down one division from the base division. Schools that received a -3 in the Total category were moved down two divisions from the base division. 3. After the movement of schools described in step #2, schools with the next highest enrollment that had not already been moved down filled the number of open spots according to the original number of teams established in each base division. If the lowest division in a section was filled with schools that received negative Total adjustments, the schools originally placed in that division were moved up to fill the open spaces in the higher divisions.
