Saint Joseph Catholic School Newsletter S U M M E R 2 0 1 5 SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: Brevard County Catholic Schools Art Show Academic Bowl 2015 Honor Roll VBS 2015 Graduation 2015 2015-2016 School Start Open House Tuesday, August 11, 2015 1:30-3:00pm Stop by to meet your new teacher, see your new classroom and drop off your school supplies. Make sure you pick up your parent package from your oldest child s class. It contains paperwork that must be filled out and returned on the first day of school. Supply Sales Tuesday, August 11, 2015 1:00-3:30pm Purchase the supplies needed for the 2015-2016 School Year. The supply lists that were sent home have a list of items that are to be purchased at the school. These items will be available this day. Uniform Sales Friday, July 17, 2015 1:00pm - 6:00pm Sir Walter Uniforms will be on campus to sell uniforms for the 2015-2016 School Year. Having this earlier date will allow for special orders to be in before the start of school. School Start Date Wednesday, August 12, 2015 (early dismissal) General Parent Meeting Wednesday, August 19, 2015 6:15-9:00pm There is a mandatory parent meeting scheduled for the above date. The meeting will start with parents visiting the elementary grades to meet the teacher. All grades will then meet in the cafeteria for a general meeting. The evening will complete with the parents of middle schoolers meeting with the middle school teachers. New Parent Social & Orientation Monday, August 17, 2015 6:00pm New parents are invited to join us in the Library for a meet and greet. Following the social, parents will meet in Room 201 for orientation.

Each Grade from Kindergarten through Grade 8 were represented in a combination of 2D and 3D works of art. Each teacher has prepared Summer Reading Expectations for your child and several of the grade levels have included a reading log for your child to keep track of the books they have read. Reading logs can be found in your child s summer assignment on our website. Summer Math Expectations Students in grades 1 through 5 have IXL Math expectations for the summer as was sent home in your child s Report Card. Students entering grades 6 through 8 have required math worksheets to complete. If you have misplaced your worksheets, new ones can be found on our website under the Parent heading.

PAGE 4 Avid Reader Awards At the awards ceremony on the last day of school, select students were given the Avid Reader Award. This award, which consists of a certificate and a $10.00 gift card to Barnes & Noble, is given to students that either earned the most points earned/tests passed/words read in the Scholastic Reading Counts program or showed the greatest improvement in the Scholastic Reading Inventory program. We would like to thank seventh grade volunteers for all the time and creativity that they put into the reception. Special Awards Rotary Honor Roll Outstanding Student Award went to Rachel Thomas. Sarah Davis is this year s Salutatorian. This year s Valedictorian is Rachel Thomas. Class Awards At graduation, one Class Award is presented for each subject of study. Each graduating 8 th grader who wins a class award receives a $15 Barnes & Noble gift card. These are sponsored by Saint Joseph s School Board. This year s recipients are: Religion... Rachel Thomas Scholarships Each year scholarships are awarded to students who are planning on attending Melbourne Central Catholic in the fall. This year s recipients are: Knights of Columbus and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Palm Bay Chapter #7408 awarded $500 each to Jean-Paul Ay and Noel Acosta. The National Junior Honor Society awarded $500 to Kendra Cook. The St. Joseph Student Council Spirit of Saint Joseph Scholarship awarded $500 to Claire Lockhart. Student Council and NJHS merged funds to create the St. Joseph Excelsior Scholarship and awarded $500 to Chloe Tesnow. The James M. Berkery III & Anthony Berkery Scholarship in memory of Anthony Berkery and his father, James, sponsored by the Berkery family, awarded $1000 to Rachel Thomas. The Pastor s Scholarship was awarded to Benjamin Peña. Lourdes Ridyard Scholarship awarded $500 to Elio Ortiz.

PAGE 6 Academic Bowl 2015 SJCS Par cipants On Friday, April 24, students from our 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades participated in an Academic Bowl at Melbourne Central Catholic against other Catholic Schools in Brevard County. All of the Catholic Schools in the county were represented: Saint Joseph, Our Lady of Lourdes, Ascension, Holy Name of Jesus, Our Savior, St. Teresa, St. Mary and Divine Mercy. Our students faired well at the competition.
