Looking back with gratitude to all the Jesuits and lay partners who have built Ateneo de Zamboanga University ; looking around and seeing opportunities and challenges in the face of poverty, conflict, globalization and climate change; and looking forward with hope in the collective energy of our people and inspired by the Ignatian spirit of mission to the world, we commit ourselves to this vision and mission. COMMUNITY VISION We share a spiritual vision of a new Mindanao --- diverse communities enjoying peace based on healing and justice, and sustaining a development that nurtures faith, culture and environment, a Mindanao fully integrated in a country that is governed with integrity, providing total human security especially to the poor and the hungry, as it engages in local and global solidarity: a new Mindanao at the heart of a new Philippines. UNIVERSITY MISSION Ateneo de Zamboanga University realizes this vision by its twofold mission of (1) advancing leadership education and (2) advocating social transformation, always drawing out from the best of our Filipino, Catholic and Jesuit tradition: Filipino in the promotion of a deep love of country, as expressed in active citizenship, creative entrepreneurship, and cultural and ecological stewardship of all the nation s tangible and intangible heritage, with a special dedication to the wellbeing of island Mindanao; Catholic in the profession of faith in the God of Jesus Christ, who reveals himself in the wonders of creation, in the history of salvation, in his word and sacrament, in the struggle for liberation, in devotion to Mary, in communion with the Church and friendship among all peoples of dialogue; and Jesuit in the propagation of a profound sense of finding God in all things, manifested in the development of arts and sciences, of business and industry, of law and philosophy; a zeal for both action and contemplation; a passion for the frontiers of humanity s search for justice, peace and harmony with all of creation. In Summary PRO DEO ET PATRIA

In the Service of God and Country UNIVERSITY STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS Over the years, Ateneo de Zamboanga University has practiced a way of being a leader in the community by linking with others as partners. This leadership by partnership shall be our basic approach in fulfilling our mission and shall characterize our movement toward excellence, spirituality, and citizenship. Excellence means being leader-partner in the passionate search for truth that leads to service. This involves continuous up-scaling of our instruction, engagement in rigorous and relevant research, critical and creative publication and production, as well as proactive networking with other educational institutions, both local and global. Spirituality means being leader-partner in the formation of conscience that leads to true worship. This involves growing in faith that promotes justice, transforms culture, expands dialogue with other religious traditions, and promotes harmony with nature, all in the context of serving the community. Citizenship means being leader-partner in the work of institutions that promote the common good. This involves teaching, learning and practicing citizenship duties and rights, skills and habits, as well as actual engagement in critical issues such as peace, development, governance and environment.

KEY OFFICES IN ADZU S SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND REHABILITATION EFFORTS ATENEO RESEARCH CENTER (ARC) The Ateneo de Zamboanga University, recognizing its responsibility to keep the educational community in touch with its internal and external realities, continuously energizes the Ateneo Research Center (ARC). This is done by taking an active role in the generation of research projects and by collaborating in and/or supporting significant research endeavors whether initiated by members of the school community or by its various constituencies. The research agenda of the center include Peace and Culture, Science and Environment, Governance, Sustainable Environment, Health and development, Gender and Development, Education and Development, Business Entrepreneurship, and Information Technology. At present, the research center has a number of research materials in its library, encompassing institutional, external, and office-initiated researches in a span of its 20 years of existence. The ARC has been one of the dependable research centers in the region. Various local government agencies have already partnered with ARC in relevant research endeavours. The Ateneo Research Center establishes a dynamic research culture rooted on sound scientific inquiry committed to quality research and publication; genuine partnerships within and across disciplines and institutions; extensive support for research endeavours geared towards addressing critical issues concerning the environment, peace and development, education, health, governance, entrepreneurship, and information technology. ATENEO CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP & GOVERNANCE (ACLG) The ACLG, in correspondence with the University s twofold mission of advancing leadership education and advocating social transformation, seeks to respond to various governance and leadership challenges in Mindanao through: (1) value-based capacity building amongst local government leaders, civil servants, and civil society organizations; (2) empowerment of private citizens and minority groups via awareness and education campaigns, community-based programs, and advocacies; (3) engaging current socio-political issues in partnership with local stakeholders;

and (4) conducting sound research that would inform future public policies, health programs, and other prospective undertakings. At present, the office is the academic partner of the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP) in Zamboanga Peninsula. As the academic partner, the office conducts leadership training, coaching and mentoring sessions to the identified Local Chief Executives (LCEs) of the different municipalities enrolled in the program. ATENEO PEACE INSTITUTE (API) The API engages people in peace building by changing mindsets, building relationships, and transforming individuals and institutions to be advocates of peace empowered to create and sustain peaceful and just lives, relationships, structures, and communities. The API upholds the primacy of education as a catalyst for peaceful social transformation. API has two main programs: the Peace Education Program and the Peace Advocacy Program. Support programs include: Peace Leadership and Governance, Partnerships and Networking, Research and Publications, and Staff Development. These include curriculum and module development on peace concepts that are tailor-fitted to the users. The office also conducts Culture of Peace (COP) training and workshops to ZamBaSulTa groups and other local beneficiaries. Cultural sensitivity and appreciation is also one of the priority programs of the office. This is done by conducting culture-based activities like community immersions, symposiums, cultural shows and actual visits to different ethnic tribes and communities. In the recent Zamboanga Stand-off, the office was mainly involved in conducting community healing sessions in the five (5) barangays that were affected by the conflict. API also conducted community healing to adults and children in partnership with different government and non government organizations. ATENEO CENTER FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS (ACCA) The Ateneo Center for Culture and the Arts is a leader-partner in cultural stewardship and artistic development in Western Mindanao. It specializes in creating and sustaining a community of engaged and collaborative artist-advocates for social transformation sharing a common spiritual vision of a new Mindanao.

In its desire to nurture meaningful collaborations with different communities outside the university, the ACCA brought its activities to places where its intervention is needed the most. During the rehabilitation phase of the City from the conflict between the MNLF faction and the government troops, the office conducted the Pahingalay: Araw ng Paghilom in the evacuation centers. This activity includes art workshops, puppet shows, and story-telling which promote peace, healing and understanding of the situation of the victims during the time of the conflict. Moreover, the ACCA builds its expertise in strengthening an environment where creativity, innovativeness, and critical thinking are encouraged among the students, faculty, staff, and partner communities of ADZU, through the integration of culture and arts in curricular and extracurricular activities. The center also promotes the art creations of the local artists through the Gallery of the Peninsula Archipelago (GPA). The GPA is a venue where ADZU is able to advocate the best of culture and arts practices in Western Mindanao. CENTER FOR COMMUNITY EXTENSION SERVICES (CCES) The CCES works in partnership with marginalized communities and with other development organizations towards the improvement of the quality of life in the city. This is done by providing development programs and services to marginalized and isolated communities in the city, the peninsula, and its neighboring island provinces, through building capacities and partnerships. The primary programs of the office are directed towards education, health, and livelihood. The programs are anchored from people s organization mechanism, where individuals are first and foremost empowered to have a collective impact on their communities. The activities of the office are wide and varied from training, capacity building, livelihood assistance, health advocacy, sustainable agriculture and care for environment. The office identified east and west coast barangays, including the barangays who were victims of the siege, as beneficiaries of its programs. The education programs include pre-school and Adult Learning System (ALS) where the office develops modules that are sensitive to the Indigenous People (IP). Health advocacy in the communities is being done through feeding programs, health and nutrition lectures, and through implementation of the Family Health Guardian (FHG) system in different households. Livelihood programs are also being pursued by the office by training the beneficiaries on how to better take care of their agricultural products and providing technical assistance in sustainable agriculture practices. The livelihood projects being introduced to the communities are proenvironment,

especially to some barangays where the CCES initiated a water system project, in which the caring for the water shed is an important factor for the sustainability of the water supply. CCES works in partnership with different international and local non-government organizations in attaining its vision of an empowered society. COLLEGE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING OFFICE (CGCO) The College Guidance and Counseling Office of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University is a serving component of the University community, envisioning itself as the center of excellence in students counselling services and counselors training for the region and beyond. The CGCO is one of the most established Guidance and Counselling offices in the region. Its expertise in counselling has been strongly depended upon by the government especially in handling the psycho-social healing of the victims of the siege in 2013. The CGCO was tapped to run healing and debriefing sessions in Zamboanga City schools before the resumption of their regular operations as one aspect of rehabilitation. The CGCO is also one of the credible testing and measurement centers in the region, giving objective and comprehensive results to different employers and organizations outside the university. For this office, counselling is not just information but formation in order to affect the transformation of the person for God and country. SOCIAL AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE INVOLVEMENT (SACSI) The office serves as a witness to the social realities of the larger society; and being so, convey the facts from the University of Life to the Ateneo academe to develop a sense of social commitment among the students, faculty and staff of our community to create a just, humane, and God-inspired society. SACSI headed the Quick Response Team (QRT) of the university to the evacuation centers during the siege in Zamboanga City. The activities involved collecting and receiving relief goods from generous groups and individuals in the city and packing the goods for distribution. The office spearheaded the utilization of the university resources and facilities in order to accommodate the needed QRT operations for the victims of the conflict. The Response Team also contributed their expertise in social development among key committees such as the Hostage Processing Team during the siege. As the social involvement arm of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, it is guided by the principles of academic excellence, socio-political maturity, and spiritual growth. Its primary concern is the holistic formation of the students to be Men and Women of God, for others.
