Research Since 1949 we ve invested more than $3.7 billion in scientific research.

AHA has funded 13 Nobel Laureates Robert Lefkowitz, M.D., recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, received AHA Established Investigator and Grant-in- Aid funding from 1973-1979. Oliver Smithies, D.Phil., recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received the American Heart Association's CIBA Award for Hypertension Research in 1996 and is a longtime member of the association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research. Peter Courtland Agre, M.D., FAHA recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, received American Heart Association Established Investigator funding from 1987-92. Martin Chalfie, Ph.D. recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, received the British-American Research Fellowship from the American Heart Association in 1977. Carl Cori, M.D., and Bernardo Houssay, M.D., recipients of the 1947 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (along with Gerty Cori, M.D.), received American Heart Association funding in 1959. Mario Capecchi, Ph.D., recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received American Heart Association Established Investigator Award funding from 1969-73. Ralph Steinman, M.D., received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of dendritic cells and their role in adaptive immunology. His research on dendritic cells and transplant biology was supported via an AHA Established Investigator award from 1980-1985. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, M.D., 1937 Nobel Prize recipient in Physiology or Medicine, received the first American Heart Association-supported research grant in 1948. Edwin Krebs, M.D., 1992 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received funding from the American Heart Association in 1973. Earl Sutherland, M.D., 1971 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received a Career Investigatorship from the American Heart Association's national research program in 1967. Michael Brown, M.D., and Joseph Goldstein, M.D., co-recipients of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received American Heart Association funding in 1972 and 1974. Robert Furchgott, Ph.D., 1998 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, received American Heart Association funding from 1952-54.

Advocacy We re fighting for stronger public health policies, such as smoke-free legislation, improved school nutrition and physical education, and enhancements to stroke systems of care.

Professional Education We offer continuing medical education to healthcare professionals and have a wide range of public health education programs.

Quality of Care We ve created quality of care programs like Get With The Guidelines and Target: Stroke

We publish 12 medical journals in a wide range of specialty topics.

Emergency Cardiovascular Care Our Emergency Cardiovascular Care program provides training in CPR and other lifesaving skills to 16 million people per year.

Fellow-to-Faculty Transition Award For trainees during the crucial period of career development that spans the completion of research training through the early years of the first faculty/staff position. Offered by: AHA National Research Program Career Stage: Directed step - postdoctoral fellow

Beginning Grant-in-Aid To promote the independent status of promising beginning scientists. Offered by SouthWest and Western States Affiliates

Scientist Development Grant Funds projects that can bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator. Offered by: Founders, Great Rivers, Greater Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest Affiliates, and National Center Career Stage: 1st independent step instructor, assistant professor or other first academic appt.
