BRISBANE DEGREE S 2018 GUIDE JOB-FOCUSED TRAINING INDUSTRY ENDORSED STUDENT SATISFACTION

A NEW STYLE OF LEARNING I chose to do the Bachelor of Applied Fashion because it is a hands-on degree and the teachers and facilities are great. The best part of studying this course is being able to do our own thing and develop our own aesthetic. The teachers help me to follow my new aesthetic in fashion, and pursue this as a career. As part of our course we take part in an internship which has been great. It's been really hands on and has provided me with experience in a work environment in my industry. KRISTY POWER Graduate, Bachelor of Applied Fashion

YOUR OPTIONS. GET WHERE YOU WANT TO GO Not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace. At TAFE Brisbane there are as many options as there are individuals. Whether you want to develop practical skills before heading to university, move into the workforce and study at university part time, or boost your OP to get into your dream university course, we have a pathway option to suit your needs. STUDY A DEGREE WITH US. Along with our own suite of higher education programs, we partner with some of Australia s most established and respected universities to deliver world-class degrees in a practical, job-focused training environment. This means our students get the best of both worlds: the theoretical side of a university degree with the applied learning style that makes TAFE graduates so highly sought after by employers all delivered locally here in Brisbane. PARTNERSHIPS We have more than a decade of experience as an integrated provider of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, leveraging selected and strategic partnerships with major universities. APPLIED LEARNING Our courses focus on developing practical skills that are underpinned by theory. We make sure that everything you learn is relevant and usable. Our approach to learning and teaching is about making academic subjects applicable to the real world. SMALL CLASSES Small, workshop-style classes give you the opportunity to better know your teachers and classmates. It also means that learning is tailored to your individual needs and goals. At TAFE, your voice will always be heard; you will never just be a face in the crowd. JOB FOCUSED We specialise in learning and development, are a trusted partner to more than 500 Australian businesses, and have strong links to peak industry and community bodies. This means we offer courses that align with industry needs, and that we keep up with emerging trends, required skills, and advances in technology. Our courses always remain ahead of the curve. PRACTICAL LEARNING SPACES Our facilities are acknowledged by industry as being among the best in Australia. Our world-class equipment and collaborative working spaces mean that you will stay at the forefront of technology, and be ready to hit the ground running when you graduate. Our degrees are based on real projects, with a direct relationship to industry, and a strong emphasis on an independent and ambitious work ethic. BUILDING CONFIDENCE I can't rave enough about studying at TAFE. Studying the degree has been great for confidence building without having to start from scratch and do a four year degree somewhere else. The best part of this course has been pushing my boundaries and reaping the rewards from the lecturers. I got a lot of hands- on, practical experience. I've also been able to apply the industry experience I already have to the theoretical side of my studies here. My degree has really helped to hone in on my skills, open my eyes to the things I didn't know, and broaden the skills I need for my own projects. The personalisation you get from the TAFE environment is different to other universities. The lecturers here really get to know you. I love studying here. DIDN T FINISH YEAR 12? Didn t finish Year 12, or get the prerequisites you need for entry into that dream university course? Don t worry, you re not alone. Former Prime Minister of Australia, Paul Keating, dropped out of school at age 14 the world is still your oyster. We can help you on your journey through to university studies with our Unilearn, 'Do Year 11 and 12 Differently' program, and Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) courses. UNILEARN Need preparatory courses, such as Senior Science and Maths A, B or C, to meet university entrance requirements? Unilearn offers a range of online foundation courses to help get you into the university program of your choice. Our courses are accredited by universities across Australia. Whether you live in Australia or you re an international student, Unilearn can help you reach your goals. DO YEAR 11 & 12 DIFFERENTLY Our Do Year 11 and 12 Differently program has been designed to allow students up to 18 years of age to readily attain a selection of QCAA, QCAA-registered and/or vocational qualifications, regardless of what or when you studied previously. With these qualifications in hand, you can transition through to further study in your chosen field with increased ease and greater confidence. ADULT TERTIARY PREPARATION The ATP course is for those who wish to gain or improve their qualifications for tertiary entrance. ATP is a recognised as a Year 12 alternative that s ideal for adults who ve been away from formal study for some time. It ll allow you to apply to for a tertiary ranking on completion and help you get the entrance pre-requisites in English, maths and sciences, giving you access to university or other tertiary education. 6 tafeqld.edu.au

DIDN T GET THE OP YOU WANTED? Not getting the right Overall Position (OP score) isn t the end of university study. Completing any TAFE Brisbane Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree or Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation may improve your OP score, heightening your chances of securing a place at university. WHAT IS AN OP? An Overall Position (OP) is a number between 1 and 25 calculated by the Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) on completion of Year 12 for students who complete at least 20 semester units of QCAA subjects and sit for the Core Skills Test. Students must also carry three subjects over the two years. The OP decides tertiary entrance either to university or TAFE Diploma programs. The highest possible score is OP 1. WHAT IS A SELECTION RANK? A selection rank is a number on a scale from 1 to 99 (99 being the highest) and comes from tables or lists of conversions called schedules. A selection rank or set of ranks is allocated to each of your qualifications, including tertiary study. If you have more than one qualification, you are usually allocated more than one selection rank. Course selection rank* Maximum selection rank (using PLA) Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree 91 (approx. OP 5) 98 (approx. OP 2) Diploma 82 (approx. OP 9) 91 (approx. OP 5) Certificate IV 74 (approx. OP 12) 89 (approx. OP 6) Certificate III 68 (approx. OP 15) 82 (approx. OP 9) Course Maximum selection rank (not using STAT test) Maximum selection rank (using STAT test) Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation 91 (approx. OP 5) 98 (approx. OP 2) * Based on grade point average (GPA) equivalent of 4. QUT and Griffith currently allocate a minimum rank of 87 (approx. OP 7) and 91 (approx. OP 5) for a completed Diploma and Advanced Diploma respectively. DEGREE S 2018 7

SOUND ADVICE It s absolutely essential that we give students everything they need to succeed in the industry. We let students choose their own pathway and everything we teach is in context of real-world, practical skills. Instead of lecturing on 17th century harmonies we teach them to write a film score using these harmonies. There are still old-fashioned jobs in the music industry, but we re giving students the spirit of entrepreneurialism so they can take that knowledge and build their own start-ups. Our students are learning high-level skills to take straight in to the market place. They re not starting a degree, they re starting a career. A NEW VISION I think games are the most interesting new art form. I don t think we ve had a game that s come out that s made us realise just what we can do with games. I came because I learn practically. I was never going to be able to learn just out of books - I needed to jump straight into doing the work. And that s what lead to a Diploma of Games with TAFE, which levelled up into the Advanced Diploma and I am now working my way through the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Design. Throughout each course, I was inspired to see what could be done with the medium. Now I ve got not one, not two, but three qualifications to make this happen. Studying with TAFE has allowed me to have a role in games becoming their own distinct art form. PETER MILLS Diploma of Interactive Digital Media (Games) DEGREE S 2018 11

DEGREES AT OR HIGHER EDUCATION PROVIDERS. Through our alliances with some of the country s top universities and other higher education providers, many of our graduates are recognised for the quality of education and training they receive at TAFE Brisbane. In many instances, you can seamlessly enter a university degree course after completing one of our Diploma or Associate Degree courses without reapplying through the Tertiary Admissions Centre (). This is called a dual and means that you get guaranteed entry into university and graduate with two qualifications a Diploma and a Degree. In most cases you get at least a year s academic credit towards a related degree. DUAL AWARD You can choose from over 60 combined courses (dual s), which you apply for through a single application. You complete the Diploma at TAFE Brisbane then go to university to take up a place that has already been reserved and guaranteed for you. You don t have to reapply through. In most cases you get up to a year s academic credit towards your degree. A dual will give you the practical, real-world skills you need to move into the workforce straight away. Many of our dual graduates chose to begin their careers after completing their TAFE Brisbane qualification, and pursue their university studies part-time. This means you can earn while you learn. CREDIT TRANSFER You can choose to just study a single qualification at TAFE Brisbane. Later, if you decide to go to university, you can apply for academic credit towards a degree in a similar field. (E.g. complete a Diploma of Information and go on to a Bachelor of Information ). Once you have completed your Diploma, in most cases, universities will accept your application, however in some cases you may need to apply for university entry through. Once enrolled, you will be given your credit which has already been pre-negotiated by TAFE. Often this credit is as much as one year of the degree. Specific entry requirements may apply in some circumstances. Please refer to the relevant university. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ASSESSMENT (PLA) Many of our Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas have subjects (also called competencies) that have Performance Level Assessment (PLA) as a supplementary reporting system. PLA is a form of graded assessment and an additional way of rating certain aspects of student achievement. If you demonstrate an advanced level of performance, you will be ed a, and a Distinction is ed for exceptional level of performance. PLA has a number of advantages: converts PLA results into a Grade Point Average (GPA), which can then improve your Selection Rank (OP equivalent). You have an opportunity to enhance your OP equivalent rank to an even higher level through PLA when studying a Diploma or Advanced Diploma. You may be able to get a rank that is as good as OP 5 equivalent, opening you up to a wider range of university courses. Evidence of additional effort and performance can enhance your employment prospects. Please note that credit arrangements and course delivery is subject to change. All arrangements are correct at time of print. 12 tafeqld.edu.au
