The University of Tennessee Health Science Center The University of Tennessee Health Science Center was established in 1911 when the University of Tennessee launched its Memphis campus, dedicated solely to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy quickly flourished, and within a few short years, new programs were initiated in allied health sciences, graduate health sciences, and nursing. Each of those programs grew to become a college in its own right. In 1963, the UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville became part of the UT Health Science Center, and in 1974, the UT College of Medicine, Chattanooga, joined the UTHSC system. In 2014, Saint Thomas Health in Nashville began collaborating with UTHSC to create a Nashville campus. Today, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center s Memphis campus comprises six colleges Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy training the health care scientists and caregivers of tomorrow. Core Memphis teaching hospitals include Methodist UT Hospital, Regional One Health, Le Bonheur Children s Hospital, and the Memphis VA Medical Center. Nearly 3,000 students are enrolled at one of the four major UTHSC campuses Memphis (main campus), Knoxville, Chattanooga, or Nashville and provide care in a myriad of health care-related facilities across Tennessee. UTHSC also offers a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities. The Translational Science Research Building Research at UTHSC A strategic priority of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is: Grow the Research Portfolio focusing on targeted areas. The Health Science Center s six colleges reflect a broad spectrum of scientific investigation. Pursuing basic science and clinical research with an emphasis on translational research, UTHSC investigators are supported by both government grants and private funding. The amount of sponsored programs or non-clinical grants and contracts including research continues to grow. Funds have increased from $166.54 million in 2008-2009 to an estimated $215 million to $220 million in 2014, making UTHSC the largest creator of sponsored-program dollars in the University of Tennessee System. The $39-million, 135,000-square-foot Translational Science Research Building, which opened in August, will house up to 80 researchers and 150 staff members, the equivalent of 78 typical 500-square-foot labs, an animal facility, and meeting rooms. It also is home to the Molecular Resource Center, a vital asset for statewide research support. Nearly its mirror image, the adjacent Cancer Research Building, which opened in 2007, houses researchers investigating new treatments for all types of cancer with 32 laboratories to support research on experimental therapeutics to treat adult cancer. Public and continuing education programs are offered throughout the state. A total of 15 teaching hospitals and clinical facilities across the state have a formal affiliation with UTHSC. Independently accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, UTHSC offers four baccalaureate degrees and 30 degrees at the graduate and professional level. Three graduate certificates also are available. With more than 50 endowed professorships, including 19 Chairs of Excellence, the campus is home to three Centers of Excellence in neuroscience, molecular resources, and pharmacokinetics and therapeutics. UTHSC has educated and trained more than 57,000 health care professionals, many of whom are practicing in Tennessee. By the Numbers: 75 percent of dentists practicing in Tennessee are UTHSC graduates. 40 percent of Tennessee s pharmacists are trained at UTHSC - U.S. News & World Report has listed the College of Pharmacy in the top 20 pharmacy colleges for over two decades. 40 percent of the physicians practicing in the state trained at the UTHSC medical college - the figure increases to 70 percent when residencies and fellowships are considered. The UTHSC College of Health Professions is the largest provider of doctorally trained health professionals in the state. Founded in 1887, the College of Nursing has prepared more than 5,400 nurses to meet the health care needs of the community, the state of Tennessee, and the nation. Nearly 2,000 graduates currently are practicing in Tennessee. The leading producer of graduate nursing and nursing faculty for the region, the college has been cited several times on the U.S. News & World Report list of America s Best Graduate Schools. The college is a nationally recognized change agent in nursing education, being an early adopter of both the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the Master of Science in Nursing-Clinical Nurse Leader (MSN- CNL) degrees. Additional nursing programs include the Bachelor of Nursing and the RN-to-Bachelor of Nursing, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, designed to produce nursing research scientists and scholars. It also offers an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certificate. Research is a robust and integral component of the college s commitment to academic excellence. Research is a vehicle for developing and testing evidence to improve patient care and outcomes. In recent years, the college has nearly quadrupled its research funding. The Office of Research and Grant Support staff provides faculty and students with critical resources needed to enhance their research skills, conduct research, acquire new research and training funds, and publish their research findings. Funding agencies that support faculty research include the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Justice, and Methodist Healthcare Foundation.
