Helping universities improve through performance analysis and benchmarking

Our rankings methodology Sources Metrics Pillars Ranking As Times Higher Education s flagship performance monitoring and benchmarking platform, THE DataPoints is designed with the forward-looking and growth-focused institution in mind. How it works Built upon the 500,000+ datapoints that comprise THE s global university database, THE DataPoints is the strategic dashboard that you need to keep your finger on the pulse of your institutional performance. THE DataPoints is a single, cloud-based, interactive platform for your institution s data, accessible from anywhere and online. Key features Built on the THE global database of 500,000+ data points and more than 1,300 institutions, growing monthly and annually Framed by THE performance indicators, including rankings and other critical measures of performance, with credibility globally Showcases stand-alone and comparative performance, helping you to identify strengths and weaknesses in your institution s performance Immediate takeaways for strategic planning, further internal investment analysis, or to frame a highprofile funding or marketing case. The data behind our rankings are based on institutional data submitted via our portal, the Academic Reputation Survey and Scopus data provided by the 12.1 million papers in the Elsevier database. These data form the 13 metrics that feed into the five pillars of the rankings to give you an accurate and credible picture of your global performance. The data can be used to build a better understanding of your institution and its peers potential partners or competitors that you want to make comparisons with in a global context. Institutions featured in the THE World University Rankings THE Data+ provides an informed overview of how your university compares to similar institutions also in the rankings. Institutions yet to feature in the THE World University Rankings THE NewData provides an insight into your institution s characteristics and is based on the same analysis as our World University Ranking. Even if you are not currently ranked, you can benchmark against those that are. The THE World University Rankings have expanded to include approximately 1,000 institutions this year. We are committed to increasing our global view year on year to ensure our rankings remain the most complete in the world. 2 3

THE Data+ pillars THE Data+ pillars View in-depth analysis on the similarities and differences among your peers Assess the relative performance of your institution and your peers across the five pillars of the rankings, against the general distribution of institution in a region, country or worldwide. Use cross-pillar comparison to compare institutions across different aspects of their performance, revealing new insights and challenging current assumptions. Select the peers you would like to visualise in our box plot distribution graph 6 7

THE Data+ metrics THE Data+ metrics Access and analyse the data behind the pillars to dig deeper into the performance of your institution Metrics data can be downloaded in CSV format for analysis at a later date These allow you to identify the specific aspects of the pillars that are the strongest for your institution and those that offer the most opportunity for improvement The tables allow you to compare your institution s figures against your peers, your region, your country and worldwide across all metrics at once The colour of the plot of each metric corresponds to the pillar to which it belongs teaching (blue), research (orange), citations (purple), industry income (pink) and international outlook (green). Using cross-metric comparisons can reveal new insights and challenge assumptions about your chosen peer group, helping you to identify new potential opportunities. 8 9

THE Data+ subjects THE Data+ subjects Compare how your institution ranks against peers across all 13 metrics at a subject-area level Visualisations provide a quick analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of your institution, and that of your peers, highlighting possible areas for investment. THE Data+ peer group analysis (student view) THE Data+ executive summary Discover which other universities are most often viewed by the students who view your institution on the THE website The executive summary gives you a report of your institution s performance and provides comparisons with other institutions in order to: The student view peer group analysis builds a relationship between universities based on user sessions on the THE website. This allows us to identify universities that are most often viewed together, and others that are viewed alongside them Support strategic decision making Help you understand and plan your institution s position in a global context Facilitate mutually beneficial collaborations outside your institution. In the beta release, this is only performed at the overall level. In future releases, you will be able to choose to look at the universities viewed alongside yours based on the country of origin of users, as established by their IP address. All user data are anonymous and only used in aggregate form Recommendations are made on student similarity inside and outside your peer group CONTINENTS: STUDENTS: The analysis shows your institution s similarity to its peers as well as similar institutions outside your peer group. 30,000 8,000 *Please note, this information is only available with THE Data+ 12 13

THE Data+ year-on-year changes in performance THE Data+ year-on-year changes in performance See how your benchmark performance and that of your peers change in scores and ranking. Understand how the performance of top universities has affected your relative position across the 13 metrics. Analyse how changes at the metric level have contributed to changes in overall score. The red bars show deterioration while green indicates improvement. 14 15

Create hypothetical scenarios THE Explore simulates the portal we use to collect data from institutions for inclusion in our rankings. Here, you can create scenarios to explore how changes in your institutional statistics would have historically affected your performance. Data can be explored at all the subject levels we consider in our rankings. NEW FOR 2017/18 THE Explore (NEW) This powerful new addition to the THE DataPoints suite provides another indispensable tool for your strategic planning by allowing you to create hypothetical scenarios featuring changes to your university s core data and then shows you how these changes would have affected your performance, as measured by Times Higher Education. As with all our data tools, you are also able to compare yourself in this scenario against a variety your peers in 13 key performance indicators. THE Explore will be particularly powerful when a leadership team faces a range of similarly attractive strategic options the scenario planning tools in THE Explore may provide critical insights into the impact of the decisions characterised by each choice and provide a previously unavailable guide to decision making. Create as many scenarios are you need and save them for later analysis Disclaimer: Data in this tool are based on the previous year s World University Rankings and the output shows how that year s performance may have differed, with alternative inputs. Times Higher Education is not able to predict the outcome of future rankings; the output of THE Explore cannot indicate potential future performance. All scenarios tested within THE Explore are archived and can be compared with institutions submissions during future World University Rankings data collection periods. 16 17

See the impact of change Make sense of how your scenarios would impact your performance with the same interactive visuals and detail you get with THE Data+.
