GCSE CURRENT, LEGACY AND WALES SPECIFICATIONS DIRECTORY 1

INTRODUCTION This booklet has been produced in order to assist centres preparing candidates for the WJEC s specifications in GCSE examinations and its main purpose is to provide a summary of the assessment, the codes, the components/units offered (including their weightings, maximum raw and scores, where applicable) and a list of permissible combinations. Assessment opportunitities (s and cash-ins) are also provided. The majority of the current or legacy specifications are provided in unitised form to allow for staged assessment and re-sit opportunities; Art and Design, Business Studies, Film Studies and Geology are linear assessment i.e. all components are taken at the end of the course. Some specifications are non-tiered and others tiered. For unitised specifications with tiered units, candidates are allowed to mix and match Foundation and Higher tiers, where stipulated. In common with other awarding organisations, WJEC previously revised the unitised GCSE specifications to make the assessment linear for centres in England. In addition, WJEC created parallel unitised specifications where appropriate: All centres in England are now required to use linear GCSE specifications (where candidates sit all their exams at the end of the course). NB. From January 2015 onwards centres in England ONLY are NOT able to enter in the January series. In Wales, independent centres are able to choose to follow either of the two options available for courses i.e. either unitised assessment where separate units may be taken at stages during the course or linear assessment, where candidates sit all their exams at the end of the course. For centres in England, candidates re-sitting GCSE English in the November series must re-take all units (except for Controlled Assessment for GCSE English which may be carried forward from a previous series). The content of the two assessment routes is the same; the only difference is that in linear assessments all examinations must be taken at the end of the course. New GCSE qualifications first teaching from September 2016 Following on from the introduction of a new suite of reformed qualifications last year, working with Qualification Wales, WJEC has produced a further suite of reformed qualifications (15 subjects ) for first teaching from September 2016. These reformed qualifications will be available to all schools in Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and are tabulated within the directory. The corresponding legacy subjects will be withdrawn in September 2016 and the last full legacy qualification series availability as well as final "certification dates" following re-sit only sessions are tabulated within the directory. N.B. GCSE Latin has been developed as an "Eduqas" qualification (reformed qualifications available to centres in England) for first teaching from 2016. This has been designated by Qualification Wales following Ofqal approval and will be graded according to the new GCSE (9-1) grading in England (see GCSE Eduqas Directory). The regulators require us to offer re-sit opportunities for exam and coursework/controlled assessments for GCSE English Language, Welsh Language, Mathematics, Sciences and Additional Science (but not individual sciences). Candidates may also opt to carry forward coursework/controlled assessment s. For all other GCSE qualifications, WJEC will be offering an opportunity for candidates to re-sit their exams only. Controlled assessment s can only be carried forward (this includes GCSE MFL Speaking). Most of the GCSE re-sit only exams will be in a January series. There are a few exceptions in cases where the qualification end date is later in Wales than England. For January 2018, there will be a January submission deadline for centres to submit s on IAMIS for controlled assessments for Science A, Science B, Additional Science and Art and Design (unit 2). 2

Some of the new specifications are unitised and for which the terminal rules still apply (see below). Other specifications are linear and for which all assessments must be taken at the end of the life of the specification. Where candidates wish to re-sit the qualification, all units must be retaken. On-screen Assessment Some specifications now provide an option for either on-screen assessment or paper assessment; where this is the case, separate codes are allocated. This booklet should be read in conjunction with the following documents: GCSE Entry, Aggregation and Certification Rules from June 2014 - Rules for GCSE Specifications from June 2014: Terminal requirements, re-sits and cashing-in: Notes for Teachers and Examination Officers (JCQ booklet www.jcq.org.uk).this booklet provides a comprehensive guide to the application of the rules, terminal requirements and in particular issues arising from the provision for re-sits, and options for cashing-in. WJEC Entry Procedures & Coding Information,(September 2016-August 2017). This booklet contains detailed instructions on the submission of examination entries, as well as a complete list of entry codes. It can be found within the Exams Officer area of the WJEC website. Terminal rules for ised specifications The following briefly highlights important points to note for qualifications that are available in unitised form to allow for staged assessment (N.B. The terminal rule applies to new unitised specifications as well) Terminal requirement At least 40% of the assessment must be taken in the examination series in which the qualification is certificated. The final grade will include the assessment results which satisfy this terminal requirement. This means that students must complete their course by taking units that make up at least 40% of the weighting for the whole qualification. The results for the units that satisfy this terminal requirement will count (i.e. they will be used to calculate the grade), even if there is a better score for an earlier attempt at one or more of these units. Re-sit rules Students may re-sit each unit once before claiming certification. Options within an assessment unit and optional units are treated as separate units with regard to re-sits. Candidates can re-sit the qualification for the life of the specification. A tiered unit or tiered option may be re-sat once at either tier before certification (it is not permissible to make two attempts at each tier of a tiered unit). The better result counts towards the final grade; however, if a unit forms part of the terminal requirements then the most recent result must be used (see above). How do foundation and higher tiers work (unitised specifications)? In a foundation tier unit targeted at Grades C G, the maximum uniform available will be equivalent to a top Grade C. In tiered subjects with unit results from different tiers, WJEC will generate the best grade for the students using the optimum combination. So, students may: take different units at different tiers re-sit a unit at a different tier (once only before certification) and WJEC will calculate the best grade (subject to the terminal requirement and re-sit rules). 3

Re-taking a qualification A qualification may be taken more than once either by re-sitting all the units, or by resitting some units and re-using previous results for others, subject to the terminal requirement being satisfied. When a qualification is re-taken, a student may have up to two further attempts at each unit before certification. However, only the better of the last two results will count towards the final grade,or the last result if it is needed to satisfy the terminal requirement. Can GCSE grades be declined? Students cannot decline certification of GCSE awards after the results are published. Eligibility Students will be eligible for a qualification only when they have entered for a valid combination of units and for the cash-in. SUBJECT ISSUES GCSE History, Humanities and Religious Studies A (Legacy) Because of the large number of options available, particular care is needed regarding permissible combinations. Centres are therefore urged to pay particular attention to the tables on pages 38, 42 and 53, when entering for these subjects. GCSE Mathematics and Mathematics (Numeracy) Note: The assessment for the new Mathematics specifications will be tiered as follows: "Foundation": D - G grades available. (BUT grade C may be awarded at the foundation tier for those candidates who have performed exceptionally well and may have been inappropriately entered at this tier. Learners who have a realistic chance of obtaining a C grade should be entered for the intermediate tier or higher tier and must be made aware of this). "Intermediate": B - E grades available "Higher": A*- C available. 4

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIT WEIGHTINGS AND UNIFORM MARK SCALE (UNITISED SPECIFICATIONS) The Uniform Mark scale () is used in unitised specifications as a device for reporting, recording and aggregating candidates' unit assessment outcomes. The is used so that candidates who achieve the same standard will have the same uniform, irrespective of when the unit was taken. Individual unit results and the overall subject award will be expressed as a uniform on a scale common to all GCSE qualifications. The maximum uniform for any unit depends on that unit's weighting in the specification. The uniform s obtained for each unit are added up and the subject grade is based on this total. The document GCSE Guide" provides a detailed explanation of the uniform scale and its relationship to raw s and can be found within the Exams Officer page of the WJEC website (within "Related documents", "Results"). Current or Legacy specifications Short course awards comprise one or two units only and the majority of the Single awards comprise two units, although some comprise either three or four units. All Double awards consist of four units. Short course awards Short course subject awards for which a Single award course is also available will have 100 uniform s allocated. The table below illustrates the relationship between the uniform scale and each GCSE grade for the unit. Since units will be weighted differently, the table also shows how such units would be aggregated to achieve the final subject grade. Subject weighting Grade U.M. 40% 60% 100% 100 40 60 100 A* 90 36 54 90 A 80 32 48 80 B 70 28 42 70 C 60 24 36 60 D 50 20 30 50 E 40 16 24 40 F 30 12 18 30 G 20 8 12 20 However, Personal and Social Education Short Course and Preparation for Working Life Short Course are exceptions; they are not offered as Single awards and have 200 uniform s available for the subject.
