TMI Style Sheet 2017-2018 For consistency in internal publications as well as guidance for representatives of the news media, please use the following forms of school names and terms: School name TMI The Episcopal School of Texas is the school s name as presented since 2005. TMI is followed by a space, a dash (not a hyphen), a space and The Episcopal School of Texas. On second reference, TMI is acceptable. Founding TMI was founded in 1893 as West Texas Military Academy by the Rt. Rev. James S. Johnston, first bishop of the independent Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. The school opened Oct. 3, 2013. Corps of Cadets The Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets is correct on first reference; the TMI Corps or the Corps is acceptable on second reference. The Corps is an Army JROTC unit. Denominational identity Episcopal is the adjective for someone or something affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Episcopalian is a noun referring to someone who belongs to that denomination. Examples: She became an Episcopalian as an adult, He attends an Episcopal church, She is an Episcopal priest, They are graduates of St. Luke s Episcopal School.
TMI is the flagship school and only high school of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Clergy titles, use abbreviations and titles as follows: The Rt. Rev. David M. Reed, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas; the Rt. Rev. Jennifer Brooke- Davidson, suffragan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas; the Rev. Scott J. Brown, headmaster of TMI The Episcopal School of Texas; the Rev. Nathan Bostian, chaplain of TMI The Episcopal School of Texas; and the Rev. Jay George, rector, Grace Episcopal Church Events Founder s Day, not Founders nor Founders Day, is an annual school holiday, celebrating the achievements of the school s founder (see Individuals below). Pass in Review is a traditional military ceremony in which cadets perform parade-ground drilling maneuvers and are inspected by a reviewing official, usually an honored guest of the school with a military background. Do not use Pass-in- Review. Servant Leadership Day, formerly known as Green Day, is an annual day of student and faculty service projects on and around the TMI campus. Stars is the school s annual gala and largest fund-raising event, known by the year and theme, as in Stars 2017: Havana Nights. Do not hyphenate the Adopt a Family drive, a yearly charity event that collects and distributes holiday gifts to needy families. Facilities Use full proper names of named facilities whenever possible: All Saints Chapel has no apostrophe. Do not use Saints or Saint s. Pryor House, headmaster s residence Semmes House, chaplain s residence Stars Lawn, the grassy area in front of Frost Athletic Center. Also the lawn in front of Frost. Waller House, Upper School head s residence Historic school names West Texas Military Academy (1893-1926) and Texas Military Institute (1926-2005) should be used only in reference to the school as it was known during those years. Either former name should be followed on first reference by: (later TMI The Episcopal School of Texas) or (later TMI) when the former name follows a first reference to TMI The Episcopal School of Texas. The Rt. Rev. James Steptoe Johnston, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, founded the school in 1893. His middle name is a Scottish family surname and should not be presented within quotation marks; last name is Johnston with a T, not Johnson. The Rev. Scott J. Brown is headmaster of TMI The Episcopal School of Texas as of June 1, 2017. He is the school s 31st headmaster. Merit scholarships Albert B. and Margaret M. Alkek Scholarship is correct on first reference; Alkek Scholarship is acceptable on second reference. Two four-year, full-tuition scholarships are awarded each year to rising ninth-graders; recipients are known as Alkek Scholars. Sports All TMI athletes are known as the Panthers. Do not use Lady Panthers for female athletes or teams. Do not hyphenate honor-team designations, such as All State, All District, All Stars or All Tournament. Titles Division heads are referred to as Matthew Blake, Ed.D., Head of Upper School; and Victoria Banks, Head of Middle School, not Upper School Head and Middle School Head. The head of a TMI academic department is known as the department chair, not the department head. For correct forms of all other titles, consult the individual faculty and staff member, using the printed community directory or the OnCampus directory. Departments
Present names of academic departments as follows: Religious Studies Department, not Department of Religious Studies. Other departments are identified as follows: Advancement Office, Business Office, Office of Admissions, College Placement Department. Graphic standards When generating TMI documents in MS-Word 2010 for public use, choose from font families Garamond (serif), and Myriad Pro (sans-serif). These fonts substitute for Berling and FF Meta Book, unavailable in the version of Word currently available at TMI but recommended in the Graphic Standards Manual, A Guide to Visually Communicating the TMI Identity, approved by the TMI Board of Governors and implemented since 2005.
