Supporting detail is often limited, insubstantial, overly general, or occasionally slightly offtopic. The content is A Thesis that can be inferred with careful reading. Writer knowing enough to write in broad terms. Limited research. Writer relying heavily on personal knowledge. Sketchy evidence/support hurting credibility. The writing is clear, focused, and interesting. It holds the reader s attention. Main ideas stand out and are developed by supporting details suitable to audience and purpose. A structure that directs and supports the reader s growing understanding. Transitions that clarify significant connections, giving the piece cohesiveness. An attempt has been made to organize the writing; however, the overall structure is inconsistent or skeletal. The content is A design that is not always a smooth fit with discussion/argument. A sense of the writer may emerge at times; however, the voice is either inappropriately personal or inappropriately impersonal. The content is A voice out of balance too little of the right voice or too much of the wrong voice. The writer rarely speaking to the readers. The writer projects limited confidence in his/her knowledge of the topic. A lack of engagement that encourages readers to mentally drift.
