NQT Induction & Support Induction Packages 2017 Progression Tips Advice Support Guidance
The NQT Induction Packages 2017 Kent County Council Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Induction Team is an Appropriate Body for the Induction of NQTs. The Appropriate Body, along with the Head Teacher/ Principal is jointly responsible for the monitoring, support and assessment of the NQT during induction and has the main quality assurance role. Before an NQT can start their induction in your school, you must appoint an Appropriate Body. By appointing Kent County Council as the Appropriate Body, you are agreeing to purchase the minimum level of service we offer which is our Core Package. Other packages we have on offer include a Support Package, an Enhanced Support Package, an Accelerated Induction Package and Ad-hoc Support; see below for further information. In addition, the KCC Induction team can price bespoke packages. 2
Core Package: The Core Package for NQTs enables you to: Support an NQT through their induction Access a system for monitoring your NQT s progress Access our induction handbook with documentation and guidance to enable the NQT mentor to monitor the NQT and complete each assessment Access ongoing support and advice from the NQT Induction Team Book a free place for your NQT/s on A Guide to Successful Induction training This year the Core Package for schools in Kent also includes an initial review (provided the induction team have been made aware of any concerns by the end of the NQTs forth term after which a charge maybe levied, see Adhoc support section) to discuss targeted support for NQT s where schools have raised concerns about their progress. This may involve a member of the Induction Team visiting the school to carry out a cause for concern meeting. Visits will be arranged based on an initial assessment of the situation between the school and the Induction Team. Where demand is high, the Induction Team may have to prioritise visits based on need. If as a result of a cause for concern visit additional support is required, such as one to one support, observations or team teaching, this will be charged separately in agreement with the school. Please refer to the Ad-hoc Support section for more details. Schools outside Kent may be able to access the same service, but there will be an additional charge for this, to cover costs. All schools signing up to the Core Package will be expected to complete online assessments every term (6 times a year). The assessments are a requirement from the National College for Teaching and Leadership and must be completed on time. If a school submits assessments late on more than 2 occasions throughout the year, without prior agreement from the NQT Induction team, the school may be charged to cover additional administration costs incurred due to the assessments being late. Support Package: This includes a cause for concern review meeting between the Induction Team, school and NQT in school following a school raising concern about an NQT s progress. This is followed up with email / phone communication with the Induction Team to review the NQT s progress at the interim and final review points. If, as a result of a cause for concern visit, additional support is required, such as one to one support, observations or team teaching this will be charged separately, in agreement with the school. Please refer to the Ad-hoc Support section for more details. 3
Enhanced Support Package: This package offers individuals or groups of schools the opportunity to devise bespoke training programmes for NQTs, NQT Mentors/Induction Tutors and other school-based colleagues. The programme will be devised collaboratively between the school and NQT Induction Team. Examples of activities that could be delivered are: Lesson observations of NQT/s Training for mentors and other supporting colleagues e.g. writing assessments, effective mentoring, making accurate judgements regarding NQT progress Training for NQTs - developing a professional portfolio detailing progress against the Teachers Standards, preparing for Teacher Appraisal, effective teaching and learning Support in developing an effective induction infrastructure in school or across schools. This could be undertaken with an individual Induction Tutor or a group of Induction Tutors Follow up training for Tutors who have attended Induction Tutor training If groups of schools wish to work collaboratively, a lead school will need to be identified and the payment for the package made through this lead school. Any training for this package will be delivered at an agreed venue. Accelerated Induction: This package enables schools to apply for a reduction to their NQTs induction period. It is targeted at NQTs who are judged to be consistently good or better and have significant teaching experience prior to starting induction. We are unable to give consideration to anytime regarded as training as part of the significant teaching experience. The process includes a review of the NQT s portfolio and then at least half a day at the school to carry out two lesson observations and a meeting with the mentor and NQT. If after reviewing the portfolio the NQT is deemed ineligible for the accelerated induction process, schools will be charged 150. This accounts for the time taken to review the portfolio. This service provides: An initial consultation regarding the progress of the NQT and their prior teaching experience A review of the NQT s portfolio of evidence against the Teachers Standards Access to at least half a day assessment - 2 lessons will be observed and interviews conducted with the NQT, NQT Mentor/Induction Tutor and Head Teacher Induction Team moderation of the judgement, prior to award of accelerated induction Issue of a certificate to indicate that the accelerated induction has been successful A report sent to the National College for Teaching and Leadership detailing a change to the status of the NQT 4
Ad-Hoc Support: This ad-hoc support package can be purchased for NQTs who require focussed support in certain areas. This could include one to one support for an NQT, observation of their teaching and feedback or team teaching. Prices are based on a half day rate which can be adjusted according to the time required to undertake the activity.
