TO: FROM: All Parents, Guardians and Supporters of Catholic Education Megan Glynn, Principal SUBJECT: "Student to Student: A Catholic School Response for Hurricane Relief 2017" Our hearts and prayers are with Catholic schools and all those affected by Hurricane Harvey & Irma. Many people in our school community have been asking, "How can they help?" St. Mary School in conjunction with the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) is answering this question by launching a campaign asking every Catholic school family around the country to contribute at least $1 per student to help Catholic schools impacted by the storm to rebuild, reopen and re-enroll students. "Student to Student: A Catholic School Response for Hurricane Relief 2017" is a powerful opportunity to engage students in living the Gospel message of compassionate service to others. We invite you and your family to help us reach out to the thousands of Catholic school children who need our support by contributing at least $1.00 per student in your family. Our St. Mary Student Council will be organizing this collection campaign which will take place September 25-September 29. We are confident that the children of St. Mary School will rise to this occasion and make a real contribution to their peers whose lives have been turned upside down by this disaster. For more information on the Student to Student campaign, please visit contact us or visit http:// ncea.org/sts. Thank you for your support and prayers.

Online Learning Opportunities at St. Mary School St. Mary School s goals include developing students to become skilled independent learners. Online instruction is becoming one of the common methods of continuing education in the workplace. To help students learn the skills, web navigation, and discipline that this method requires; online learning opportunities are offered through the technology curriculum and as enrichment, elective, or credit recovery options. Online learning also allows an upper level student to tailor elective courses toward individual career goals. Online course options: Any student may participate in an enrichment online learning experience at any time at his/her own expense. School administration will determine if it is appropriate to include on the high school transcript, if that is requested. There are many sources of online education, including Suttons Bay Virtual School, Michigan Virtual High School, American School, and university programs in most states. In general, online courses will not be accepted as substitutes for classes offered by St. Mary School. Exceptions to this policy will be made for students who transfer into St. Mary from another high school, for students ready for an accelerated program, and for students who have failed a class or semester and need to repeat a course to graduate. Students may be assigned time during the school day for online courses if there is no scheduled St. Mary class that is appropriate for the student s program during that class period, as long as there is a mentor teacher available at that time. In certain situations Leland or Suttons Bay Schools will cover the cost of the course. Students must apply for this consideration, and sign a contract specifying that if a satisfactory grade is not earned the student will reimburse the school for the expense incurred on his/her behalf. If a student fails an online course, any future participation will be at the student s expense. Students may choose online courses when they are on track to fulfill required courses. Consideration for online work is given to students who have demonstrated independence in learning. Participation in online courses for St. Mary credit is by permission of administration.
