Course Description and Prerequisites Survey of major theories emphasizing human growth and development, and motivation and they relate to the teaching and learning process. Includes individual differences as they relate to needs of special learners, and cultural and linguistic differences. The preservice teacher will recognize application of developmental theories to students. 2. The preservice teacher will distinguish varied learner characteristics to better plan instruction. 3. Chapter Review Activities These activities are typically multiple choice to help you review the most important concepts from the readings. Google Plus Community Engagement and discussion in a global stage is far more valuable than a walled garden. What you say and do should make a real world impact, not only for others, but for you, as well. During the semester, you will be joining the Google Plus Community called, Teachers Teaching Today, where you will be interacting with teacher and teachers in training like you to discuss topics, share resources, solve problems, and ask questions. A Google account is required, and an educator related profile should be written. Problem Based Projects These are major projects that require collaboration and several steps to complete. No assignment can be submitted after that, and zero points will be awarded. Google Plus Community = no late submissions allowed due to the time sensitive nature of the conversation Penalty Points Access Penalty = -1 for each day you don t access the course (must be at least three different days a week: see attendance policy) Google+ Disruption = -2 per instance, for not following instructions for not following the discussion forum schedule of sparks and responses, whether they are early or late Late Penalty = varies per assignments (see Late Policy above) Burning Netiquette = -2 per instance (for not following any of the netiquette rules posted) Distraction Factor = -2 per instance (for not following instructions for assignment guidelines for format or submission) Bonus Points Early Bird = +1 (for early submission [at least 24 hours early] of module review activities) Scout Award = +2 (for helping peers with assignments through the Questions Forum, where the assistance was not a repetition of what someone else had already posted.) Fearless Explorer = +2 (for demonstrating a good attitude and willingness to experiment and explore new technologies, and assisting others with the use of Second Life, Remind, Google + in the Questions Forum) Awesome Factor = +1-3 per instance (for Solution Presentations that go above and beyond the assignment parameters) (see definition of Awesome in this TED Talk by Jill Shargaa here.) Grading Scale This course utilizes the following point scale for final awarding of grades: 900-1000 = A 800-899 = B 700-799 = C 600-699 = D -599 = F It is very important that you understand that for every assignment you do not submit, you lose those points forever. After the late submission grace period of 3 days, you lose your chance to submit an assignment. If you lose 300 or more points before the semester is over, your best option is to drop the class. class. Students considering dropping the class should be aware of the 3-peat rule and the 6-drop rule so they can recognize how dropped classes may affect their academic success. The 6-drop rule refers to Texas law that dictates that undergraduate students may not drop more than six courses during their undergraduate career. Courses dropped at other Texas public higher education institutions will count toward the six-course drop limit. The 3-peat rule refers to additional fees charged to students who take the same class for the third time. Course Policies Attendance Policy This online class does have an attendance requirement, but it is measured by access to the Blackboard course and engagement on activities. A total of four absences in any combination listed below will be grounds for getting dropped from the course. You will receive a warning at the third absence recorded, to ensure that the fourth one does not happen. Access Logging in to the course at least three times a week on three different days is mandatory. One absence will be recorded per week where login falls below three times on three different days. Penalty points will be subtracted from your grades for every day you do not login per week, for a maximum of -3 points per week. Engagement Establishing presence biweekly is another way to indicate you are attending and actively engaged with others in the course, including the instructor. Presence should be established weekly so one absence will be recorded per week that presence isn t established (see assignments in previous pages). If a personal emergency, tragedy, or unexpected life event is the cause of your being unable to access or engage in the course, you must notify the instructor within 24 hours, so that alternate arrangements may be made. This is done entirely at the discretion of the instructor, and only if the student gives timely notification. If the student waits longer than a week to notify the instructor, the student may still get an unexcused absence recorded for not being timely in the notification.
