Purposes for today: Converse with colleagues about key ideas for implementing the most effective writing workshop. Share successful resources and strategies to increase students writing skills. Analyze one s own teaching to prioritize professional learning goals.
Why Writing Workshop Creates an environment where students are engaged and can see themselves as writers and be responsible for their learning. Teaches writing as a process (TEKS) Students can learn at their own pace building on their strengths where it is okay to make mistakes.
Getting Started Spend as much time as you need to establish the routines and procedures you want your students to follow. How will you keep their writing organized? How will you organize folders? How will you monitor progress?
Writing Workshop Framework Opening- 10 to 15 Minutes Work Period 40 Minutes Closing 10 to 15 Minutes
Writing Workshop - Opening Architecture of a Mini-lesson : Connection: 1-2 minutes (Tell what you are teaching and why) Teaching: 5-6 minutes (Teach model, explain, demo) Active Engagement: 2-3 minutes (Guided practice could be turn and tell your partner. Conferring: 4 Part Model Research Observe and listen to the student What can the child do? What needs to be taught? Compliment Teach Link Begin with the positive (GLOW) Pick one teaching point and put it in the form of a strategy You can begin your teaching point by saying, Good writers. demonstrate what you want the student to do give the student an opportunity to try it. Summarize what you taught. Rename the strategy and remind the student by saying, so anytime you are writing remember (skill/strategy) (GROW) Record and send off
