Background Roads Department Training school (RDTS) now NCC Construction School was established in the early sixties as an inservice training institution for Roads department ( now Road Development Agency) personnel to undertake works through force account. In January 2004, the RDTS was handed over to National Council for Construction (NCC) through an Act of Parliament No. 13 of 2003 The School is one of the four departments created to administer part of NCC mandate. OTHER SPECIALISED COURSES Bitumen technology course graduating students Special arrangements can be made for bigger institutions, local authorities, Ministries and other persons engaged in the construction industry to have teller made courses specifically design to suit their capacity building initiatives who need to train 10 or more employees.

ENHANCED ROAD MAINTENANCE COURSE (13 weeks) The course targets labour based road construction overseers/supervisors from small and medium scale contractors. Course objectives: To introduce labour based method of road maintenance, rehabilitation and construction. To introduce trainees to enhanced road maintenance operations, gravelling, culvert and other drainage structures construction. To enhance the capacity of such contractors in technical, managerial and supervisory skills. pictures Camber formation activity The course runs for the total of 13 weeks of which 5 weeks of theory encompass road works operations, contract management and business management and 8 weeks practical phase include road works operations, spot improvement, gravelling and drainage structures maintenance and construction. Course organisation: During theory phase trainees are based at the construction school premises. To be effective, the classroom sessions are participative i.e. the trainees are involved as much as possible. Method of training delivery include lectures, audio visual, question and answer, case studies, group exercises and discussions. The performance of the trainees is assessed through written tests. As for the practical phase camps are established to accommodate trainees and Field instructors. In addition, training officers are based full time on the training site to conduct classroom lessons and direct practical training activities. The site training activities include classroom lessons and practical demonstrations. During the last phase of practical training, the trainees assume (with guidance) the responsibility of planning, executing and supervising the works. The performance is assessed on a day to day basis, especially during the period when trainees assume responsibility of running the site.

Course objectives: Enables participants to effectively carry out labour based road maintenance on paved roads. It provide both theoretical background and intensive practical exposure. It forms a basis for sound development of capacity to cope with demand of privatization and the related shift from force account to private sector execution. The course covers the following module: Pothole patching Edge repair Slurry seal Spray and chip Road furniture Further more, the course is intended to equip the participants with knowledge among many others on the following: Understanding the specifications used in bitumen works Adherence of safety measures on site Understand costing principles of bitumen works Planning, reporting and measuring of works done. Maintenance of Paved Roads Course- Trainer demonstrating spray and chip activity The course runs for 3 weeks of which the first week is theory and the other two weeks practical. The method of delivery is the same for all courses as in enhanced road maintenance. Hon. BUILDING TECHNOLOGY COURSE (4 weeks) The course targets overseers/supervisors from small and medium scale building contractors. Further selected staff from government institutions, local Authorities, consulting firms and other stakeholders. Course objectives: Enables participants to effectively carry out building construction and maintenance using latest techniques. It provides both theoretical background and intensive practical exposure. It forms a basis for sound development of capacity to cope with demand of privatization and the related shift from force account to private sector execution. The course emphasizes the technical and management aspects and oriented more towards field practical training. Very important modules of the course include: Fundamentals in building construction Work quantities and measurements Work programming and productivities Planning and reporting procedures, execution of the works Construction methodologies Building materials Interpreting drawings Conditions of contract and specifications Pricing and biding of the works Occupational health and safety Footpath project trial contract The course runs for 4 weeks. The method of delivery is the same for all courses as in enhanced road maintenance. Course fees: ZMK 2,500,000.00. The course fee covers tuition, field practicals, course EARTH MOVING PLANT OPERATORS COURSE (3 Weeks) NCC in partnership with Barloworld Equipment undertake to carry out this course. This modular course targets interested self sponsored individuals and company sponsored persons. Having a valid driving license is an added advantage. Objective: Provide participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes to effectively and efficiently operate the equipment to achieved desired results. The course emphasizes the safety of the operator, the machine and furthermore the work environment. Some of the machines include: Back Hoe excavator Bulldozer Excavators Compactor Front end loader Motor Grader Dump Truck Structure The participant train on the equipment of their choice. One machine present a module, therefore each trainee shall be trained one machine at a particular time. Both theory and intensive practical training are done. Level of Competence achieved is assessed during and at the end of module before certification. Course fees: One of the female operator trainers demonstrating during the graduation ceremony. CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL TESTING COURSE (3Weeks) The course targets Engineers, Technicians and building/road inspectors from Government Institutions, local authorities, consulting firms and other stakeholders. Objectives To provide participants with a wide range of proven or best practices for materials currently used in the region. Factors such as pavement materials, their behavior and performance will allow participants to get familiar with such materials at any level of project management from feasibility, design and supervision. This course is intended as guide for practicing target group and leave room for engineering judgement to be used. It is more in nature of manual for participants, prescribing standardized testing methods for various materials used in the construction industry and further establishing the quality of the project/product. The course runs for 3 weeks. It provides both theoretical background and intensive practical exposure. Module s include but not limited to the following: General construction materials and their uses Standard testing method for the quality and suitability of materials in above Standard testing methods for the quality/strength of the finished product in above CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (4 weeks) The target group is the emerging building and road contractors, Government Institutions, local authorities, consulting firms and other stakeholders spread throughout the continent. Objectives of the course: Among many others, the main objectives of this course is to enable participants : Have a better understanding of the costing principles of the works, conditions, specifications, etc of contracts. Prepare competitive realistic bids Efficiently and effectively manage the construction project Planning and reporting procedures, execution of the works Work quantities and measurements To concretize knowledge acquired, the course delivery approach is biased towards case studies that engage participants in actual tendering/pricing situation and introduction of TEVETA Improve Your Small Business (IYSB) to trainees as a sustainable tool for their constant reference.
