Page 12 Nevada Chamber Newsletter Local Mentoring Program Needs Volunteers! By Margaret Horwitz November 15, 2013 The Youth & Shelter Services GRIP (Great Relationships In Pairs) Mentoring Program is actively recruiting volunteers from the Nevada community to serve as mentors for youth at both Central Elementary and Nevada Middle School. GRIP promotes student achievement and well being through one-to-one mentoring relationships. Our outcome studies demonstrate improvement in mentee academic performance and classroom behavior, as well as significant improvement in mentee feelings of inclusion at school and with friends. Elementary and middle school students are referred to GRIP by a teacher or counselor, a family member or themselves for a variety of reasons which may include academic difficulty, social challenges or issues affecting life at home. The mentoring relationship is a mutual commitment to a long-term friendship that develops through weekly 30-50 minute meetings that often take place during the mentee s lunch period. The program sponsors additional learning opportunities for mentors and group activities for mentors and mentees, such as game night, free tickets to athletic events and annual mentoring recognition banquets. More information about GRIP Mentoring can be found on the YSS website. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Margaret Horwitz, the GRIP Mentoring Facilitator for Nevada schools at 515.291.1692 or at escmentoring@yss.ames.ia.us.
