ELS CLASSES AND LEVELS: HERE S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. The ELS Intensive and Semi-Intensive programs provide placement testing for assignment to one of our 12 proficiency levels (Levels 101 112). Depending on the program, each level consists of 16.7 to 25 class hours per week of teacher-led instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. All sessions are four weeks in duration. At the end of each session, students successfully meeting the requirements for that level will progress to the next ELS level and immediately begin the new session. You can begin your ELS program on any one of our starting dates and choose to study for any number of four-week sessions. Please contact us for other possible start dates. Students at all levels receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of their course, documenting their achievement. CORE CLASSES The ELS curriculum s core classes include all of the vital building blocks of English language learning. Levels may be grouped into Beginner, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced to allow students of similar abilities and interests to study together, but each student is tracked and evaluated according to his or her specific level. Structure and Speaking Practice: includes instruction in speaking, listening, grammar and more. Language Technology Centre: technology-supported learning allows you to concentrate on your individual learning needs and objectives. Vocabulary Enrichment: this systematic approach to vocabulary study helps you learn, use and remember new vocabulary. EAP Stream Reading and Writing: concentrates on the development of reading comprehension as well as writing fluency and accuracy. SKILLS ENHANCEMENT CLASSES Skills Enhancement Classes are available to all full-time General English Stream students. THE ELS LEVELS PROGRESSION PYRAMID The ELS Intensive English Program (General English and EAP Streams) offers 12 levels of instruction, designed to address the needs of students across the spectrum of English proficiency from those coming to ELS with the most basic of skills, to students with greater fluency who are just steps away from entering a college or university program. The 12 levels build upon one another, like a pyramid, relying on the foundation of skills learned at lower levels and moving upward in complexity as the levels increase. This course is designed for students who are seeking a directentry pathway into an Australian university, TAFE (Technical and Further Education) or vocational college, without the need to sit an IELTS or TOEFL test. What is the program? Intensive development of the listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar skills that you need to communicate accurately and effectively in the academic world and beyond. At ELS/Sydney, the pathway course commences in the ELS Intensive English Program English for Academic Purposes Stream, which is offered from Levels 101 to 108. Academic English Programs in Sydney Academic English 3 and 4 Academic English Sydney Successful completion of ELS/Sydney s Academic English 3 and/or 4 courses will provide direct-entry pathways to over 40 further study institutions in Australia. What levels are offered? Academic English 3 (AE3) prepares you for further study at TAFE or a vocational college Academic English 4 (AE4) prepares you for further study at university in courses that require IELTS 6.0 or higher to enter What is the curriculum? The curriculum is fast-paced and challenging, covering techniques in essay and report writing, academic listening and reading, note-taking, presentation development and delivery, academic research, critical analysis, discussion and referencing you will develop all the skills you need to achieve success in an Australian university or college environment. Weekly one-to-one consultations with your teachers provide you with feedback on progress and pinpoint areas for your improvement. What if I want to apply for conditional admission? In most cases, successful completion of an Academic English program at ELS/Sydney means that you will not be required to sit an IELTS TM, TOEFL or other formal English language test before undertaking further studies at one of our pathway partner institutions. You can package your enrolment at ELS/Sydney with most of our direct-entry pathway partners under normal visa processing arrangements. JUNIOR AND HOLIDAY PROGRAMS High School Preparation Sydney Lower Elementary Upper Intermediate Our High School Preparation (HSP) course provides students 13 to 17 years of age with the English and academic skills they will need to enter and succeed in a government or private Australian high school. HSP combines intensive English language study to improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. At higher levels we include English for specific Australian high school subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Human Society, Personal Development and Health, and Computer Studies. To build your confidence and help you adapt to life in your new high school, we also cover Australian study methods and culture as well as an introduction to the Australian high school system. Regular student progress reports are provided to parents and caregivers. Outside the classroom, the course features educational and cultural excursions as well as a structured sports program.
