PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS: IEEE, Acoustical Society of America Honor society affiliation: Tau Beta Pi RESEARCH INTERESTS: My primary area of expertise is signal processing and optimization and since arriving at WHOI, I have applied my skills to various areas in oceanography with special focus on shallow water acoustic communications. Specifically, I have developed a novel adaptive technique for robust shallow water channel estimation and tracking in the presence of Doppler spread, and am currently testing my algorithms on SPACE08 data. Broadly speaking, I seek to apply geometric intuition to solve challenging problems in signal processing and optimization, particularly those commonly encountered in time-varying and non-linear systems, such as underwater acoustic or optical communications. Most of my research has been in channel estimation and interference mitigation, with an interest in sparse sensing, for example, for tracking the time-varying and sparsely distributed delay-doppler coefficients in the shallow water acoustic channel. In my doctoral work, I addressed the issue of separating non-additive interference as is commonly encountered in a non-linear satellite downlink. I am also exploring related application areas for my signal processing techniques such as underwater imaging and hope to build array processing and compressive sampling methods to solve related oceanographic problems. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: WHOI (Non Education Related): Collaborating with Cabell Davis, Al Bradley, Norm Farr and Cliff Pontbriand on an underwater imaging proposal that we plan to submit to the NSF Aug 15 panel. We have already submitted an independent study award with myself as the A1 PI asking for some seedling money on a prototype-building project. Outside WHOI (Other than Attendance at Society/National Meetings): I co-organized and chaired the special session on "Sparse Approximations" at the 159th Meeting Of The Acoustical

Page 3 Society Of America, Baltimore, MD, April 19-23, 2010. I also got invited to organize the special session in Effects of environment and challenges to Acoustic Tracking at the ASA Spring 2012 meeting in San Diego. I have also reviewed several journal articles for IEEE Signal Processing, IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, and among recent conferences have reviewed articles for the SYMPOL Ocean Electronics symposium in Cochi, India for which the Oceanic Engineering Society is technical co-sponsor. PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATION PROGRAM: Invited lecture and demonstration at the Acoustical Society of America special session for girl scouts in the Baltimore meeting, April 21, 2010. Delivered three guest lectures in Fall 2008 for my advisor s graduate-level course in time series analysis at MIT. Prior (outside WHOI) teaching experience: Summer 2008: Lecturer in senior/graduate level DSP course (ECE410) in Summer II term. Fall 2000-Fall 2005: Graduate Teaching assistant for several semesters for the graduate courses in Digital Signal Processing (ECE551) and Control Systems (ECE515) and the senior-level course in DSP (ECE410) SUPERVISION AT WHOI: I have interacted closely with one of my advisor s JP students and am actively advising on my collegaues students in George Mason University. The lecture and demonstration in the actual session involved a separate project using different length tubes to demonstrate the acoustic effects of various air column lengths and how closing/opening one end activates a different mode. We also experimented with a corrugated bendable tube where the air flow could be controlled by rotating the tube at different velocities thus leading to different modes being activated. We had to change the assigned projects to this invted session as noise levels in the room made it impossible to hear a tuning fork for demonstration purposes.
