Interaction and Demonstration of the Economic Activities of Day to day Life organized by our MA and III M.Sc. Students and Faculty for the School children of Thiruvarur District who visited the Department of Economics, CUTN on 22.02.2017. Special Lectures / Discussions organized in the Department Panel Discussion Panel Discussion on the topic Agricultural Economics: Challenges and Prospects, was conducted on 17.10.2016. Prof. Sami Ayyan, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Thanjavur, Chaired the session. The Panellist include Prof. Ayyampillai, Agricultural Economist from Bharathidasan University, Trichy, Prof.Narayana Moorthy, Agriculture Economist from Alagappa University, Karaikudi and Prof..R.Rjendran, Agriculture Economist from Gandhigram Rural University Dindigul. Panel Discussion on Economics of Environmental Management: Global to Local Concerns conducted on 24.10.2016. Prof. P. Geetha Rani, Head of the Dept. of Economics, CUTN was the moderator. The Panellists are Prof. M. Ravichandran, Environmental Economist, Bharathidasan University, Trichy Prof. Samuel Asir Raj, Environmentalist, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli and Mr. Thirumurugan, Environmental Activist, Chennai. Panel Discussion on Understanding Marxian Economics was conducted on 26.10.2016 in the on 26.10.2016. Prof. P. Geetha Rani, Head of the Dept. of Economics, CUTN was the moderator and the panellists were Dr. R. Gopinathan, Asst.Professor Dept. Economics, CUTN and Dr. A.P. Sreeraj, Malayalam University, Malappuram, Kerala. 5

Research Methodology Workshop Department of Economics has successfully conducted Research Methodology Workshop on Applied Econometrics on 27 th March to 31 st March, 2017 in association The Indian Econometric Society (TIES). The total number of participants of the workshop is limited to 22. The Participants mainly represent the institutes such as IFMR Tada, Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Gujarat, University of Mysore, University of Kerala, Karnataka University, Pondicherry University and Bharathidasan University. The five day workshop enable the participants to appreciate and apply econometric techniques to analyses economic issues. It gives practical experience about the database and to facilitate the application of econometric techniques to the issues of economics of education. The theme of the workshop covers the topics such as introduction to large survey data, multiple linear regression analysis and the violation of the assumption of CLRM, limited dependent variable models, Impact evaluation methods, difference in difference techniques, matching and propensity score, regression discontinuity and panel data models. UGC JRF? NET Coaching Class Department of Economics has conducted UGC-JRF-NET Coaching Class for PG and Ph.D. Students of the Department as well as nearby colleges PG students from 12/01/2017 to 24/03/2017. The total number of students participated is 40. The co-ordinator of the programme is Prof. P. Geetha Rani, Head of the Department, Economics and the Co Coordinators are Mr. R. Raveendraprathap and Dr. R. Gopinathan, Assistant Professors (on Contract) of the Department. The Following Resources Persons delivered special lectures. Gopinathan, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, CUTN Alumni Meet March 2017 Department of Economics has organized an alumni meeting of the Integrated M.Sc. Economics students of the batch 2011-16 and 2012-17 on 3 rd March 2017 at CUTN for the purpose of creating alumni data base, tracking students' progress, getting students suggestions and inputs for students internship and placements. 13 alumni, 75 students, and faculty members in the department participated in the meeting. In the inaugural function Prof. P. Geetha Rani, Professor and Head, Department of Economics welcomed gatherings and provided a number cases where role of alumni is vital 7

for the development of the institution. Dr. S. Bhuvaneswari, Registrar, CUTN in her presidential address advised students to take pride of institution from where they graduated, enjoy the profession, contribute to Alma Mater in their own ways and take active participation in process of Nation building. Others sessions include faculty members address, alumni inputs and interaction of students and faculty with alumni. The whole day long programme ends with fun games, short video of student activities followed by cultural activities arranged by students in the department. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Prasant Kumar Panda, Associate Professor of Economics. First BOS Meeting, Economics The first meeting of the Board of Studies, Economics was convened on 11 th April 2016 at Central University of Tamil Nadu. The Board approved the revision of syllabus for Integrated M.A Economics, MA. General Economics, MA Financial Economics, MA Applied Quantitative Finance, MA Acturial Economics and MA.Environmental Economics. More choice based optional papers were introduced. The Board approved the Course structure and detailed syllabi for the new programme MA Economics and Ph.d course work. The Board of Studies Meeting, Department of Economics was convened on 22.10.2016. The revised syllabus and the course structure of M.A. Economics to be followed at the Department of Economics, Central University of Tamil Nadu with effect from 2017-18 was approved. The syllabus of open electives the Department proposes to offer was also approved. Review of MOU of Collaboration with MSE A memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is signed between Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) and Madras School of Economics (MSE), Chennai on 5 th July 2016 to renew the collaboration for another five years. Under this collaboration, various 8
