A Message From Your Seminar Leader, Anne Beninghof Dear Colleague: Bureau of Education & Research 915 118th Avenue SE PO Box 96068 Bellevue, WA 98009-9668 Phone (800) 735-3503 Fax (425) 453-1134 www.ber.org As a special educator for more than thirty years, I have seen many changes in the field. The most exciting change has been the introduction of the ipad and the limitless variety of apps available to enhance instruction. With today s students, technology, including the ipad, is a critical component when developing lessons and activities that will capture and hold the attention of students. The ipad is especially helpful when working with students with special needs as it has the potential to increase motivation and significantly improve students involvement in learning and success in school. With this in mind, I began to explore the best ways to use ipads with students with special needs. Hours spent in the app store and testing apps with students led me to realize that free does not always mean effective. I began to develop a list of quality indicators by which I could judge the value of an app saving the ones that worked easily and effectively and deleting the ones that did not. My colleagues and I explored various ways to use ipads in differentiating instruction, including whole group, small group and 1 to 1 interventions with students with special needs. We developed ideas for what to do if you only have one ipad, as well as effective ways to use multiple devices. I ve spent time asking educators from around the country about their favorite apps and following technology bloggers. At this seminar I would love to share with you my findings! I enthusiastically invite you to join me for an idea packed day as I demonstrate the current, best apps for special education. Whether you are technology timid or a technology titan, this seminar will spur you forward with exciting ideas you can use right away! Sincerely, I enthusiastically invite you to join me for an idea packed day as I demonstrate the current, best apps for special education. Anne P.S. While I will share a conceptual framework for planning, selecting and implementing ipad apps, the majority of the day will be spent exploring the best, most practical apps and strategies that your students with special needs will love and benefit from! 4
