The transition from Reception to Key Stage 1 marks an important step in a young child s school life. It is vitally important to ensure that it works smoothly nurturing children s natural desire for learning. Age-phase specialism is therefore a key feature of our programme. The Early Years route is designed for graduates who are interested in teaching children aged three to seven focusing studies on the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 concentrating on themes related to primary education that address key government priorities such as curriculum management, working with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and working with children who use English as an Additional Language (EAL). You will learn about the impact of effective teaching on a child s educational process and you ll develop teaching skills informed by theory and subject knowledge. You ll have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in a classroom setting working, developing and strengthening your knowledge of both the Foundation Stage curriculum and the National curriculum. You will develop the professional skills of planning, teaching and assessing learning, as well as how to build effective relationships with children. Year 1 As soon as you begin the programme you start your journey of professional development towards becoming a qualified teacher. In your first year you will become familiar with the Teachers Standards and the key roles and responsibilities of a class teacher. You will begin to develop an understanding of the key learning theories and aspects of child development that underpin all classroom activities. Your specialist subject tutors will introduce you to key aspects of the Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum supporting you in developing your own subject knowledge in preparation for teaching. You will visit school weekly in the first semester to reflect on the key principles that you are learning, and to prepare for your first assessed block of school-based training. Year 2 In your second year you will reflect on your own progress towards becoming a qualified teacher and set targets to develop your independence in the classroom. In your professional studies modules you will continue to develop your understanding of how you are accountable for pupil progress and how best to support children with a wide range of needs. Your weekly school visits in semester 1 will help you to reflect on best practice in this area. Your specialist subject tutors will support you in becoming independent in planning, teaching and assessing learning across the whole curriculum for Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. As well as a second assessed block of school-based training, you will have the opportunity to complete a placement in an alternative educational setting which might include special provision, schools abroad, museums, educational attractions and library services. Year 3 In your final year you will make the transition from trainee to Newly Qualified Teacher. Your development tutor will support you in preparing for your final assessed block of school-based training, where you will take on the full role of the class teacher. You will learn about the key ethical and legal responsibilities of the teacher and how to establish good working relationships with colleagues in school, from a range of support services and parents. You will have the opportunity to carry out a small-scale enquiry project into an aspect of your own professional practice. Throughout your final year, tutors will support you in preparing for your first employment and beyond. Entry requirements Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is BBC. We treat every application on its own merit and value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement. Professional work placements Year 1 In semester 1 and 2 you will visit schools in small groups to reflect on the key principles of teaching and learning in English/Literacy and Mathematics. In semester 2 you will attend a two week induction placement at your placement school, followed by a seven-week assessed block of school-based training. This may be a paired placement. Year 2 In semester 1 you will visit schools in small groups to reflect on best practice in supporting pupils with a wide range of needs. You will also have the opportunity to spend two weeks in an alternative educational setting, such as a specialist inclusion unit, museum, sports service, early years provision, or a school outside of the UK. In semester 2 you will complete an eight-week assessed block of school-based training. This will be an individual placement. Year 3 In semester 1 you will attend a three week pre-placement to prepare for your final school-based training. In semester 2 you will complete an eight-week assessed block of school-based training. This will be an individual placement where you are expected to take on the full role of the class teacher. At the end of semester 2 you will complete an enhanced school placement to support transition to your first year of teaching. Graduate destinations The majority of our graduates secure employment as a class teacher following successful completion of the course. Some graduates choose to work in other educational settings, such as specialist inclusion units, children s services, family centres, museum services, sports services or in educational settings outside of the UK. 8 Outstanding student experience At Leeds Trinity University our students experience inspirational teaching in the classrooms and excellent facilities across the campus. Library and Study Facilities Our Library can be found in the Andrew Kean Learning Centre. It has a great range of study facilities, extensive print and digital collections and an excellent reputation for helping and supporting our students. You ll have access to over 100,000 print volumes and a wide range of electronic books to help with your studies. We have also invested extensively to give you access to other academic resources and databases, and our online library provides an easy one-stop shop to thousands of journal articles. The recently extended and refurbished Learning Centre is equipped with over 400 computers, and offers a range of different learning environments from group study rooms equipped with smartboards, PCs and media playback facilities, to a dedicated silent study zone and individual study carrels. With such a variety of spaces and zones, you re sure to find one that fits your needs! In the extension, you will also find the very latest facilities and technology, a bigger and better 24-hour lab, meaning you can study whenever suits you best, and a brand new café to recharge at, when you feel like you need a break! 10 Teaching and assessment Learning and teaching methods At Leeds Trinity, we aim to provide an excellent student experience and a personal approach to helping students achieve their academic and professional potential. We have a strong tradition of supporting student employability, with relevant skills embedded in the curriculum and professional work placements included in all our undergraduate programmes. Strategic learning themes The key themes of our strategy are student confidence, professionalism and social responsibility. To help students achieve their potential we emphasise learning as a collaborative process, with a range of student-led and directed activities. This approach ensures that students fully engage in shaping their own learning, developing their critical thinking and reflective skills so that they can identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and use the extensive learning support system we offer to shape their own development. Student-centred learning The learning and teaching on our courses is delivered through a range of student-centred approaches which involve problembased learning, plenty of group work and case study applications. The international work environment demands strong team working ability and collaboration and the everyday learning experience steadily builds up students confidence and skills. We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials both on and off campus. Assessment The modules on these programmes will be delivered by means of formal lectures, group workshops, seminars and blended self-study learning. Access to electronic resources including core e-texts will be made available for most of the modules. A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed. International study We encourage our students to make the most of their degree by studying abroad where you ll expand your horizons while earning valuable credits towards your degree. There are opportunities to study abroad for a semester in your second year with our partner universities in places such as Australia, Canada, the USA, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. Erasmus funding is available to eligible students to help cover the costs of studying in Europe, where some courses may be taught in English. If going abroad for a full semester isn t for you, there are also shortterm study abroad options which are open to all students. These range from a Taiwan Winter Camp, which takes place for two weeks in January, to summer schools during July and August in Australia, Japan, Malaysia and China. Research project In the final year, students conduct a research project or professional learning through work project in which they explore in greater depth a topic of personal academic interest. Furthermore, across all modules in the final year greater student choice is built into the programme allowing you to develop your own area or region of expertise.

12 Living and studying in a great university city We guarantee a room in our halls on campus to all new students, with the majority of our first year students choosing to live on campus. This means that you ll have a friendly, supportive and secure environment to live in, managed by people who have your best interests at heart. We have over 800 bedrooms on campus, ranging from self-catered en-suite rooms in a shared flat to part-catered accommodation with shared bathrooms. Our accommodation contracts are for an academic year and the price includes heating, electricity and regular cleaning, as well as personal possessions insurance, and free Wi-Fi access. Our offer 15 We are committed to nurturing and supporting you throughout your Leeds Trinity journey - from the moment you apply for your place, until long after you graduate. We understand that no two students are the same, so we welcome students with a range of qualifications and will personalise our offer to you. Leeds Trinity s entry requirements are listed with each course as a UCAS tariff score, although some of our courses may make grade-based offers. We will give special consideration to applicants where academic achievement has been gained in difficult personal or educational circumstances, including: applicants who are first generation entrants to higher education, applicants who have been in care in the last three years, applicants who have care responsibilities, applicants who are members of the traveller community and applicants with refugee status. We recognise that you may have previous experience or qualifications which make you suitable for entry onto a course, or exemption from modules or part of a course. This means that you could gain credit for prior learning, enabling you to gain entry onto a course, or enter at a different level. 16 Developing highly employable graduates All of our degree programmes offer a blend of employability skills, professional placements, extracurricular activities and one-to-one support. We call this our employability formula - a special blend of support and guidance that gives our graduates a head start in getting a job. Guaranteed work placements You will undertake two 20-credit Professional Development and Placement modules, which include five/six-week professional work placements in the summer terms of Year 1 and Year 2. You will have the opportunity to gain work experience in a sector relevant to your degree programme. Before your work placements start you are fully prepared and briefed. Afterwards, you are encouraged to reflect on the experience. Our professional work placements are a pivotal part of your degree programme and, along with networking and equivalence arrangements, will invariably help you to find your first job after graduation. Professional learning through work A further option is the Professional Learning through Work module, which will involve the negotiation of a special project with an employing organisation and approved by academic staff at Leeds Trinity. These module options are designed to enhance and develop a network of industry contacts, which will help you access your chosen career networks. You will be offered opportunities to develop professional skills and links with employers throughout your degree through participation in our on-campus Local Business Network, as well as access to extensive Business Networks made available through corporate membership of the IOD (Institute of Directors) and Leeds Chamber of Commerce. You are also encouraged to build on the contacts made during your work placements.
