KS2 SATS Meeting Bladon Primary School 16 th November 2017

Pre 2016 - Children were tested in the following areas over the course of a week: English Reading English SPAG Mathematics Mental arithmetic Mathematics - Paper 1 and 2 (calculator) In addition children were measured in the following subjects also Writing (Teacher assessment) Science (Teacher Assessment + small sample of schools selected) SATS Testing for Key Stage 2 Previously All schools with Year 6 pupils were tested using SATS Pupils were measured using levels from 3-5 with the national expectation being L4 This later developed to include L6

From 2016 - Children were tested in the following areas over the course of a week: English Reading English SPAG questions English SPAG spelling Mathematics Arithmetic 1 Mathematics - Reasoning 2 and Reasoning 3 (no calculator) In addition children were measured in the following subjects Teacher assessment writing Science Teacher Assessment + small sample of schools selected Pupils no longer measured in levels No higher level paper as the greater depth of knowledge was tested, instead pupils were awarded a scaled score out of 100. This means a child can pass or fail. It is recognised however if a child scores highly, this mark is set once all the results are calculated.

Calculating raw scores The raw scores for each test are calculated by adding the scores from each paper for a subject. These are then turned into a scaled score Test Number of marks available in the paper English reading 50 marks 50 marks English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: questions English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: spelling Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic Mathematics Paper 2: reasoning Mathematics Paper 3: reasoning 50 marks 20 marks 40 marks 35 marks 35 marks Total number of marks available for the test highest raw score 70 marks 110 marks

Scaled Scores Reading 2017

Scaled Scores Maths 2017

Scaled Scores SAPG 2017

Range of scaled scores The range of scaled scores available for each KS2 test is the same and will stay the same in future years: 80 is the lowest scaled score that can be awarded 120 is the highest scaled score A pupil awarded a scaled score of 100 or more has met the expected standard in each test. A pupil awarded a scaled score of 99 or less has not met the expected standard in the test. As tests and teacher assessment (TA) are different forms of assessment, they do not report using the same scale. As a result, there are no scaled score equivalents to the TA concepts of working towards the expected standard or working at greater depth within the expected standard. If a pupil has not scored enough marks on the test to demonstrate that they have sufficient understanding of the KS2 curriculum for the subject they will not receive a scaled score. The outcome of the test for the pupil will be NS, expected standard not achieved

SATS benefits of new system! New curriculum allows for consolidation and depth of knowledge Learning fewer things but in a greater level of detail but The level of expectation has been raised significantly Changes have come fast and furious compared to levels and old system (daily) It is still under construction! SATS Why the changes? Levels were believed to be confusing for parents Children were continually pushed through the levels Rigour and accuracy questioned.

SATS When and how long? The tests will take place nationally during the week beginning 14th May 2018. Any absentees cannot take tests at a later date. Tests will happen each day and the papers are locked away before and after each test. This includes no access by teaching staff! Scripts are sent off site for marking. Results will be reported at a later date before the end of the academic year.
