The History (Background) Tracking #1-Anesthesia Technology The Anesthesia Technology Program is presented as an AAS degree. Discussion of this program offering first began through the Surgical Technology Program Advisory Board meeting. Major area hospitals have identified an increased need for Anesthesia Technologists. Formally educated and trained technologists are now required by the relevant certifying agencies, and this offering will make TCCD the first in the state to meet this demand. This program will reinforce TCCD's ongoing mission of training comprehensively qualified and well-educated professionals to meet the ever-growing needs of Tarrant County and surrounding communities. Working under the direction of anesthesia providers, Anesthesia Technologists are vital members of the anesthesia care team. They are proficient in the acquisition, preparation, and application of various types of equipment required for the delivery of anesthesia care. Technologists are trained to anticipate the needs of the patient and the provider, according to the surgical requirements, procedures, or circumstances. The Need (Why) There is a large cohort of Anesthesia Technologists in the DFW metro area who will need to complete an Associate's degree in Anesthesia Technology to be eligible for certification with the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians {ASATI). The traditional system of informal cross-training is no longer permitted in this industry effective July 15, 2015 {ASATI). Through the surgical technology advisory board meetings, industry leaders from major area hospitals and clinics have expressed a high interest in meeting the needs of their OR departments and are calling on TCCD to assist in meeting the new mandate. So much so that all are putting themselves forward to serve as clinical sites for this and other programs. Through the efforts of the Program Director, over twenty sites are anticipated to agree to housing TCCD students once the program is launched. Employers will encourage personnel working in the industry to participate in this and other associate degree programs to gain additional skills, allowing transition to higherlevel positions. The newly mandated needs of community partners across the DFW area has led to the development a very unique and creative pathway to career advancement for many unskilled and skilled professionals. Through innovative course delivery, the YYYY/MO/DY of Board Meeting Page 1
program will be offered as an AAS degree, making it unique as well as the first to be offered in the state. Beyond serving people currently working in the field, this program will support student pathways into a growth occupation. By the year 2030, Americans 65 years of age and older will account for more than 20% of the total population. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics {Table 1.1), the projected occupation growth is 25% through 2018. That is an increase of over 900 jobs in Texas alone. Students will complete the program with a unique combination of technical and patient care skills and the ability to enter the workforce as competent imaging professionals who contribute directly to the socioeconomic structure of Tarrant County. The Program Director, YYYY/MO/DY ofboard Meeting Page 2
currently teaching as fulltime faculty member for dual-credit students, will reach out to leaders in business and industry, to community leaders, and to area hospitals by asking them to work with TCC in an advisory capacity to improve the curriculum. The initial meeting will be held the semester after hire in 2017. The committee members will provide information to guide program curriculum: the changing role of technologists the healthcare needs of local communities issues, trends, and developments in healthcare practice and policy The program director will also work closely with the leaders of surgical technology and sterile processing to ensure student and institutional interest. With the appointment of the program director, TCCD brings scientific expertise, health care leadership, innovation in technology, collaborative team learning, and a tradition of public service to its Anesthesia Technology students. This will make a positive, long-term systemic impact on the local workforce in Tarrant County and surrounding areas. The Method (How) Procurement will follow TCCD procurement policies and procedures. The Cost (Funding) The anticipated CSP program general ledger budget for 2017-2018 is $7,500 for the general operation and has $3,000.00 for travel, which should be reevaluated. The Table 2.0 indicates the approved operating expenses. ** As needed Table 2.1: Costs Probable Opinion of Cost Initial program equipment is yet to be determined and, without the input of a program director, difficult to estimate. A startup cost of equipment should be considered for this program Donated equipment Room prep $15,000 (suggested) Currently, four pieces of equipment have been donated for the anticipated launch: Surgicare of Mansfield (1), Harris Methodist (1), and JPS (2) To be offered in preexisting class space and shared lab with surgical technology Total $15,000 Table 2.3: Anticicated Enrollment Fall 2017 Fall 2018 Fall 2019 Two (2) semester offering Annual Cohort 20 20 20 Annual Graduates 17 or higher 17 or higher 17 or higher The Schedule for Completion (If Approved) The scheduled launch date for this program is set for Fall 2017. The Program Director will be responsible for the securing of clinical sites, development of curriculum, and accreditation of program. The program was originally approved through the C&I Process of TCCD. The program prospectus was submitted to the office of Institutional Effectiveness and Compliance Fall of 2016. The Ramifications (If Not Approved) Anticipated vacancies across the region, state, and country caused by retiring employees from the very large baby-boomer cohort, coupled with the increased longevity of an aging population, is creating higher than average demands for technologists. The healthcare needs of an aging population and the hiring needs our local employers will not be met, should this program not be offered. Major community partners such as The Texas Harris Health System, The John Peter Smith System, The Baylor, Scott & White System, Cook Children's, and The HCA System as well as other major supporters of TCC will be YYYY/MO/DY ofboard Meeting Page 4
forced to form partnerships with institutions outside of Tarrant County to fill the needs of their facilities. Delay of this program offering will allow other institutions and for-profit institutions to lay claim to a major market. Clusters/Pathways: The Anesthesia Technology program leads to both post-primary certifications and additional AAS degrees found within the cluster of programs below. This cluster of programs is related through the operating room, and employees commonly pursue additional advancement opportunities by pursuing additional pathways. Current and future Surgical Technologists and Sterile Processing Technologists may contribute to increases in enrollment for this program.
