From Anita Ordóñez Page 2 Calling All Colors meetings are my favorite time of the week! We get to connect with each other, hear our successes, support each other to overcome struggles and we learn to speak out. This year s highlights include: You achieved honors, awards and scholarship this year! Faride Cuevas won the Lewis Award for outstanding graduating sophomore; Berenice Puente exhibited her art work in the SVC gallery; Yadira Rosales won the Mount Vernon Soroptimist Fellowship Award and Celerino Hernández was elected to ASSVC. Scholarships valued at close to $80,000 from Calling All Colors, SVC Foundation, MV Soroptimist and Manieri Foundation were won by Cornelio Avila, René Cruz, Faride Cuevas, Mayra Delgado, Geraldine Garcia, Silvia Guzman, Celerino Hernández, Griselda Ibarra, Jiyeon Jeong, Renee Kester, María Macedo, Esmeralda Martínez, Glenda Mendoza, Berenice Puente, Yadira Rosales, Perla Santillan, Miguel Strouse and Mosiah Wilson. Bilda Ramírez won the coveted McIntyre Scholarship! continued on Page 3

You were accepted to Universities: Mayra Delgado to Western Washington University, Pedro Mejia to Baylor, Bilda Ramirez to UW Seattle and Brenda Solis to UW Bothell. You accepted leadership positions and helped make a difference in our community by assisting with Project Homeless Connect, Breakfast for Champions, Thanksgiving Basket Delivery, LaVenture Multicultural Night, Día de Los Muertos, Champions of Diversity, Mount Vernon Library s Día de Los Niños, Have a Heart Run, Children of the Valley s Lotería Night, Kulshan Creek Parent Computer Lab and Celebrate the World. You honed leadership skills at the Ethnic Student Retreat at Camp Casey and at the Students of Color Conference in Yakima while Latino Leadership Institute graduates Faride Cuevas, Silvia Guzman, María Macedo, Esmeralda Martínez and Berenice Puente made an impact with their project ADELANTE! which promoted educational opportunities for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students from MVHS and empowered them to strive for a better future. You were adventurous by snowshoeing on Mt. Baker, horseback riding at Skyland Ranch, hiking at Wallace Falls and exploring the Fremont Troll, the Ballard Locks and touring Theo s Chocolates. You designed new sweatshirts, new brochures and sold creative valentine s as a fundraiser. I am proud of each and every one of you! I am excited to hear about your futures-those of you who are graduating and looking forward to seeing the rest of you here on Tuesday, September 24th for our first Calling All Colors Club meeting of Fall Quarter. See you then in Lewis Hall 65 at 12:30! Anita Ordóñez From Anita Ordóñez Page 3

What have you learned, received, from Calling All Colors? Calling All Colors has taught me to be responsible and friendly. I have learned leadership skills and how to make new friends. I was able to share my thoughts during the quarter. I have learned to be more committed. I received a $500 scholarship from the club that helped me pay for tuition and school supplies. Due to my CAC experiences and volunteering opportunities, I was able to apply for many scholarships. I have learned teamwork and communication skills. I had a lot of chances to volunteer and had a lot of fun doing it. I learned how to get more involved with our community. I learned to not be afraid to interact with people you don t know well and to be yourself. I learned that there is always help if you look for it. I learned from different cultures and got many opportunities to volunteer which helps a lot with resumes for scholarships, job and college applications. I received a lot of volunteer awareness and leadership which helped me develop into a strong student at SVC. I received a scholarship from CAC, of which I am very proud. I have learned to take on different volunteer activities that I didn t know about before. It always feels good to give back to the community. Being involved really pays off! I have learned that you have to try new things and not be stuck following one path. I received a lot of support from the members, guidance from the advisor, and a lot of happy memories from the club. I have received so much that I don t have a word to describe how grateful I am for being accepted for whom I am helping me to become a better leader. Memory Book Survey Page 5

What can you tell others about the Calling All Colors Club? Memory Book Survey Page 6 Calling All Colors is a place where you can be yourself and grow as a person and a leader. It is packed with activities and discussions to fully understand the diversity in Skagit County and other places. It s a fun interactive way to get involved in school, the community and make new friends! It builds leadership and helps you become a successful leader ready to face obstacles and overcome them. Calling All Colors welcomes everyone, motivates you to serve your community and make a difference. CAC is like my second family here at SVC. They have welcomed me and make me feel that I belong in this diverse college. This club is awesome, welcoming and fun. It s a great club to join, you meet a lot of people and you are given many opportunities to volunteer and work on your leadership skills. Join Calling All Colors- it s worth an hour of every Tuesday! Calling All Colors is a fun, interactive club that helps you make connections. You get to know new people and work with them to get more involved and give back to our community. You should totally join the club as it is amazing and will give you many experiences to learn from. It s a good way to interact with others with the same interests and helps you to get out of your comfort zone. It s a great place to learn about other cultures, share your ideas and become involved. It s a club that accepts different backgrounds. Super open with everything- we become a big family. If you like to laugh then this is the perfect club for you! Oh and it helps you too

Which event or activity impacted you the most and why? Champions of Diversity (COD) is an amazing event where we take part in the celebration. It s inspiring to see all those HS students receiving awards and scholarships. I received a scholarship from COD and am happy to see that other students are also getting one to continue on with their education. Students of Color Conference impacted me the most. It was something I was afraid of doing but at the end I loved it as it was very inspirational. Club Day I went out and invited people which helped my personal skills. NEW (National Education for Women s) Leadership Puget Sound Institute This week long intensive training at UW taught me the importance of women in leadership and politics. Latino Leadership Institute has helped me gain confidence in developing a project and being successful in it. All Activities especially when we get to mingle because it is a perfect time to get to know each other. Hot Topic Discussions because they help us think outside the box and voice our opinion. Celebrate the World made me see different cultures in our community! All the families and the fun crafts made it a great event! People should be proud to see this amazing event. I got to see a negative side but, I loved the performances. It was a great chance to reflect on what happened and plan and create better solutions for next year. Memory Book Survey Page 7

What comments do you have for club members? We all Rock! And are going to be great people in our future. I like to be part of CAC. Club members were really supportive. Memory Book Survey Page 8 Thanks for making the club better by being there and bringing in your positive and enthusiastic attitudes. Thanks for sharing your ideas and for teaching us about your culture and bringing traditional food from your country for snacks. Get involved. Try new things! You never know until you try Have fun! Keep in touch. It was great getting to know all of you and working together. You are all great! Great memories made and friendships formed. It was fun to get to know everyone. You are all wonderful people!! Make this club become the biggest one in this college and celebrate our diversity! All the club members in CAC are awesome! You all try very hard to make everyone feel welcomed and invited. It has been lots of fun getting to know you. Never met a group of people willing to help the community out like all of you do.

What would you like to add to future Calling All Colors Club meetings and events? I think it would be fun to have a culture, traditions, customs education session in the club meetings-like a dance of some sort or fun facts. It would be great if we had more events of our own, especially in fall. More trips and more events like Celebrate the World University awareness and locations of Washington State colleges I will continue to attend meeting and offer my suggestion for improvement. I would like the meetings to be more fun, interesting. Activities that bring CAC members together, just to hang out. Having the club meet more than once a week during off times. More ice breakers; more connections, one to one. Open mic for anyone at the end of the meeting to talk about whatever they want- More Hot Topics! Nothing for now- everything is great!
