q Refer to a structure by it s NAME [Rally Robin, Quiz-Quiz-Trade]. Students will soon know exactly what to do when you call a structure, so it saves times. q Start off by using Kagan Structures for non-academics. q Use for getting to know each other, team building, social skills. q Slowly begin including structures into lessons with easy to grasp concepts for all students to be successful and gain confidence. q Increase the rigor as students become Kagan fluent. q Practice/rehearse a structure with a group of students to model how it should be done. q Ensure students understand numbering, face/shoulder partners, coaching, praising/gambits, working with a partner. Explain, model, and practice it! q STOP a learning structure right away if students look confused or are not doing it correctly. It s better to fix it right away. q THINK TIME is not optional. It is essential for cooperative learning structures. On average, give around 5 seconds for a general classroom and up to 8-10 seconds for special education or English as a second language (ESL) classes. Monitor & adjust your think time amount for your students. q Kagan Cooperative Learning is a highly social teaching strategy. Students with speech/language challenges may need modifications and support. Students with social anxiety, may work best joining a pair of 2 (as 3), to alleviate stress. Just be flexible! q Get creative! Kagan strategies are known to be used in ALL K-12 grade levels and in ALL academic disciplines. They can literally be used in any lesson!
