8 Minutes Canton Local Board of Education February 8, 2016 Regular Meeting 3-16 The Canton Local Board of Education met in Regular Session on February 8, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Canton Local Administrative Center. All members were present. Resolution #7-16: Agenda Adoption David Brothers made a motion that the Board adopt the agenda. The motion was seconded by Christine Scarpino with all votes being cast as follows: Chris Cole, Aye; David Brothers, Aye; Rick Knight, Aye; Christine Scarpino, Aye; Scott Hamilton, Aye. The minutes of the Organizational Meeting and Regular Meeting, both held January 11, 2016, were approved as written and submitted for the permanent record. Resolution #8-16: Payment of Invoices Scott Hamilton made a motion that the Board approve the payment of invoices as presented. The motion was seconded by Rick Knight with all votes being cast as follows: Christine Scarpino, Aye; David Brothers, Aye; Rick Knight, Aye; Scott Hamilton, Aye; Chris Cole, Aye. Resolution #9-16: Motion by Scott Hamilton that the Board approve the following: A. Monthly financial reports for January including the Cash Reconciliation and Monthly SM2 Comparisons. B. Resolution of Withdrawal from the Northeaster Buckeye Conference WHEREAS, the Canton Local School District is committed to providing a full program of extracurricular activities to promote the success of all students; and WHEREAS, the purpose of an athletic league is to encourage the development of programs with the member schools that promote the goals of good sportsmanship and seek to achieve the goals of educational based interscholastic competitions among member schools; and WHEREAS, the competitive balance and equity are crucial to ensuring a level playing field for all student athletes; and NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that due to unresolved competitive equity issues, the Canton Local School District will withdraw from the Northeastern Buckeye Conference effective June 1, 2018. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that

9 As of August 2018, the Canton Local School District will compete as a founding member of a new athletic conference to include: Alliance City, Carrollton Local, Marlington Local, Minerva Local, West Branch Local, and Salem City School District. The Superintendent is authorized to execute the documents necessary to join the new league. The motion was seconded by Rick Knight with all votes being cast as follows: Scott Hamilton, Aye; Chris Cole, Aye; David Brothers, Aye; Rick Knight, Aye; Christine Scarpino, Aye. Under communications, David Brothers presented the students of the month Dove Dotson and Ian Kenyon. The Facilities Committee Report was given by Scott Hamilton. Significant items of note from the Facilities Report included updates on the progress with the new Canton South High School. Area A has most of the framework finished and is being wrapped with insulation and the steel roof decking has been installed. Area B steel has arrived and as weather permits work will begin to erect steel in Area B. Area D steel decking has been installed over the weight room, locker rooms and rest rooms. Student Representative Adaiah Wright updated the Board on the Winter High School athletic teams and upcoming athletic events and other significant high school events. The Curriculum Committee Report was given by Assistant Superintendent Mallory Floyd. Significant items from the report included notification that the Stark ESC received a Straight A grant in the amount of ~$500,000 that will be split between participating districts. Superintendent Steve Milano updated the Board on District events. Highlights of the report were as follows: The Board has a 10.8 mill Renewal Levy on the March 15 th Ballot that is vital to the financial stability of the District. The District has filed the appropriate paperwork to object to Rite Aid obtaining a liquor permit at their new location on the corner of Faircrest Street and Cleveland Avenue. Career Tech students are busy preparing for competitions including BPA, Graphic Design and Culinary students. Current 8 th Graders made their first visit to the High School for building tours and scheduling information. FMMS Students Arianna Burghy and Cordelia Cerett were chosen by the Ohio Art Education Association to have their artwork on display in Columbus. Walker Elementary students are able to participate in two new after school programs, the Lego Club and Cup Stacking. Also, the Walker Elementary Literacy Night will take place on March 17 th. Multi-County students will take part in a Black History Month Program to be held February 11 th at 1 P.M.

The Board returned to Regular Session at 9:03 P.M. Approved a request from Amy Bush, Vocal Music Teacher, to accompany students to a Vocal Competition at Tiffin University on April 7-8, 2016. There will be one school day missed and no cost to the Board. Approved a request from Chris Bergert, Phil Forshey, Jim Laughlin and Frank Spotleson to accompany BPA students to the State BPA Conference in Columbus, March 17-18, 2016. There will be two school days missed with no cost to the Board. Approved a request from Kristen Smith, Canton South Sports Medicine, to accompany students to the HOSA Leadership Conference at the University of Toledo, April 5-6, 2016. There will be two school days missed and no cost to the Board. Sunday Participation Approved a request from Karla Neff and Elite Silver Stars to host a Dance/Twirling Competition at FMMS on Sunday February 28, 2016. School Calendar Approved the 2016-17 school calendar as presented. Gifts and Donations Approved the following grants and donations: Scott & Edie Hamilton Foundation to Walker Elementary - $1,450.00 Adelman Truck Parts to Walker Elementary - $25.00 for the Lego Club Stone Products to Walker Elementary - $250.00 for the Lego Club Canton South Booster Club as follows: Aluminum Bleachers for Football Stadium $937.68 Donation for Soccer Goals $500.00 Cross Country Tent $816.00 Basketballs for Girls Basketball $428.79 Fall Athletic Banquet $150.00 Softball Field Dirt $852.50

12 College Credit Plus Agreements Approved agreements with Kent State University and Stark State College to provide College Credit Plus opportunities to Canton Local students. Resolution #12-16: Scott Hamilton made a motion that the Board approve a supplemental contract with Moe Daniska, Head Varsity Football Coach, effective for the 2016-17 school term. The motion was seconded by Chris Cole with all votes being cast as follows: Scott Hamilton, Aye; Christine Scarpino, No; David Brothers, Aye; Rick Knight, Aye; Chris Cole, No. Resolution #13-16: Adjournment Scott Hamilton made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
