International GCSEs are taught at many private and independent schools in the UK, and are recognised all over the world as equivalent to regular GCSEs. They re awarded by Edexcel, the qualification branch of internationally-respected educational organisation Pearson. About your course This course involves around 120 guided learning hours and will prepare you for Edexcel International GCSE English Language B (Specification 4EB1) exams. The first exam is available in June 2018, then in January and June onwards. The IGCSE English Language exam consists of one three-hour exam paper that is set and marked by Edexcel. At the beginning of your exam, you ll be given an booklet with extracts to work with. Section Marks What s being tested A 40 Your understanding of, and response to, the extracts given. You ll answer questions on two passages. B 30 C 30 Your ability to write to specific guidelines based on the ideas presented in the source texts. You might be asked to inform or instruct, to advise or persuade or to express your attitudes using a recognised form of writing, such as a letter, report or newspaper article. Your ability to produce an extended piece of writing. It could be personal, narrative, descriptive, argumentative or discursive. You ll have three tasks to choose from. This course doesn t prepare you for the Spoken Language Endorsement (Paper 4EB1/E) exam, which is an optional paper not a mandatory part of the qualification. Throughout your course, you ll submit practice test papers to your tutor. They won t count towards your final grade - they re just there to make sure you re well prepared for the real thing, and to allow you and your tutor to track your progress. Visit our website to find out which exams you can take within the support period for this course. When it s time to book your exams, we ll remind you - this is usually about six months before the exam date. We ll help you find a suitable exam centre and you ll book your exams as a private candidate. Exam centres are usually schools or colleges within the UK that are already presenting internal candidates for the exam (ie. students who go to that school). Not every centre accepts private candidates - we ll provide you with a list of ones that do, and Edexcel also has one on their website. If you have a special relationship with a school, such as it being your old school or your child s school, they might accept you even if their policy is against private candidates. If you re still at school or college and you re sitting exams there, you ll have to go elsewhere for your exams for this course. You can t be both an internal and a private candidate at one exam centre in the same exam diet.
