COURSE SYLLABUS BUSI 321 MONEY AND THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM COURSE DESCRIPTION This course covers the structure and operation of the U.S. and international financial systems, functions of the Federal Reserve, monetary theory, and the impact of monetary policy on financial markets and the economy. IV. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Analyze the relationship between the interest rate and the value of a financial asset. B. Describe the structure of financial markets and understand the operations of financial institutions. C. Discuss the role of the Federal Reserve and the impact of its monetary policy on the economy. D. Analyze monetary and financial articles reported in the Wall Street Journal. E. Apply biblical worldview principles to the area of money and the financial system. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations/notes B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (8) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 8 Discussion Board Forums in this course. The student must post 1 thread of at least 250 words. Each thread must contain any 2 questions you choose to answer from the Things to Think About section found in the assigned Cowan reading for each module/week. The student must post also 2 replies of at least 150 words. D. Wall Street Journal Article Reviews (3) Throughout the course, the student will choose, read, and review articles from the Wall Street Journal that cover 5 of 12 possible topics. A separate article must be used for each different topic chosen. E. Tests (4) The student will complete 4 tests throughout the course covering the information from the previous and current modules/weeks. The tests will be open-book/opennotes with 50 multiple-choice questions. Each test has a 2-hour time limit. Page 2 of 3

Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D. Quizzes/Tests/Exams For timed quizzes/tests/exams, the student is required to complete the quiz/test/exam within the assigned time. For the student who exceeds this time limit, a penalty of 1 point will be deducted for each minute, or part thereof, he/she exceeds the assigned time limit. E.
