Pittsburgh Summer Institute Public Health in Action Introduction The Pittsburgh Summer Institute (PSI) is a partnership between the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) and the Pennsylvania Public Health Training Center (PAPHTC). It provides an experiential learning opportunity for students at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Located in southwestern Pennsylvania, Allegheny County is the second largest urban area in the Commonwealth and includes 130 individual municipalities. For over 50 years, ACHD has been responsible for protecting the public health and environment for more than 1.2 million county residents. PAPHTC, based at the Graduate School of Public Health and operated in partnership with Drexel University School of Public Health and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Center for Rural Health Practice, is part of the national network of public health training centers funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). PAPHTC strengthens Pennsylvania s public health infrastructures by developing and delivering training opportunities that meet the assessed needs of the workforce. Description The PSI provides students who have completed at least one year of graduate studies in public health with an experiential learning opportunity. Students explore the day to day operations of a health department while working on current local public health issues under the supervision of an experienced epidemiologist. In addition to work experience, students attend weekly seminars focused on approaches to public health problem solving, and shadow health department personnel from several program areas (e.g. food inspection, maternal and child health, infectious disease clinics, air quality control). In order to gain additional knowledge of public health policy development and implementation, students attend Board of Health and County Council (if applicable) meetings. Requirements 1. Complete a 200 hour internship 2. Attend weekly seminars (weeks 1 6) 3. Complete at least two site visits to ACHD departments 4. Identify and assess a public health policy topic and/or intervention related to a current local public health issue 5. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Process A completed application and the following materials must be received by the application deadline. Pittsburgh Summer Institute - Public Health in Action Internship Information Introduction The Allegheny County Health Department Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics currently consist of public health physicians, a nurse epidemiologist, a vital statistician, a spatial and hospital data analyst and a data clerk. The Office also now has a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. In addition, there is staff conducting epidemiologic activities in maternal and child health epidemiology and injury prevention. Our internships are designed so interns gain applied public health experience by being integrated into the work of applied epidemiology in the public sector. She or he would work under the supervision of staff epidemiologists who have extensive experience in applying epidemiology and public health principles to health issues in the community. Types of Projects Conducting surveillance of public health conditions, including using bioinformatics to improve surveillance; Collecting, analyzing and disseminating public health data, which could include: o infectious disease epidemiology and control o environmental health data o injury epidemiology and control o chronic disease epidemiology and control o child and family health assessment and intervention o health disparities o data from the Allegheny County Behavioral Risk Factor Survey o establishing a Community Health Needs Assessment Using data for program development and evaluation Disseminating information in the community Writing/publishing reports of investigations and/or analyses Past Projects Investigation of restaurant and daycare associated norovirus outbreaks Assessment of severity of illness among hospitalized patients with 2009 H1N1 influenza Program operation and data analysis for the Allegheny County Child Death Review Team Evaluation of risk factors for infant mortality
