Youth Perfmance Ensembles 2013 EIGHT WEEK SEPT 24 DEC 18, 2013 ADULT CLASSES See our most advanced students perfm and experience what Sty Theatre is all about! Each year, our most dedicated and advanced youth students are selected to join Perfmance Project, f juni high school students, and the Young People s Company, f high schoolers. Over the course of the school year, ensemble members participate in an intensive training experience culminating in a week of perfmances. This festival of iginal adaptations is a highlight of our professional season! The students in our youth ensembles are longtime Piven students who have perfected the art of using our unique improv games to create new wks and exciting literary adaptations. We are truly honed to share their exciting and inspiring wk with the community! IMPROVISATION, GAMES & RISK TAKING BASIC PIVEN (OPEN TO NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS) PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE PERFORMANCE PROJECT PERFORMANCES NOVEMBER 18 NOVEMBER 23 Monday & Friday 7:30PM Tuesday & Thursday 5:00PM Saturday 9:30am & 12:00PM Want to know what Piven is all about? This class allows students to discover the Piven Technique by learning theatre games & improvisation in a fun, supptive, ensemble-based environment. Taught by master teacher Bernard Beck, this class is perfect f all students looking to discover & re-discover their impulsive creativity through our wk. WITH BERNIE BECK Tuesdays 7:30 10:30PM October 15 December 3 BASIC PIVEN SCENE STUDY BASIC / INTERMEDIATE PIVEN In this class, students prepare and rehearse scenes from contempary plays using Piven improvisation and games to deepen characters and relationships. Teaching artist Ryan Kitley exples how we use the impulsiveness of improvisation during the rehearsal process while being restrained by and respectful of a script. Best f students who have taken Improvisation, Games, and Risk Taking Games, Sty, and Scene, but previous experience not required. Students learn Piven s ce improvisational technique and apply it to scripted sties & scenes. This class focuses on a new theme each session and past themes have included Magical Realism, Family and Relationship, and Sties of the Sea. With instruction from our seni teachers, Mikalina Rabinksy and Joanne Underwood, students will create and perfm sties by focusing on text explation, subtext, dialogue and narration. This class is taught long-time Piven teacher Joanne Underwood and intended f students with acting experience and previous Piven course wk. Each session has a different theme and past sessions have focused on the plays of Sarah Ruhl, scenes from Chekhov and Ibsen, and contempary plays like August: Osage County and God of Carnage. Learn the games that fm the ce of the legendary Piven training method. In this class, students will learn to build ensemble, exple improvisation, and adapt and perfm sties. We can guarantee that you ll never see freeze tag the same way again! Saturdays 12:00 1:30PM ADVANCED STORY THEATRE AND IMPROVISATION GRADES 4 TH 6 TH (FOR RETURNING STUDENTS ONLY) Building on the skills developed in Theatre Games and Sty Theatre, returning students take the Piven method to the next level! Students develop essential acting skills - being part of an ensemble, listening, and responding to other peoples energy - in a challenging and supptive environment. In this class, students exple everything from folk tales to myths to iginal sties, while learning how to play within an ensemble of acts. F returning students only. Saturdays 9 10:30AM IMPROVISATION & SCENE STUDY GRADES 6 TH 8 TH In this scene study focused class, students use the fun and impulsive play of improvisation to create lively characters and realistic relationships. Students will rehearse scenes from contempary plays, under the expert direction of their Piven teaching artist. Saturdays 9 10:30AM THEATRE COMBO GRADES 7 TH & 8 TH Perfect f juni high students looking f a supptive environment to stretch their creative limbs! This class offers a great introduction to Piven s acclaimed training method and is an ideal choice f students who are new to theatre who are looking to learn what Piven is all about. Students will learn about improvisation ensembles, Sty Theatre, and Scene Study. Get those creative juices flowing and re-learn how to play. ADVANCED THEATRE COMBO GRADES 7 TH & 8 TH (BY RECOMMENDATION ONLY) Wking intensively within an ensemble, students continue to build their talents in both scene study and sty theatre. Saturdays 10:30 12:00PM HIGH SCHOOL SCENE STUDY INTENSIVE NEW! This class uses the Piven technique to exple the rehearsal process. Students apply improvisation to characters and relationships in scenes; fully rehearsed scenes are perfmed at the end of the session! Mondays 5:00 7:00pm NEW! ADVANCED PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE BY INVITATION ONLY This new perfmance focused class is designed specifically to engage our advanced, returning students and give them an opptunity to develop wk that moves from the classroom to the Piven stage. Over the course of ten weeks, this advanced ensemble will wk together on iginal adaptations under the direction of seni teachers who have wked with our professional perfmance ensembles the Young People s Company and Perfmance Project. As this is a perfmance based class, students will only be allowed one absence. Saturdays 10:30 1:30pm September 21 November 23 Final Perfmance: Saturday, Nov. 23rd at 2:30pm $395 YOUNG PEOPLE S COMPANY BY INVITATION ONLY The most advanced class Piven offers to our youth students, the Young People s Company has a long histy of seeing outstanding perfmers and artists emerge from its folds. Students sign a contract and join an intensive ensemble that meets intensively during the Fall and culminates in a fully-staged week of perfmances. Additional rehearsals required Saturdays 1:30 4:30PM $850 HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE COMBO A great class f high school students new to Piven, we ll use games to build ensemble, exple improvisation, & adapt and perfm sties. Saturdays 10:30AM 12:00PM AUDITION TECHNIQUE: MONOLOGUES FOR THE STAGE Exple adapting our ensemble-driven technique to the art of perfming solo. This wkshop is the perfect opptunity f high school students hoping to develop their monologue skills and get a leg up on their next audition f school, professional theatre, and conservaty programs. Seni Piven teacher Joanne Underwood will help students gain the emotional insight and confidence necessary to try their hand at the spotlight! Saturdays 9:30AM 12:30PM 2 weeks only, December 7 & 14 $95 PERFORMANCE PROJECT GRADES 7 TH 9 TH (BY INVITATION ONLY) The Perfmance Project is an exciting ensemble that our seasoned 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th grade students are invited to join. Signing a contract of commitment, students train as an intensive ensemble that meets during the fall semester and culminates in a fullystaged week of perfmances. Parents, please keep in mind: Piven Theatre cannot be responsible f children befe after class time. It is the responsibility of the parent to be at the Center on time to pick up their children. Teaching staff is not on site outside of class hours. Make-up Class Policy: No make-up classes are provided f students who miss a class, and no refunds pro-rating are offered. Refund Policy: A $75.00 non-refundable deposit is included in the cost of each class. Tuition is refundable (minus the $75 deposit) ONLY if the Piven Theatre Wkshop is notified by the next business day after the first class of the session. After this day, tuition becomes non-refundable. Tuition policies may vary by class, please carefully review your e-mail confirmation. If you have taken advantage of our Early-Bird Discount offer Refer-a-Friend offer, tuition is completely non-refundable. You may transfer free of charge to another class in the same session within the first two weeks of class. Students are responsible f notifying the Piven Theatre Wkshop that they wish to drop a class; not attending does not constitute an official withdrawal. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Cancellations may be made at the last minute and students will be notified by phone and/ e-mail. Tuition will be promptly refunded. The Piven Theatre Wkshop is committed to providing a safe and positive creative environment f our students, and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religious affiliation, any other fact in the registration of students the hiring of staff. As deemed necessary desirable by Piven staff, however, Piven Theatre reserves the right to withdraw refuse registration of, and to expel, any student students who conduct themselves in a manner that is not conducive to a safe and positive creative environment. Students are expected to be courteous and respectful at all times to other students, Piven teachers, Piven staff, and Piven property. Piven is not responsible f any injuries sustained on its premises.
