Dr. Apurba Saikia Principal Furkating College Profile of the College GE Furkating College was established on 6 th August 1981 representing the mass populated area of the Assam-Nagaland Border of Golaghat district, Assam. The people of Furkating and its adjoining area with great enthusiasm and cooperation resolved to establish an institution of Higher Education at Furkating town, the heart of a large area of 25 sq. miles. The College started functioning under the leadership

of Governing Body founder President Late Mohen Baruah, founder Secretary Dugdha Dutta and founder Principal Late Firdus Ali Ahmed. The College was started at Furkating High School from 22/06/1981 and later it was shifted to its own building in an area of about 9 Acres of land at the Tirual Grazing ground which was generously donated by the local people. The College is affiliated to the Dibrugarh University w.e.f. 28/07/1993. After fourteen years of persistent effort and sacrifice of a group of wellwishers and dedicated teachers, the College obtained deficit grant-in-aid status in 1996 w.e.f. 11/01/1996 during the tenure of Governing Body President Late Nagen Neog, then Cabinet Minister of the Government of Assam. The College was brought under provincialized system in 2005 as per provision of Assam College Employees Provincialisation Act 2005. Presently, with the guidance of the present Principal, a group of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers, energetic ministerial staff, the College has been educating a number of pupils up to B.A. degree level and guiding the society with a clear vision. The College is determined to become a pioneer institution of higher education in the state of Assam. A group of renowned educationists from outside the state as members of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) assessed the College in September 2003 and awarded C++ Grade. Again, another group of educationists from different parts of India re-assessed the College in October 2010. It is a matter of great pride that the College was re-accredited with B Grade (point 2.63). This is an inspiration for the College fraternity to go ahead in its quest for quality, perfection and meaningful education. Sales Consultant Course To obtain a degree in any one of these job-oriented courses under NSDC a student must complete six (6) semesters. However, a student can persue two semesters for a Certificate and four (4) semesters for an Advanced Certificate. There is facility of campus recruitment organised by the training partners of NSDC. The course-fee is Rs. 3,500/- per Semester. B.A. PROGRAMME IN THE SEMESTER SYSTEM UNDER DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY (1) Academic Schedule : The Academic Schedule for B.A. programme is administered as per Semester System introduced by Dibrugarh University. The Academic Calender attached herewith. (2) Admission Criteria : The minimum qualification for admission into Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme : A student who has passed the HS Final Examination (10+2) shall be eligible to apply for admission into the First Semester of the Six Semester Degree Course in Arts. Students may collect the application form along with the Prospectus from the college office. (3) Reservation of Seats : Statutory reservation policy of the government is followed in case of selection of eligible candidates for admission. They are encouraged to participate in various district, state & inter-college competitions.

NCC : The facility of NCC for Girls as well as Boys is available in the college. Interested students may contact the respective teachers in-charge for enrolment. NSS : Interested students may contact the Teacher in-charge to be member of NSS unit of the college. Study Circle : The Study Circle is a body constituted by students and teachers of the college for all round development of students. The circle organizes seminars, workshops, debating, quiz etc. The Study Circle hosted memorial lectures in the memory of founder Governing Body President Late Mohen Boruah from 1998 to 2009. All students of the college are considered as member of the Furkating College Study Circle. Information and Career Guidance Cell (ICGC) : The ICGC provides information of vacancies in various departments, public sector undertakings, opportunities for higher education, scholarship and training etc. Besides guiding the students in selecting appropriate course, it conducts training for self- employment. Women Cell : The Women Cell awares the students about women issues and works for the welfare of women and the surrounding areas.

A study center of K.K. Handique State Open University is being run under joint supervision of Principal& Coordinator. The center provides opportunity for higher education through open mode. At present the following programmes are run in the center. (i) BPP (Bachelor Prepatory Programme),(ii) B.A., (iii) B. Com., (iv) BCA (Bachelor of Computer Science), (v) BMC (Bachelor of Mass Communication), (vi) BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), M.A. (Assamese, Education, Political Science), (vii) Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS), Diploma in Elementary Education (2 Years Course) Interested students may contact the Coordinator Mr.Simanta Poddar. Examination and Evaluation : Examination and Evaluation shall be done on a continuous basis. Internal Assessment : In internal assessment different tools may be employed such as written test, assignments, paper presentation, laboratory work, etc. suitable to the courses. Scholarship and Award : The College provides all sorts of the State and Central Govt. scholarships such as National Merit, State merit, Differntly able, SC/ST, TGL, OBC/MOBC to deserving students. Besides these scholarships, the College offers late Annada Borah Memorial award to the best student of HS Final Examination provided by Mr. Jogeswar Borah, Late Tanuram Saikia (former Governing Body President) Memorial award to the best student of TDC Final Examination provided by the family members of Late Tanuram Saikia. Teachers co-teachers co-operation The Teachers Unit has a provision of extending financial support to deserving meritorious students.

Academic Committee : The academic committee maintains a healthy academic atmosphere in the college. (B. C. Borah) Deputy Registrar (Academic) Dibrugarh University SOME IMPORTANT PORTIONS FROM THE DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS FOR THE B.A./B.Sc./ B. Com. PROGRAMMES IN THE SEMESTER SYSTEM, 2010 Attendance : (i) A student who has less than 80% attendance shall not be permitted to sit for the End-semester examination in the course in which the shortfall exists. Provided that it shall be open to the University to grant exemption to a student who has attended a minimum of 70% classes but failed to obtain the prescribed 80% attendance for valid reasons on recommendation of the Head/Director/Cordinator of the Department/Centre on payment of prescribed fee (s). (ii)the Principal of the college/institute with recommendation of the Heads of the Departments shall announce the names of all students who shall notbe eligible to appear in the End-semester examinations in the various courses due to non- fulfilment of the criteria of internal assessment and attendance, and send a copy of the same to the University. In such cases, the student shall have to re-enroll in the relevant course(s) with the next batch. Examination and Evaluation : (a) Examination and evaluation shall be done on a continuous basis. (b) There shall be 20% marks for internal assessment and 80% marks for Endsemester examination in each course during every semester. (c) There shall be no provision for re-evaluation of the answer-scripts of the endsemester examinations. However, a candidate may apply for re-scrutiny. (d) Intenal Assessment : (i) In internal assessment, different tools may be employed such as written tests, assignments, paper presentation, laboratory work, etc. suitable to the courses. (ii) The students shall be informed in advance about the nature of assessment. Students shall compulsorily attend in the process of internal assessment, failing which they will not be allowed to appear in the End-semester examination. A student cannot repeat In-Semester examinations. However, if a student fails to appear in any of the In-Semester examinations on valid

reasons, the department concerned may arrange special in-semester examination whenever necessary. (e) End Semester Examination : (i) There shall be one End semester examination carrying 80% Marks in each course of a Semester covering the entire syllabus prescribed for the course. The End semester examination is normally a written/ laboratory-based examination/project Work/Dissertation. (ii) The Controller of Examinations shall then make necessary arrangements for notifying the dates of the end semester examinations and other procedures as per Dibrugarh University Rules (at least 20 days in advance) and the Academic Calendar notified by the University. (iii) Normally, the end semester examination for each course shall be of there hour duration. (f) Setting of question papers, moderation of question papers, evaluation of answer scripts, scrutiny, tabulation of marks, etc. and announcement of results, shall be governed by the Dibrugarh University Examination Ordinance 1972 (as amened upto date). (g) Practical Examination : Practical Examinations of a Semester shall normally be held prior to the End Semester Examinations. (h) Betterment Examination : (I) A student shall be entitled to take the betterment examination in any two theory courses of any of the six semester after passing the Sixt Semester examination only once. In this case, the higher marks secured by the student shall be retained. The candidates shall have to apply for the betterment examination within one year of passing the Sixth semester examination. (II) Ne betterment shall be allowed in th practical examinations. (i) Any difficulty which may arise in the course of operation of these regulations relating to holding of examinations shall be removed by the Examination Committee of the Dibrugarh University Results and Progression : (a) A candidate, shall be declared as passed a course,provided he/she secures - (i) at least 30% marks in the course in the end semester examinations. (ii) at least 30% marks in the course in aggregate in the in- and end semester examinations. (b) A candidate shall be seclared as passed a semester, provided he/she passes all the course of a semester independently. (c) The marks of in-semester examinations obtained by the candidate shall be carried over for declaring any result.

(d) A candidate who fails ordoes not appear in one or more courses of any end semester examinations up to Sixth Semester shall be provisionally promoted to the next higher semester with the failed course as carry over course(s). Such candidates will be eligible to appear in the carry over course in the next regular examinations of those courses. However, the following restrictions shall be applicable : (i) A candisate shall be entitled to a maximum of there consecutive chances to clear a course. (ii) If a candidate clears the sixth semester examination before clearing all the courses of the previous semesters, the result of the sixth semester examination of that candidate shall be kept withheld and his/her results shall be announced only after he/she clears the courses of the previous semesters. (e) A student must pass all his/her semester examinations within Five (5) years from the date of admission to the First semester of any programme. (f) Since the semester system involves continuous assessment, there shall be no scope for a student to appear as a private candidate in any programme in this system. (g) A candidate shall be declared to have passed the Six-Semester Degree B.A./B.Sc./B.Com programme provided he/she has passed all the Semesters and in all the Courses separately. (h) The degrees shall be offered to each candidate, who has passed the Six- Semester Degree B.A./B.Sc./B.Com programme i the following manner : General (non-major) Programme 60% and above marks in First aggregate Division Major/Specialty Programme 60% and above marks in major courses in aggregate First Class 50% and above but less than 60% marks in aggregate 30% and above but less pass than 50% marks in aggregate Second Division Simple Pass 50% and abobe but less than 60% marks in major courses in aggregate 30% and above but less than 50% marks in major in aggregate Second Class Simple pass (the same degree shall be treated as general degree for B.A./B.Sc./B.Com programme
