Faculty of ARTS CREATIVE WRITING / CREATIVE & PROFESSIONAL WRITING Module Catalogue Study Abroad Students Semester two 2017/2018

Module Code: CW1103 Module Name: Creative Non Fiction Level: Level 4 Module Tutor: Nick Joseph This module is designed to enable students to develop their own creativity through nonfictional writing, and to learn how to express observations, experience and perceptions in the written form. The module is also intended to develop students' creative and critical in tandem, understanding how to read and interpret writing as much as to produce it. As such students will be introduced to a varied range of approaches to literature/writing/creativity that focus on the text from a writer's creatively critical perspective. Most work will be done in workshop groups, graduating to the production of independent pieces of non fiction, wherein students will be encouraged to examine the relationship between practice and theory in relation to their own writing. joint English Language Studies Single Honours 001: 2000 Word Piece Of Non Fictional Writing 60% 002: Essay 40%

Module Code: CW1105 Module Name: Creative Voice I Level: Level 4 Module Tutor: Vanessa Harbour This module is designed as the first opportunity for students to reflect on their own creative writing in individual or small group tutorial format with their module tutor. Whilst developing a specific piece of work they will be encouraged to examine ideas of creativity, inventiveness and associative thinking in relation to themselves, and then to relate this to a critical exploration of the processes whereby raw experience is transformed into language. These processes will be investigated by using a range of literary methods. At the same time students will be encouraged to look with a critical eye on contemporary critical and cultural theories, such as historical and social dimensions of writing, cultural context, and on debates relating to the state of language and contemporary creativity. 001: 002: 003: A Portfolio Of Work That Traces The Development Of A Creative Piece Of Writing (2000 Words) A 2 Minute Reading Of The Creative Piece A 1500 Word Self Reflective Essay That Includes Reflection On At Least One Event/Performance/Reading Witnessed During 50% 10% 40%

Module Code: CW1109 Module Name: Creativity Level: Level 4 Module Tutor: Judy Waite This module will allow students to focus, at an introductory level, on ideas of creativity and how these relate to various forms of artistic/creative output. The module will not restrict itself to the consideration of writing, and will instead encourage students to express themselves creatively across a variety of forms. The reason for this is that the module is intended to free students up from some of the constraints that might interfere with their own creativity, and to think in fresh and exciting ways (even when confronting familiar subject matters). As such, students will be encouraged to examine ideas of creativity, inventiveness and imaginative thinking in relation to themselves and others, and to embed these in their own creative practice. The module will introduce students to a varied range of poetry, embodying different approaches to writing and creativity that focus on the text from a writer's creatively critical perspective. The module will thus engage directly with some of the key issues in the study of the production of poetry. Practical work will be done in workshop groups, graduating to the production of independent poems in different forms, where students will be encouraged to examine the relationship between practice and theory while they are writing. The module will consider how fiction can relate to other forms of creative expression, such as poetry, script, and nonfiction, and engage with issues relating to authorship, the role of the narrator, and the use(s) of a variety of forms of language. These will all be considered in relation to a range of texts and writers. The novel form in particular will be analysed for the ways in which it can develop character, plot, setting, and dialogue. Students will be encouraged to think about issues of genre, market, and publication. All of this will be informed by relevant critical and cultural theories. Module Code: CW3217 Module Name: Creative Visions Level: Level 6 Module Tutor: Amanda Boulter We are living in extraordinary times. The world is changing and many people are asking what our lives will be like in 2050. This module tackles that question head on. It asks you to engage with some of the most challenging issues of our time (climate change and peak oil) and imagine what our future might look like. For the first part of the module we will watch films, read key texts and discuss the ideas and debates we re learning about. We ll be thinking about how these issues affect us personally, how they make us feel, how they reflect on our lives and the way we live (personally and collectively). The first assignment will then give you the chance to reflect on these ideas, both creatively and critically, and is designed to be as flexible as possible to allow you to respond in your own way. You ll be asked to reflect upon the way we live now and can do this through writing fiction, poetry, a song, a play, etc. or you may choose to write a journal, create a folder, or write a critical review of one of the key texts. For the second part of the module we focus on the future. We will consider various fictional models (from the apocalyptic to the agrarian, from business as usual to technological salvation) and read and discuss utopian and dystopian texts. The last weeks will be dedicated to workshopping your creative vision of what lies ahead. joint 001: A 2,000 Word Self Reflective Essay 40% 002: 2,500 Word Creative Piece 60%

Module Code: CW3221 Module Name: Science Fictions And Fantasies Level: Level 6 Module Tutor: Mark Rutter The module focuses on the reading and writing of science and fantasy fictions, beginning with a consideration of the historical evolution of the form and ultimately examining fictions of the more recent past and present. The idea is that students get to master the basic techniques involved in producing writing within this particular genre. As such students will be introduced to a range of relevant writing from different periods, but with emphasis upon modern forms, and will have the opportunity to experiment in the production of their own writings. Module Code: PW2002 Module Name: Travel Writing Level: Level 5 Module Tutor: Kass Boucher The module will introduce students to both historical and contemporary forms of travel narrative and encourage them to think about the evolution of the genre and the influences that have shaped it. They will ultimately digest their readings, experiences, and research into a presentation on a specific location or travel narrative, and will also refine their own travel narrative based on their own experiences. It will be important in so doing to think about the potential audiences and sites of publication for their work, as well as to consider the competitions and calls for papers from newspapers/magazines/journals for travel stories that are regularly advertised. By the end of the module students should be in a position to submit some of their work to one such site. joint 001: Presentation 50% 002: 2,000 Word Creative Piece 50%
