6th UMAEL Congress The 160th year old campus of Institut Polytechnique LaSalle in the city of Beauvais France was the venue for the 6th UMAEL Congress held from 5th to 9th June, 2015. Brothers and Alumni assembled from more than 20 countries and PARC was represented by delegations from Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines and Thailand, accompanied by Br Andre Labelle and Br Tom Lavin. The theme was now the familiar Lasallian call to Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve. Br Robert Shieler, Superior General, was the keynote speaker and, in a wide-ranging address, encouraged the Alumni to improve networking capacity in service of the mission. Ample time was provided in the program for delegations to interact and dialogue. A number, including our PARC delegates, were invited to give testimonies on how they are supporting the Lasallian mission to marginalized youth. At the conclusion of the Congress, elections were held for the new Executive Committee to serve for the next four years. Mr. Henry Atayde (Philippines), outgoing President, passed on the baton to Mr. Mickael Portevin (France), and Dr. Tsunetoshi Itoh of Japan was nominated to represent PARC, the first Japanese alumnus to do so. On the final day, 9th June, delegates had the option of visiting either Rheims or Rouen. At Rheims we visited the newly refurbished Hotel de La Salle, the family home of the Founder, and the Convent of the Sisters of the Child Jesus where he met Adrian Nyel. Hospitality at LaSalle during the Congress was excellent and the program was very efficiently run thanks to the work of Br Claude Reinhardt, Mr. Henry Atayde and his Committee, and Director of the school, Mr. Philippe Choquet who was attentive to all our needs. Vocation Camp in Singapore Over the years, the growth in the number of young men joining us or at least showing interest are due in large part to the efforts of our Young (and young-at-heart) Brothers. Br. Kelvin Tan FSC from Singapore has been working hard to get young men to become interested in our life. Here s a report from him on the recent Vocation Camp he organised: The Brothers in Singapore recently held a Vocation camp over the weekend on 19-21 June in the Brothers residence in St. Patrick; a 3-day programme for Catholic Student from SJI, SJI International and St. Patrick's School. These Lasallians have been identified as showing an interest in getting to know the life of a Brother, which hopefully helps them to understand and appreciate their vocation in life. It was a wonderful experience both for the Lasallians as well as the Brothers. The Brothers helped to make this Vocation camp a success by providing invaluable sessions and sharing. The Lasallians enjoyed and was moved when they experienced how the Brothers lived in community together. During these three fruitful and grace filled days, they learnt about prayer, meditation, vow formula, mission and had time to rest and cycle from the community to the gardens. We hope to have another one next year. Opening of the House of Studies On 12 June 2015 the Scholasticate or House of Studies (HOST) at DLSU Manila officially opened. HOST offers a 1-year post-novitiate program that focuses on Theology, English, and various exposure experiences and another year of studies in preparation for a Philippine Teaching License. Some Districts from the Region also send their Scholastics to HOST. The Director of HOST is Br. Michael Broughton FSC. He is assisted by capable staff: Brs. Antonio Cubillas FSC, Sebastian Sripuk FSC, and Iñigo Riola FSC. Br. Sockie de la Rosa is based in HOST as he prepares for final vows; he helps out in pedagogy classes, schedule permitting. The Scholastics from LEAD are: (Second Year) Br. Rainier Guillergan FSC, (First Years) Br. Eugene de Luna FSC, Br. Irwin Climaco, Br. Joseph Pi FSC, Br. Marvin Sipin FSC, and Br. Philip Bancha FSC. DLSP donated four classrooms in Trinidad Elementary School in Trinidad, Tubabao Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Another 4 classrooms were donated in Mercyville Elementary School in Barangay 99-Diit Tacloban City and also 3 classrooms in San Miguel Elementary School in San Miguel Dulag, Leyte. Br. Jose Mari Jimenez FSC - President of DLSP led the ceremonial turn-over to the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 8 Director Dr. Luisa B. Yu, the school principals, teachers, students, local officials and members of the communities. Br. JJ was joined by Br. Kenneth Martinez FSC, President of De La Salle Lipa; Br. Michael Broughton FSC, Vice Chancellor for Mission of De La Salle University, along with volunteers from the three lead schools, De La Salle University Dasmariñas, De La Salle Lipa and De La Salle Santiago Zobel School. The residents of the said barangays, DepEd officials and teachers were very delighted to receive the new classrooms. The ceremonies in the three sites began by celebrating the Holy Eucharist followed by the blessing of the classrooms. During the short program, Br. JJ presented a symbolic key to the school principal, students, teachers and DepEd Representatives as a sign of the Turn Over of responsibility of safe keeping and management to them. The classroom donation is just one of the components of the One La Salle Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Project (OLSYRRP) which shall continue for another year for more interventions on livelihood, health, environment, youth organization and DRRM.
