Università degli Studi di Messina Department of Economics M.Sc. in Banking & FInance A.A. 2017/18 CALL FOR APPLICATION Presentation The Department of Economics at the University of Messina organizes a M.Sc. in Banking & Finance. The course is entirely taught in English and is aimed at graduates with and without experience wanting to specialize in banking and financial markets, manage portfolios of assets and advice on investment. Students will undertake security valuation and portfolio management. The knowledge and skills from the taught modules will be blended together for the investment analysis projects. Professional Profiles This programme provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to careers in the banking, financial and corporate sector. Graduates can progress in fields such as financial and investment, stock broking, investment and commercial banking and corporate finance. Objective of the Programme The Master in Banking and Finance will enable students to acquire the knowledge necessary to professionally manage and advice on assets of any amount. The course is aimed at both professionals in the financial sector and graduates without experience wanting to: Specialize in banking and financial markets Manage portfolios of assets Advice on investment The programme brings the latest advances of applied research and is specifically designed to impart a thorough knowledge of the main components of investment banking and the changing structure of the international financial industry. The programme has the objective of transferring knowledge and understanding of: 1. Financial systems 2. Banking systems of advanced and transitional economies 3. Valuation techniques used in financial markets 4. Strategic decision-making within a financial context 5. Appropriate statistical tools 6. Risk management techniques
In addition, the programme has the objective of giving transferable and practical skills such as: 1. Working in team 2. Managerial skills 3. Working under deadlines 4. Managing econometric and statistical tools 5. Analysing wide datasets Employability Areas of employment that this programme prepares graduates for: Private Banking sector, Financial institutions and Financial regulatory bodies Specific roles which graduates generally take after this course: Asset Managers, Financial Advisors, Financial Analyst, Commercial Banking Manager Previous student cover position in banks, insurance companies, private firms and public sector both In Italy and Europe. Structure of the course The course will start on the 1 st of October 2017 and will end on the 30 th November 2018. It is structured in three terms: First Term (October December 2017): Pre-courses in Mathematics and Statistics English for Business Second term (January July 2018). Students will attend 8 core courses: 1. Advanced Mathematics for Economics and Finance 2. Econometrics for Finance 3. Corporate Finance 4. Investment Management 5. Applied Financial Econometrics 6. Banking Regulation 7. Macrofinance 8. Asset & Risk Managment
At the end of each module, students will sit a written examination. Resit exams will be held at the end of September 2018. Third Term (August September 2018): Student will prepare their final dissertation under the supervision of an academic member of the staff. In addition, they will be required to take an internship either in a bank on in a financial company or in an insurance company. Admission Requirements Students should have been awarded at least a three-years undergraduate degree in any subject. Admission Application Students can submit their application via email to masterebf@unime.it. The email subject should indicate Application for M.Sc. in Banking & Finance 2017-18). Application deadline is 25 th September 2017. Students that are not in possession of an undergraduate degree but are expected to obtain it can still apply. They will receive a conditional offer and they are required to submit evidence of their degree within the 31 st December 2017. Failing to provide such an evidence will determine the exclusion from the Programme. Candidates should include in their email: 1) CV 2) Scanned ID 3) Evidence of their undergraduate degree (if any). Such a document should include the subject of their degree, the name of the Institution that awarded it, the date of award, the list of courses taken along with the obtained score and the final mark; 4) Evidence of any further higher qualification. All the above documents should be in pdf format. Students may use the included application template. If the number of application is larger than 90, the Department will organize Skype interviews with the candidates, who will be informed about the date of time of those interviews. Tuition fees Tuition fees are equal to 2,500. They can be paid in five instalments. The first one is due within 15 days after receiving the offer of a place in the Programme. The Department does not offer scholarship. However, the 10 students, that will perform better at the end of the Programme, will receive a prize of 500. The fees do not cover accommodation and living expenses. The University can offer a limited amount of rooms in its dormitory (the cost is approximately 180 per month). Alternatively, the International Students Office may support students in order to find a private accommodation.
