Perfect for teaching the Framework We help you use the Framework to meet the needs of your school and your pupils. Not only does Catalyst offer 3-part lesson plans for every lesson, but it also gives you a choice of starters, main activities and plenaries. Covers the full ability range As well as parallel Red and Green Pupil Books, Catalyst offers a wealth of ready-made differentiated sheets at core, help and extension level. We can confidently say that no other course offers as much differentiated support as Catalyst! Software to motivate and inspire Catalyst Assessment for Learning and Presentation software help you to get the very best from Catalyst with a minimum of effort. 2

Catalyst Pupil Books As well as following the QCA Scheme of Work order, Catalyst Pupil Books provide you with a stimulating way to teach the five key scientific ideas from the Framework: cells, forces, particles, energy and interdependence. Yet that s not all! The Catalyst Teacher Resource CD-ROMs enable you to get the very best from both the Red and Green Pupil Books. Read on to see how these components fit together to produce a course that is perfect for you. Maximise progression from Day One What the Catalyst Pupil Books do... Each concept is clearly explained at a level that s right for the pupil at that stage of their learning. Do you remember? boxes build on pupils learning from Key Stage 2. How the CD-ROMs support the Pupil Books... Detailed lesson plans on the CD-ROMs highlight the learning outcomes, so you can see how much progress pupils are expected to make. Before starting a unit, you can use transition quizzes to identify any gaps in pupils understanding from KS2. Worksheets help them get up to speed. Starter and plenary sheets support 3-part lessons. Motivate all abilities What the Catalyst Pupil Books do... Red Pupil Books challenge and extend mainstream to higher-ability pupils, helping them to achieve their very best. Green Pupil Books support lower-ability pupils, keeping them engaged and encouraged throughout each lesson. How the CD-ROMs support the Pupil Books... There is a wealth of activities and homeworks on the CD-ROMs at core, help and extension level. In addition, Specials sheets support every single double-page spread in the Pupil Books giving pupils targeted support where they need it most. Focus on ideas and evidence and scientific enquiry What the Catalyst Pupil Books do... Think About pages encourage pupils to work like scientists and use scientific models. Do you know? boxes contain interesting or unusual facts, such as the history of some science inventions and ideas. How the CD-ROMs support the Pupil Books... Sc1 is integrated throughout the course and each lesson plan spells out where Sc1 Framework objectives are covered. Special investigation lessons on the CD-ROMs specifically address the Framework Yearly Teaching Objectives that cover Sc1. Practical activities help to develop Sc1 skills throughout. 4 For full details on the Teacher Resource CD-ROMs, please turn to pages 7-12.

Sample pages Do you remember? boxes build on pupils learning from Key Stage 2. Sample pages from Catalyst Red Book 1 The larger text and carefully controlled language level make the pages more accessible for lower achievers. Red and Green books have identical pagination, so you can use them side by side in a mixed-ability class. Sample pages from Catalyst Green Book 1 More regular in-text questions and the end-of-spread questions build up pupils knowledge and confidence throughout the lesson. Summaries appear on every double-page spread, reinforcing learning from the main text. 5

Catalyst Pupil Books continued Sample Think About pages from Catalyst Red Book 1 Focusing on Sc1 Sc1 underpins Catalyst in the same way that Sc1 underpins your pupils knowledge and understanding of Science as a whole. Scientific Enquiry From planning an experiment and predicting outcomes to using tables, diagrams, charts and graphs to explain results and evaluate the strength of evidence, Catalyst activities and investigations focus on developing pupils investigative skills. Ideas and Evidence With Catalyst, pupils have many opportunities to see how a combination of creative thinking and evidence helps scientists to develop their ideas. Pupils also discover that it is important to test explanations by using them to make predictions and by seeing if the evidence matches those predictions. Developing thinking skills Throughout Catalyst, pupils are encouraged to develop their skills in application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. But Catalyst goes further than that. A Think About feature in every unit concentrates specifically on helping pupils to think like scientists including tackling their misconceptions. Think About pages stimulate discussion in pairs, small groups, or as a whole class. Pupils are encouraged to discuss the questions rather than write down individual answers. The Think About pages lead pupils to question their thinking in a structured way. Many questions are open-ended and do not have right or wrong answers. Answers can often be met with a question that moves pupils thinking forward. Sample Think About spreads from Catalyst xxxxxx Book 1 Think About spreads develop pupils skills in completing science investigations. Pupils are encouraged to work like scientists and use scientific models. Pupils solve problems through group work and discussion. 6

Pain-free planning Sample unit guide from Teacher Resource CD-ROM 1 The unit guide makes it easy for you to see what Yearly Teaching Objectives from the Framework are covered. A core route through each unit is based on an average of 2 teaching hours per week. Extra lessons are provided so Catalyst can work for you, whatever your timetable. The guide refers you to the interactive audiovisual material on the CD-ROM Heinemann Presents... Catalyst 1. You can see clearly where misconceptions are addressed. For maximum flexibility, you can choose from a whole range of starters, main activities and plenaries. Hyperlinks enable you to go straight to the resource listed on the lesson plan.
