My name is Leigh and I am the Academic Advisor in the Heavener School of Business. familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): My name is Meredith Beaupre and I am an advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I'll be in the Liberal Arts and Sciences chatroom familychatmoderator(nsfp_kris): How is everyone's student liking their Spring classes? familychatmoderator(al_cals): Hello, My name is Allen Wysocki. I am an Associate Dean in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. I will be in the Agricultural and Life Sciences room. familychatmoderator(owen_hhp Adviser): Hello, My name is Owen and I am an adviser in the College of Health and Human Performance. PaCE majors include: Sport Management, Health Education, and Tourism, Recreation and Event Management. familychatmoderator(herschel_fshn): Herschel Johnson here! Undergraduate adviser for the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department. Majors include: Dietetics, Food Science and Nutritional Sciences. KSallent: I know my son's biggest complaint is the "lack of" help from his counselor in course selection, transcripts and AP scores have been a nightmare, again with not much help/guidance. KSallent: My son's major was Animal Science which after one semester is no longer offered?? familychatmoderator(judy and Bridget from CJC): Good afternoon, all! My apologies for joining late. Bridget Dunbar and I are here representing the College of Journalism and Communications. familychatmoderator(herschel_fshn): KSallent can you add/join the Agricultural and Life Sciences chat room so we can work with you outside of the lobby? Thanks! familychatmoderator(al_cals): KSallent. The major is offered, but no longer through the PaCE route. Taking and getting the critical tracking courses in a face to face setting was proving to be too difficult. We are committed to your son getting to campus. Perhaps the best thing would be for us (son included) to have a phone call or a live visit. What do you think? KSallent: Sure! kristiasmom: Thanks for the opportunity to connect... once the students have met the Pace credit requirements is the transfer process to campus automatic to become a "regular" UF student? familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Hi Kristiasmom... kristiasmom: Hi... familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Your student will work with his/her advisor(s) in the college to complete the process... familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Your student will be receiving communication about the process and his/her next steps. This email correspondence will start the term before we believe the student will transition. Does this answer your question?
familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): I should clarify I believe they will automatically get an email. They will receive a transition hold around mid late February, I believe. kristiasmom: she is on track to accomplish that. would she still be considered a pace student or regular UF? kristiasmom: If she chooses to transfer out of pace is the transfer guaranteed considering she is already a UF student? familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): She always be a PaCE student, but all of our PaCE students are fully UF students from day one. familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Her transition to her PaCE major on campus is guaranteed, assuming she meets all the transition and PaCE requirements. familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): If she wants to change majors once on campus, she needs to speak with an advisor in that college kristiasmom: I see... once on campus are the Pace students classified or limited any differently than the others? familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): @Kristinasmom There may be differences in the majors that are available to them. What major is your daughter interested in? kristiasmom: the real question is should we be considering a transfer out of pace into "normal" UF for her to have the same choices as the others? She is not sure of her major and is concerned that her current status as a Pace student will limit her chances to move between majors because of the way her application would look compared to other on campus UF students... familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): In order to do what I think it is you're asking, she will need to apply as a transfer student to the program of her choice. This will still be a conversation she should have with an advisor in her prospective major(s). We can guide her as to what her best path is based on where she is and what her goals are. If she's not sure of her major/path, that is also something that our advisors can help her with. familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Does this help at all? kristiasmom: OK, so as per your explanation, then are they still distinguished from on campus UF students in that process? kristiasmom: are the pace kids in their own category in other words? familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): @Kristiasmom Yes, that is correct. What that means varies by college (based on major of interest). Once we know what your daughter's is we can give you a more finite response. kristiasmom: Once on campus, if she goes to change her major to non pace major (and is accepted) would she be required to officially make a transfer out of pace at that time or not? kristiasmom: not to beat it to death, just to completely understand the process familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): @Kristiasmom No if she is allowed to change to a non PaCE major in this case, she will be a residential PaCE student in a non PaCE major. As advisors we would be happy to speak with both you and your student about your concerns. I would encourage you to start with her PaCE advisor first and they will direct you to an advisor for another college if necessary. kristiasmom: thanks. familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): @Kristiasmom You're welcome!!!
familychatmoderator(leigh_businessadvisor): Kristiasmom, to add on to what Daniel said, if your daughter were to apply to a non PaCE major as a transfer student and be accepted, she would no longer be a PaCE student, and she would not need to officially "transfer" out of PaCE. The normal progression of a PaCE student is that once they "transition," they are no longer required to take online classes, and they will begin paying regular tuition/fees. After the "transition," there is no difference between a PaCE student and a traditional student other than the major options. kristiasmom: Great, so in terms of all other aspects of student life, dorm selection etc, no difference at all for the incoming Pace students? familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): Dorm selection is a question for housing (simply because most of us don't know much about housing selection processes), but once your student has transitioned to campus, all the student life aspects should be the same as for students who started at UF residentially. The main difference is going to be with majors. kristiasmom: Great, thanks for the clarification! familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): no problem! :) familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @kristiasmom, I'm checking in on the Housing question for you right now! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @kristiasmom, PaCE students are welcome to live on campus when they transition in. If your student applied for Housing last year when they applied to UF, they will have many options when selecting a building and room type on campus. Students who applied earlier for Housing will have first selection and since they applied a year before this incoming class, they will be at the beginning of the selection pool. If your student has not applied for Housing yet, I would recommend them applying as soon as they know which semester they will transition to campus so that they get the best selection possible. kristiasmom: Thanks! I believe we did request and pay for housing during our initial application. Would this be visible through Isis (student portal)? kristiasmom: another question, when we calculate UF GPA would it be correct to add fall + spring divided by 2? familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): no it depends on the credit hours per course. Daniel is going to send you the link to the gpa calculator kristiasmom: Thanks!! very helpful familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @kristasmom, that likely isn't available through the portal, but if you call the Housing Office and ask for Assignments, they will be able to verify if they have an application on file. familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): @Kristiasmom Here is a calculator that we often use when working with students.http://warrington.ufl.edu/undergraduate/myheavener/calculator.asp kristiasmom: got it, thanks! familychatmoderator(daniel_clas Advisor): Our pleasure! kristiasmom: Thank you all for your time & assistance. It's been very helpful :) familychatmoderator(meredith_clas Advisor): I'm going to jump off the chat to make my next meeting. Have a great Friday, all! familychatmoderator(leigh_businessadvisor): Have a good weekend, everyone! familychatmoderator(nsfp_kris): This concludes our chat for today. Online PaCE Family Chat Agriculture and Life Sciences Friday, January 22, 2016 familychatmoderator(herschel_fshn): Has your son had contact with Amie Imler, the new Animal Sciences adviser? KSallent: I'm not sure but I will give him that name. Can he contact her or does he wait to hear from her? familychatmoderator(herschel_fshn): amie.taylor@ufl.edu is the new advisers contact email and she has put effort into taking over the PaCE effort. He can contact her anytime and can also schedule a meeting to see her face to face to make a plan. KSallent: Hopefully that will help. Thanks for that information. familychatmoderator(herschel_fshn): You are welcome! Do you have any other questions or concerns at this time? KSallent: Not at this time.
