Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) The IIE Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management aims to develop critical thinking and reflective skills in graduates holding a Bachelor of Commerce (with one of the management disciplines at NQF level 7) or equivalent degree. In line with industry demand, this degree will build on a broad knowledge base of business developed at undergraduate level in order to deepen students insight and expertise in the core fields of management. This degree aims to extend students knowledge on contemporary management theories in the modern day business context. Students will engage with various management theories, research methodologies and techniques with the aim of applying and advancing their knowledge of the contemporary business world. This qualification will provide students with the expertise and in depth theoretical knowledge in management that will support their progression in an organisation, producing a well rounded, industry ready post graduate student. Graduates will be equipped with a solid understanding of key management and leadership attributes, which will develop higher level business acumen in students. The theories of business will also be underpinned by the ability to apply solution focused, systemic research geared towards building businesses in a local and international context. The IIE Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management degree will qualify highly skilled business managers and leaders who are able to work in and effectively contribute towards management in the 21st century. Through a range of cutting edge management related competencies that includes innovation and contemporary issues relating to business management, the purpose and outcomes of this qualification are seen as critical to preparing students to take up positions in a variety of business and related sectors.

What is this Degree s accreditation status? The IIE s Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management degree is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 120 credit qualification on level 8 (SAQA ID: 97601). Who is the Honours degree aimed at? Graduate students with an interest in furthering their knowledge in the management field. What entry requirements will I need to study this Honours degree? An appropriate Bachelor s degree; OR An appropriate Advanced diploma, provided that a 360 credit diploma OR appropriate equivalent has been completed. Candidates are normally required to have a minimum final year average of 60% in their third year modules (NQF7) for the aforementioned prerequisite qualification. Those with a final year average of 58 59% may be considered but will be conditionally admitted. An appropriate degree would be a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) or Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or equivalent qualification(s), with one of the management disciplines at NQF level 7. Candidates must have completed a foundation research module at the undergraduate level, preferably at NQF level 7. Those who have not completed a foundation research module at undergraduate level will be required to do The IIE Introduction to Research SLP and to demonstrate an understanding of basic research before they can commence their research report. Graduates of The IIE who do not meet the conditional admissions requirements for admission to Honours can enrol for and repeat all or some of their NQF 7 modules in order to improve their marks so that they can meet the entry requirements for Honours. These graduate students will then receive an additional transcript after the completion of the repeat module(s), where the repeat module(s) will appear as a second iteration of the module(s) on the transcript. The marks from the second iteration can then be used for admission to Honours in the subsequent academic year. This option is only available to graduates from The IIE and do not apply to graduates from other HE institutions.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL): Candidates who fall outside the above criteria, but who can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of The IIE that they have an appropriate, related qualification or work based learning, which has taken the candidate to the equivalent of an NQF level 7 Communication related qualification, may be considered for admission into this programme through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Please note, requirements for entry to this qualification are correct at the time of printing, however, these may change. At the time of registration, please check that the entry requirements have not changed. If you are an international student, you must ensure that: you have an equivalent qualification to the aforementioned which has been evaluated by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA); you have a valid study visa issued in the name of The IIE that covers the duration of your studies. What must I pass in order to graduate with this Bachelor s degree? In order to be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management degree, you must have achieved a minimum final year mark of fifty percent (50%) for each module of the programme. However, if you intend to enrol for a Masters qualification at the end of your studies, an average year mark of 65% should be obtained for the honours qualification. With what qualification will I graduate? You will graduate with The IIE Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management degree. Career opportunities: what career areas can I pursue once I have completed this Bachelor s degree? The IIE s Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management degree is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 120 credit qualification on level 8 on the same level as other equivalent undergraduate degrees at South African universities. The opportunity to apply for further study at any South African university exists subject to meeting specific programme entrance requirements.

How is this Honours degree structured at Varsity College? The IIE BCom Hons (Management) is either a one year full time degree available through Varsity College or a one and half year part time degree available through The Business School at Varsity College. In addition to attending lectures, you will be expected to spend time conducting your own study plan as well as research and work on assignments. Learning material is of the highest quality and offers students a blended learning experience where the face to face teaching sessions are supplemented with specific online learning activities, digital content/study material, relevant current textbooks and assessments. To gain the most from the blended learning experience and Varsity College s Wireless classrooms and campuses, students are required to BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) mobile device netbook, laptop or tablet to develop the necessary academic and digital literacies over the duration of this degree. The curriculum below is correct at the time of print. Please note that in line with academic practice, The IIE s curriculum is annually reviewed thus changes may occur in module structure and sequence in order to ensure that the qualification remains relevant. The exit level outcomes of the programme do not change. Registered students receive updated programme curriculum on an annual basis.

Semester 1 Management and Leadership International Business Management Semester 2 Sustainability and Social Responsibility Contemporary Management and Innovation Year module Research Module purpose The purpose of this module is to provide students with an indepth innovative exploration of leadership and management in business, focusing mainly on the interrelationship of leadership and management in business, with consideration to both the national and international environment. The purpose of this module is for students to analyse the global forces shaping international business considering the macro business environments of different regions and countries from a South African perspective. Broad issues such as globalisation, trade and investment and management in an international environment are considered through the development of analytical skills and ability to apply knowledge to aid international business strategy development. The purpose of this module is to instil in students an understanding that sustainable and responsible business practices are about management approaches and activities to enhance business performance, whilst at the same time, accelerating positive social change, and protecting and preserving environmental integrity through the motivation of staff, market growth, product and service differentiation and creation of new business opportunities, with transparency and accountability to stakeholders. The purpose of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary management theories, approaches and practices, including organisational behaviour and change. Students will gain insight and competency to lead management initiatives in business, and develop their skills, analytical tools and techniques in order to deal with contemporary management and innovation challenges. The purpose of this module is to develop students skills in research, critical analysis, and academic discourse in order for them to complete a self directed research project. Emphasis is placed on independent and critical thinking, analysis, research designs and methods, as well as academic discourse. This module will provide students with practical and applied experience in research from developing a proposal through to the completion of a research report during which the ultimate goal is to acquire essential research skills needed in both professional and academic contexts.
