Lesson 1: Introduction to Computer 1. Intro to computer class + Turning computer on and off: Objective: Turn computer on and off; different parts of computer. General overview of the computer class, and what they will learn in the course Remind them of the strict attendance policy. Once students learn about the power button, have them open the computer. They should learn how to log on and off the computer Username: student Password: computer. 2. Intro to parts of a computer: Pass out the Identifying computer parts handout and explain the functions of the different parts of a computer. Write the different parts of computer on the board and have them copy, so they can remember it. Students should be able to identify the monitor, tower or CPU, keyboard, keys, power button, printer, and mouse. Go over the different parts name and how to spell it a few times, before moving on. 3. Mouse Practice Help students open the mousercise page (http://www.pbclibrary.org/mousing/mousercise.htm)- If you search mousercise on google, it is the first link that comes up. They can go through the practice exercises on their own pace. Go around the room helping students and explaining functions that might be new.

Lesson 2: Review to parts of a computer Objective: Typing (will be practiced throughout the semester) Turning computer on and off Mouse practice Opening programs *Open mousercise on all the computers before class, so it doesn t take up class time to open them. 1. Mouse Practice They can go through the mousercise page on their own pace. (If you search mousercise on google, it is the first link that comes up.) Go around the room helping students and explaining functions that might be new. 2. Review parts of a computer Review parts of a computer. Help them to try to spell it by quizzing them. Review writing and spelling COMPUTER - so they can log in easily. 3. Introduction to the three main programs/ Opening Programs Show the students the three main programs we will be using in the class. Turbo Typing, Microsoft Office Word, and Mozilla Firefox for Internet. Go over them and help them remember which program is used for what. Help them understand that if you say internet, they have to open Mozilla firefox, if you say typing on your own, open Microsoft word, Typing practice, open turbo typing. Teach them how to open different programs. Two ways for students to open documents: o Double click. o Click on the icon and hit enter (This method is good for people who have trouble double clicking) 4. If time Students can practice typing on Turbo Typing if there is more time.

Introduction and practice mousercise Lesson 3: Mouse and Keyboard Objective: Mouse functions (Point, click, double-click, highlight, drag, and scroll up/down, arrow up/down) Intro to keys: backspace, space, shift, enter, and period. Hand out copies of the mouse handout (found in the handout section) and explain the basic function of the mouse. You can do mouse practice, if you think some students still need it. (If you search mousercise on google, it is the first link that comes up.) Go around the room helping students and explaining functions that might be new. 2. Keyboard Give the functions of the main keys on the keyboard. The important keys are: backspace, space, enter, number keys, shift, and period key. You can do activities that will help them remember the keys, such as making them spell it on the board. Making them point to the keys as you say it. Once they have a basic understanding, pass out the handouts. Giving the handouts last will make them focus before and not distract them. 3. Introduction to the three main programs/ Opening Programs Show the students the three main programs we will be using in the class. Turbo Typing, Microsoft Office Word, and Mozilla Firefox for Internet. Go over them and help them remember and respond to your instructions. Help them understand that if you say internet, they have to open Mozilla firefox, if you say typing on your own, open Microsoft word, Typing practice, open turbo typing. Lesson 4: Intro to Computer Objective: Launch and quit application Use of basic keys Recognizing the important programs. 1. Typing Students open Turbo Typing and start practicing typing. Teacher walks around the room, helping the students as needed and monitoring their progress. **Turbo Typing should be done usually only for 10-15 mins 2. Introduction to terms Introduce and describe important terms or buttons such as desktop, start button. Describe and show folders such as computer, trash etc. Instructor can use the powerpoint The Desktop if they want to use it. They can use the projector to show the items on the laptop, or the instructor can make and use handouts if they want to. 3. Introduction to the three main programs/ Opening Programs Show the students the three main programs we will be using in the class. Turbo Typing, Microsoft Office Word, and Mozilla Firefox for Internet. Go over them and help them remember and respond to your instructions. Review Lesson 5: Highlighting, font size, font style Objective: Opening a new document One space between words Changing font style, size and using B, I, U Review the three main programs: Turbo Typing, Microsoft Word, and Mozilla Firefox Review the following keys and their function: space, backspace, enter, period, shift. 2. Typing Practice Dictate the following story, and have the students type it in Microsoft Word.. It helps if you write it on the board while dictating it. Some student will be slower and will not type everything correctly. This is fine. Just have them do the best they can. Story This is Jim. He lives in Minneapolis. He is married and has two children. He works as a chef in a restaurant. He loves his job. His mother and father live in Texas with his older brother. 3. Selecting, font size Demonstrate how to select a word, or a text. It helps if you gather them around your computer and demonstrate it a few times. Make the instructions as simple as possible. Then demonstrate how to change the font size. Repeat the demonstration a few times. Have them go over to their computer and try it. Give very specific tasks such as: Select the word Minneapolis then increase the font size to 36. It is important to repeat and remind them that they have to: 1. Select 2. Click on the arrow 3. Select the number. Make sure you write the steps on the board. *Things to look out for and teach while dictation and typing 1. Spaces between words 2. Usage of period 3. Capitalizing some letters- especially with the advanced students.

Lesson 6: Review font size and other formatting options Skill Tackled: Changing font size Saving and Printing 1. Review changing Font size Pass out the handout Formatting in word and explain the functions of the different buttons. Students type something like: My name is. Today is Thursday, December 26. Review how to highlight a specific word or sentence. First demonstrate how to do it by having them observe you highlighting a few times. Make them practice by giving instructions to highlight other specific words. Next demonstrate how to change size of the word. Emphasize the fact that a bigger number makes the words bigger, and a smaller number makes it smaller. Briefly explain the function of Bold and underline, and italics. Make them practice changing styles and B, U, I. 2. Saving and Printing Next, teach them how to save the document. Explain that saving something in the computer is like saving things in your brain. You can start by saving in desktop, as it is easy to find. Finally, teach them how to print the document. Emphasize the importance of the little Window or the file button on the Microsoft word document that has important functions such as save, print, open, new, etc. 3. If time.. If there is time, and if the students are doing well with increasing font size, you can show them how to change color of text. Emphasize selecting, and then clicking on the ribbon by the letter A on the toolbar to get a list of colors. Have students practice practice practice!

Typing Practice Open Microsoft Word Dictate the following story, and have the students type it. It helps if you write it on the board as well as you dictate it. Some student will be slower and will not type everything you read correctly. This is fine. Just have them do the best they can. Story My name is Susan Gaer. I come from New York. I came to Minneapolis in 1996. I am single and I don't have any children. I have 5 brothers and sisters. 2. Review font size style, saving, and printing Make them highlight a particular word- New York. This might entail some review of highlighting from the lesson before. Then show them where the font size button is. Explain that a bigger number leads to a big size, and a small number leads to a small size. Instruct the students to make the selected word big, size 36. Then ask them to make it small again. Repeat and practice a few times. Have the students print the document.

Lesson 8: Intro to internet; Youtube Objective: Open and close Mozilla firefox Type and open websites. 2. Introduce internet Explain the uses and functions of the internet. Briefly describe how internet works. Demonstrate how to open and close Mozilla firefox 2. Opening youtube Show where to put the address in the page and demonstrate how to open a webpage. Use youtube as an example. Demonstrate how to open Mozilla firefox, where to type www.youtube.com and how to navigate the youtube page. *Emphasize the fact that there are no spaces while typing the web address, and that the typing has to be very accurate to get to the page. While on youtube search for English practice (Students love looking at English conversation videos) Have the students go to their computers and practice opening the page. 3. If time Once the students successfully navigate youtube and are able to open a video, show other functions in youtube such as: o adjusting the volume, o adjusting the screen size, o how to go forward and back in a video, o how to search for new things while looking at one video.

Lesson 9: Youtube and other websites Objectives: Open and successfully navigate youtube. 1. Re-introduce Mozilla Forefox Show the student Mozilla Firefox and what it looks like. Explain that we will use Moxilla Firefox for internet. 3. Review opening youtube Ask the students to open youtube and open any video. They can open English practice videos or other news or music video based on their interests. The point is that they can successfully navigate youtube. 3. If time... Move on to teaching them how to open other web addresses. Pass out the Web Addresses: Like a Sandwich handout and explain it. Demonstrate how to open a web browser and access a web page. Some students might have difficulty double clicking. Demonstrate/help students. Once everyone is on the web page, show students where the address window is located. Demonstrate how to change web addresses. You can do so by opening a new tab, or removing the current web address and entering a new. Try opening the websites for practice. Students often get confused where they need to put the website address, so repeat the process as much as possible. Some of the most useful websites are: www.youtube.com- mostly used for English Practice www.hiiraan.com- used to Somali news. www.cnn.com- news for non Somali people www.startribune.com- local news.

Lesson 10: google.com Objectives: Finding information on google 2. Finding information on google Explain what search engines are and what they can do. Name some of the big search engines such as google, ask, and yahoo. Write the web address www.google.com on the board and ask the students to open it. Demonstrate how to enter words into the search bar and tell them to enter something into the search bar (it can be anything!) Suggest things such as their home country, their name, a favorite singer, etc. The goal is for them to see the variety of things they can look up using a search engine. Demonstrate how they can also look for only pictures, or only maps. Hand out the www. google.com handout and let them answer the questions.

Lesson 11: Review youtube, google, news websites Objective: Review opening websites: youtube, google, news 1.Typing Students open Turbo Typing and start practicing typing. Teacher walks around the room, helping the students as needed and monitoring their progress. 2. Review opening and navigating youtube Ask the students to open youtube and open any video. They can open English practice videos or other news or music video based on their interests. The point is that they can successfully navigate youtube. 3. Review opening different websites Have students open different websites relating to learning English. Some of the websites are: o www.manythings.org o www.esl-lab.com o www.a4esl.org Walk around the room and help the students. 4. Opening websites Pass out the Computer resources for students handout. Explain to students that these are various useful websites. Tell students to look on the handout and practice opening various websites.

Lesson 12: Review formatting Word Objective: Review formatting Microsoft Word 1.Typing Students open Turbo Typing and start practicing typing. Teacher walks around the room, helping the students as needed and monitoring their progress. 1. Review Dictate the following story and have the students type it: Story Nancy was new to America. She did not speak English. She came with her son. She lived in a house in Minneapolis. She liked her house. Her son went to school. She bought a car. Ask the students to change the font size and style of some of the words. Ask them to practice using B, U, I. Ask them to practice changing font color if they learned how to do that in the previous week.

Objective: Practice filling online forms Lesson 13:Setting up gmail accounts Set up gmail account for everyone. 1. Filling out forms Find some online practice sheets for people to fill out as much as they can. You can also make some survey questions that students can fill out for practice. Explain how forms can be filled for different things, and how these are only practice forms and not particularly for anything. Also, they do not need to fill out the entire form, only the things they can understand and relates to them. 2. Introduction to gmail Explain the uses of having an email. Explain that gmail is one of the various email providers. Explain that they need a username and a password. Explain the meaning of username and password. 3. Set up an account for everyone Go around the room helping everyone set up their email account. Basic gmail overview. Make sure to ask the students to write down their email account and their password, and tell them how important it is to not forget your email account and password. You should write this information down on a piece of paper too. So if students lose them, you ll have a copy with you. It might be easier to enter their phone numbers as their password, it s easier to remember. 4. If time.. Depending on how much time it takes you to set up an account, you might or might not have time to do this part. If you have time, give them a basic introduction to the gmail. Explain the importance and functions of compose and inbox.

Lesson 14: Intro to gmail Objective: Logging in 1. Typing Overview of gmail Students open Turbo Typing and start practicing typing. Teacher walks around the room, helping the students as needed and monitoring their progress. 2. Review signing in Set up accounts for people who do not have it. Review terms such as gmail, signing in, signing out, email address, and password. Ask the students to sign in to their email (Remind them of www.gmail.com) Once signed in, explain the main function and button on the gmail. Make the students sign in multiple times. So, once they sign in, have them sign out and close Mozilla and try to sign in again. *There is an e-mail handout in the handout section giving an overview of the different functions and buttons in gmail. Go over the handout and show and explain all of the buttons. Key buttons: Inbox, reply, compose 3. Sending new message Demonstrate how to send a new message. Explain the importance of compose in doing so. Show the students where they need to write the email address and where the main message is written. Ask them to try to send an email to you. Ask them to try to send an email to each other. It might be a good exercise for them to ask the other student for the email address themselves. The main things students need to learn on gmail are: The functions of compose, inbox, reply, delete. Where to write the email of the person they are sending emails to vs. where to type the message. Send button.

Lesson 15: Sending, replying and deleting Objective: check, compose, reply, send emails 1. Practice sending email Understand how to use compose, address, subject. Ask the students to sign in to their email address. Emphasize the importance of memorizing your email address and password instead of looking for it every time they sign in. Ask the students to send email to each other. You can set up pairs and assign who they should send emails to. It might be a good exercise for them to ask the other student for the email address themselves. The students can write something such as: Hi! What is the day today? 2. Replying to emails Once the students receive emails. They should practice responding to it. Ask the students to reply to the email they just received. They can write back: Hi! Today is Tuesday, December 31. *If some students get done early, ask them to repeat this process for more practice. 3. Delete email Demonstrate how to delete emails. Ask the students to delete a few emails they do not need. Go around the room helping the students as needed. The main things students need to learn on gmail are: The functions of compose, inbox, reply, delete. Where to write the email of the person they are sending emails to vs. where to type the message. Send button.

Lesson 16: Email continued Objective: Practice sending and checking emails Opening websites *Before the class, send all the students an email, asking how they are doing. 1. Check email Ask the students to sign in and check their email. Ask them to reply to the email you recently sent them. Ask them to sign out once they are done. 2. Review youtube Ask students to open youtube and find a video to practice English. Review how to open a video if students need it. Ask them to continue practicing finding other videos on youtube. 3. Typing If there is plenty of time as students to open Turbo Typing and practice typing.

Lesson 17: Intro to cut, copy, paste Objective: Learn how to use cut, copy, paste Review save, print 1. Review google.com Ask the students to try to find the weather today. This will require some revision on finding information. Explain that if they ever need and want to find something, they should always go to google. 2. Introduction to Cut, copy, paste Explain the use of cut, copy, paste. Make sure you repeat these words and they understand the difference and the functions. Have students open Microsoft word. Ask them to write a few sentences such as: My name is. Today is Monday, December 30. It is cold and snowing today. Ask them to highlight a particular Demonstrate where the cut, copy, paste functions are located. It might be easier to pick to teach either the cut copy buttons on the home bar or the functions on the right click. Make students copy Monday a few times below the paragraph. Then, make them practice with cut. Make sure to give very specific instructions such as Select the word today. And right click, select cut. And paste it at the end of the paragraph. 3. Review Save, Print At the end, ask the students to save and print the document. The students might need some demonstration from you as to where the these functions are located. Stress on the importance of the Office Button on the top left corner as it has save, print, and other important functions. Go around the room and help the students print and save the document.

Lesson 18: Review cut, copy Objective: Review cut, copy 1. Typing on Microsoft and review cut, copy. Review things such as highlighting, right clicking, and using cut, copy, paste, to help students remember. Dictate the following to the students and help them type it. My name is. I live in. I was born in. I study at the. I was born in. Sarah Minneapolis 1982 English Learning Center. Somali Explain that the words in the bottom need to be in the story. They can practice using cut and paste to enter them into the story.

Lesson 19: Review email and cut, copy. Objective: Review checking email, and using copy, cut, and paste 1. Check email Ask the students to sign in and check their email. Ask them to reply to the email you recently sent them. Ask them to sign out once they are done. 2. Review Copy, cut, paste Remind them of the copy, cut, paste functions and explain that we will be reviewing these functions some more. There are a few worksheets on the computer folder in elc drive that you can use to make the students practice or you can use your own new practice materials. *Make sure to put the practice worksheets on each of the computer in the computer lab.

Objective: Review gmail, google Lesson 21: Review email, google 1. Review gmail Sign in to Gmail Ask them to type test in the subject and write: Hi.. My name is and whatever they want to in the main body. Ask them to sign out of gmail. Ask them to sign in again and send all their classmates an email 2. Review google Ask them to google search and find the answers to the following questions: i. What is the tallest building in the world? ii. How many people live in Minneapolis iii. What is the address of the White House? *Ask them to copy and paste the answers in a word document.

Lesson 22: Student stories on Word Objective: Practice searching in google and using Microsoft word 1. Typing Students open Turbo Typing and start practicing typing. Teacher walks around the room, helping the students as needed and monitoring their progress. 2. Review searching in google: Ask students to search for pictures of Minneapolis Ask students to search for pictures of famous people. You can ask if they have a favorite singer and ask them to search for him/her. Practice copying and pasting the pictures in Microsoft Word. They can also practice printing.
