Students participate in Christmas for Kids event Last week, a group of elementary counselors, school psychologist and building secretaries escorted around 20 Centennial students to the Christmas for Kids event at the Hollywood Fred Meyer store. Christmas for Kids is a magical event where local kids, hand-selected by their school counselors due to extreme need, join volunteer shoppers to check off a Christmas list mostly comprised of basic clothing needs for the child and their immediate siblings. Students received donated items from Columbia Sportswear and other local businesses (coats, socks, books, hygiene items, etc.), as well as a $300 Fred Meyer gift card to shop for themselves and their family. CHS students place at North Clackamas Edge Speech Tournament Congratulations to the following CHS Speech students on placing at the North Clackamas Edge Speech Tournament, one of the state s largest high school speech tournaments, on December 2: Freshman Shelbey Colt, Second Place, Novice Expository Senior Alex Vega, Third Place, Novice Humorous Interpretation Sophomore Tabarek Al Saood finaled in Literary Interpretation of English Language Junior Haoyuan Xiao, Third Place, Literary Interpretation of English Language Junior Miki Moua finaled in Open Expository. Centennial Park School receives grant Congratulations to Centennial Park School on receiving a $5000 Teaching Tolerance Educator Grant. The school will use the money to develop and implement an
integrated unit about the local community. The grants are made possible by donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Local Les Schwab stores donate toys for Parklane families Thank you to the Les Schwab Tire Centers on SE 122 nd and SE 166 th and Division for dropping off bags of donated toys to Parklane Elementary School for families in need. Time to sign up for the Centennial Shamrock Run Team Looking for that perfect gift idea? What better than a race registration? It is time to register for the 2018 Shamrock Run Centenni al Team. Centennial is one of the longest running teams in the event! This year, teams are just by name - we are no longer 1010. SHAMROCK is running a December contest: the team with the most entries wins a scarf. The Shamrock Run is Sunday, March 18, 2018. This year is the run s 40th anniversary. The deadline for teams is January 31 at midnight You can run any distance--5k run or stride, 8K, 15K or Half Marathon Running on a team does not mean we have to run together. Centennial staff and students offered access to adidas Employee Store The adidas Employee Store has allowed us to gain access for students, parents and staff members into the employee store by invitation only (see attached flyer for details.) friends and family are invited as well, if accompanied by an employee/student. This invitation is valid through Wednesday, December 20, 2017. As a staff member you will be required to show your District Photo ID or a current paycheck stub; students will be required to provide their most current (Winter 2017) report card or current 2017-2018 Student ID. CHS graduate wins prestigious Marshall Scholarship Congratulations to Sandra Dorning, CHS Class of 2013 and daughter of CHS employee Trish Dorning, on winning the prestigious Marshall Scholarship! Dorning graduated from the University of Oregon last spring with a degree in marine biology. Her journey with the ocean will continue next fall when she crosses it to attend graduate school in the United Kingdom. She is a winner of the highly selective Marshall Scholarship. Each year, the Marshall Scholarship offers up to 40 young Americans the opportunity to pursue graduate degrees for free at any university in the U.K. In the 2016 competition, only 3.5 percent of applicants were selected, and 25 percent of them were Ivy League graduates. Nora Gene Watts was born Tuesday and weighed 9 lbs 8 oz and is 21 inches long. Photos from Around the District Last week Centennial High School celebrated Sprit Week.
