Work programs allow for the characteristics of a school and its students to be considered when implementing the syllabus. School work programs must demonstrate that syllabus dimensions and objectives inform student learning. Focus Suggested subject matter Possible learning experiences Underpinning practices Management practices Involves business structures, the impact of internal or external environments on businesses, and the roles of business managers who plan, organise and lead businesses. Strategic management includes the analysis of marketing, operations, finance and human resources to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources. Production efficiency and the creation of profit are primary goals of business managers but they are not the only criteria of business success. Business managers Work in teams to analyse a number of small business case studies, both nonprofit and profit driven, to describe the primary goals of the identified businesses. Using this information, explain key performance indicators that the businesses may use to measure the achievement of these business goals. Identify what the goals are for the school. Conduct a whole class interview with the principal to determine the goals. Describe what strategies the school has in place in order to work towards achieving these goals. Conduct a roleplay to demonstrate: the main goal of business is to make a profit. Based on a local business, identify internal and external stakeholders and present in a graphic organiser. consider the views of all stakeholders within the internal and external environment as they make decisions in order to achieve business goals and objectives. stakeholders and consider which stakeholder would be the most challenging to satisfy. Analyse case studies to examine whether the demands of stakeholders have been addressed. Also analyse the business information to identify issues in the business situation. Based on this evidence, make justified recommendations to ensure all stakeholders needs are met. Present this information in a report in a suitable electronic format. Effective marketing is a competitive advantage that business managers use to achieve objectives. The marketing mix is a generally accepted set of marketing variables which include: - product - place - price - promotion. Marketing planning is a systematic way of assessing marketing opportunities and determining marketing strategies. Work effectively with others to participate in a field excursion to a superstore giant in the local area and to select and organise business information from primary sources. Apply knowledge collected from the field excursion to analyse the business information and determine the competitive advantage of the superstore giant. Work in teams to research and negotiate common marketing objectives of the relevant superstore giant. Conduct a survey to determine the needs and wants of a sample of students at your school. Graphically display the results. Work effectively in pairs to research new product ideas from a selected website. Evaluate the product (e.g. design, functionality etc.) and display this information on a graphic organiser. Communicate your findings using a persuasive speech to the class about how to sell the new product idea. Collect, select and organise a variety of promotional strategies that can be found in a range of advertising mediums (e.g. magazines, newspaper etc.). Analyse the information and interpret trends in patterns, in the promotional strategies identified. Display this information on a poster. Critically analyse the effectiveness one of the promotional strategies previously identified. Create a comparison table to illustrate different businesses which use different pricing strategies for their products. In the table explain the advantages and disadvantages of each pricing strategy. Working in pairs, obtain a geographical map of the local area and use icons to illustrate effective areas to place a business based on its needs (e.g. highways, waste facilities etc.). Write paragraphs using appropriate communication conventions to make fully justified recommendations as to what type of businesses would best suit the different locations displayed on the map. Select a business in the local area and conduct a SWOT analysis (identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities & threats) to analyse potential marketing opportunities. Based on the results of the SWOT analysis, make appropriate justified recommendations to increase the businesses success. Evaluate what effect this might have on different stakeholders. Actively listen to a guest speaker such as the school marketing manager. Discuss the school s marketing mix, strategies implemented to maximise opportunities for all stakeholders, challenges or issues. Financial management involves sourcing and managing the risks of finance. Finance managers develop investment strategies based on the evaluation of financial risk in order to meet business goals. Analyse case studies to examine and apply different methods of sourcing funds for establishing and/or expanding a business. Conduct internet research on businesses which have experienced financial misfortunes and select and organize the information collected. Analyse the economy in the local area and identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the economic climate. Based on this research, make justified recommendations about financial management strategies to ensure business goals are met. Respond in essay format. Conduct an organised debate with peers as to whether debt or equity financing is the most appropriate way to fund business opportunities. Entrepreneurial ideas come to fruition through the development of clear business feasibility studies. Analysing and comparing competitors are useful techniques for formulating recommendations for a proposed business. An analysis of the business proposal provides a test of feasibility and viability of the proposed business allowing decisions for future action to be made. Business proposals consist of a business profile, competition analysis, recommendations and an evaluation of the proposal to determine the viability of the proposed business idea. Research a successful entrepreneur and create a fact file displaying the chosen entrepreneur s characteristics. Based on these characteristics evaluate the reasons for the entrepreneur s success. Conduct an organised debate in class to explain what you consider to be the most important characteristic of an entrepreneur. Ensure peers actively listen to others and speak persuasively about their opinions, during the debate. Analyse the competition for the school in the local area. Createa competition analysis table (or smart art) outlining relevant information. Based on the research and ideas, make decisions and justified recommendations about how the school can stay ahead of the competition. Display justified recommendations in a suitable format to be communicated at the next school council meeting.
