Math Bt Camp Summer 2011: Fllw-up Reprt Research Reprt Prepared by: Office f Institutinal Research and Planning Quinsigamnd Cmmunity Cllege March 7, 2012

Math Bt Camps: Summer 2011 and subsequent student success Backgrund: The fllwing study was requested by math faculty members at Quinsigamnd Cmmunity Cllege t prvide infrmatin tracking students prgress and success in their math curses after participatin in a summer math bt camp. Subsequent fall and spring enrllment data fr math curses are presented in this reprt. Fall final grades and final exam grades are als presented in this reprt. Spring final grades and final exam results are nt presented in this reprt because they are nt available at this time. In the summer f 2011, faculty at Quinsigamnd Cmmunity Cllege cnducted six Math Bt Camps (MBC) with a gal t accelerate the pace at which students travel thught their develpmental math curse sequence n their way t cllege level math. The MBCs are an accelerated, cncentrated review f the cllege s lwest level f develpmental math curse: MAT 090 Basic mathematics. All students wh participate in the MBC have initially placed int MAT 090 via their Accuplacer placement exam. Students attend the MBCs fr a perid f ne week (4 hurs a day). At the cmpletin f the MBC, the students re-take the Accuplacer placement exam t place int their apprpriate level f Math. Data fr student enrllment in MBC and students Accuplacer scres upn cmpletin f the MBC was prvided by Aemir Beyene 1. The riginal list prvided cntained at ttal f 120 unduplicated recrds. Sme recrds were remved because: (1) the student ID recrd was nt available (2) Accuplacer results were listed as nt in system (3) Accuplacer results were listed as see advisr (4) Accuplacer results were listed as belw MAT 090 (5) Incnsistencies between Accuplacer results and enrllment in a math curse level. 2 After remval f thse recrds, a ttal f 86 recrds remained and thus this clean file will serve as the data fr which this reprt is based upn. 1 Enrllment data fr math bt camps were nt recrded in CX, therefre the data was prvided by Aemir via a list f names and Accuplacer exit exams t be used in this reprt. 2 One student (ID#204742) placed int MAT 090 based n Accuplacer, but enrlled in MAT 099. Upn further examinatin prvided by a Cgns reprt, it was fund that this student tk the Accuplacer 3 times: June 2010 placed int MAT 090, August 2010 placed int MAT 099, August 2011 the Cgns recrd is blank fr placement but it was listed as MAT 090 n data prvided by Aemeri.

Accuplacer Exit Exam results: Summary f findings (N=86) 74% f MBC cmpleters place higher than MAT 090 n their Accuplacer exam 26% f MBC cmpleters placed int MAT 090 n their Accuplacer exam 43% f MBC cmpleters placed int MAT 095 n their Accuplacer exam 23% f MBC cmpleters placed int MAT 099 n their Accuplacer exam 8% f MBC cmpleters placed int MAT 100 +n their Accuplacer exam Subsequent enrllment and student success patterns: 71% f all the MBC cmpleters enrlled in a math curse fr fall 2011 14% f all the MBC cmpleters enrlled in MAT 090 fr fall 2011 34% f all the MBC cmpleters enrlled in either MAT 095 r 098 fr fall 2011 17% f all the MBC cmpleters enrlled in MAT 099 fr fall 2011 6% f all the MBC cmpleters enrlled in a cllege level Math curse (MAT 100 r higher) fr fall 2011 29% f all the MBC cmpleters did nt enrlled in a math curse fr fall 2011 (25 students) 40% 3 f thse wh cmpleted the bt camps but did nt enrll in a math curse in the fall 2011 tested int the lwest level f develpmental math (MAT 090) 32% 4 f thse wh cmpleted the bt camps but did nt enrll in a math curse in the fall 2011 tested int ne level higher than where they entered: (MAT 095) 20% 5 f thse wh cmpleted the bt camps but did nt enrll in a math curse in the fall 2011 tested int the highest level f develpmental math (MAT 099) 8% 6 f thse wh cmpleted the bt camps but did nt enrll in a math curse in the fall 2011 tested int the a cllege level math curse 3 10/25=40% This is the prprtin (40%) f the grup that did nt enrll in a math curse fr fall 2011. Findings I. Accuplacer (exit exam) results Despite the fact that all f the bt camp participants tested int the lwest level f develpmental math (MAT 090) prir t the weeklng math bt camp, the majrity (74%) f math bt camp cmpleters successfully tested int MAT 095 r higher at the cmpletin f the ne week sessin. This advancement nt nly saved these students time f nt having t take MAT 090 fr the Fall semester but it als saves them mney that wuld have gne tward tuitin fr MAT 090. Almst a third (31%) f thse that cmpleted the bt camp bypassed 2 (r mre) semesters f develpmental math, a significant pay-ff fr a week s wrth f intensive wrk. (See Table 1 fr mre detailed infrmatin). II. Fall 2011 enrllment Mst (71%) f the students wh cmpleted the summer math bt camp enrlled in a math curse at QCC fr the fall 2011 semester. There was a higher enrllment rate fr thse students wh advanced at least ne level (71%-78%) when cmpared t their peers wh remained at the MAT 090 level (54%) at the cmpletin f the bt camp. The grup with the highest enrllment rate (78%) was thse students wh advanced ne level t MAT 095 after the cmpletin f the bt camp. Nt surprisingly, the grup wh had the highest percentage f students wh did nt enrll in fall 2011 was the grup that failed t advance a math level at the cmpletin f the bt camp. Frty five percent (45%) f students wh did nt advance a math level n their Accuplacer pst test did nt enrll in a math curse fr the fall semester. Additinally, a majrity f MBC cmpleters successfully passed their departmental final exams (64%-83%). Three furths (75%) f all math bt camp cmpleters wh tested int and enrlled in MAT 090 fr the fall semester were eligible t advance t the next level f the develpmental math curse sequence (MAT 095) fr the spring semester. (See Table 3 fr mre details.)

IV. Persistence/advancement rates A. Overall Persistence Rates (Persistence measured frm MBC cmpletin t Spring 2012, takes int accunt the entire sample (N=86)): Apprximately half (51%) f all students wh cmpleted the summer math bt camp were still enrlled in a math curse at QCC fr Spring 2012. The highest persistence rate (57%) fr the spring semester was fund in thse students wh tested int Cllege level math after the bt camp. The lwest persistence rate (45%) belnged t the grup f students that that failed t advance a math level at the cmpletin f the bt camp (MAT 090). Slightly ver half (54%) f the grup that riginally advanced ne level t MAT 095 after the cmpletin f the bt camp was still enrlled in a math curse in Spring 2012. Less than half, (43%) f thse wh tested int MAT 095 at the end f the bt camp enrlled in their last develpmental math sequence curse (MAT 099) fr the spring 2012 semester.
