Information for Prospective International Students New Mexico Junior College Admission Requirements and Application Procedures Admission Requirements Secondary Education Applicants must have completed the equivalent of an American upper secondary school education (approximately twelve years of formal education beginning at age six) and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations. Academic Preparation The applicant s educational background must be sufficiently strong to indicate high probability of academic success at New Mexico Junior College. English Proficiency If English is not the applicant s first language, or if English is not the official language spoken in your country, the applicant must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 500 on the paper test, 173 on the computerized version, 72 on the internet-based test with a minimum score of 18 on each section on the International version. Financial Resources All international applicants are required to submit documentation verifying adequate funding to meet study and living expenses while in the United States. Proof of support includes Certification of Financial Responsibility Form completed and proof of funds available for the first year of study. Physician s Statement A physician's statement showing proof of immunization against diphtheria and tetanus within the last ten (10) years, a negative result on a tuberculosis test, and evidence of good physical and mental health is required. Health Insurance International students who attend NMJC and any dependents who may accompany them are required to have medical insurance. Application Deadlines May 1: Fall Semester (August) September 1: Spring Semester (January) February 1: Summer Session (June) Applications and all supporting credentials must be submitted by these dates. Only complete applications will be reviewed for admission. All academic records and supporting documents must be official. Required Documents 1. Completed application form 2. Application Procedure 1. Application Form Complete and sign the application. Use the list of degree programs to help you enter your intended major. 2. English Proficiency Proof of proficiency in the English language is required for enrollment into academic programs. The following may be used as proof of proficiency: Official transcripts reflecting graduation from a US high school. Official transcripts from an accredited US college or university showing completion of 12 semester credit hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Official report on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 (paper-based), or 173 (computerized), or 72 (Internet) with a minimum score of 18 on each section on the International version. Academic Records We require official copies of high school, secondary, and university transcripts. Start by having your transcript evaluated by a credentials evaluation agency, such as the World Education Service (www.wes.org). We will waive the WES requirement if your official transcripts are in English from an accredited school and on a fourpoint scale. 4. Financial Documents Complete and return the NMJC Certification of Financial Responsibility Form along with required supporting documentation. 5. Physician s Statement 6. Health Insurance Applications received after the deadline date will be considered for admission for the next semester. International students who wish to transfer to New Mexico Junior College from another accredited U.S. college or university must have the New Mexico Junior College International Student SEVIS Transfer Form completed by the international advisor from the previously attended institution prior to admission. International students who are interested in online classes and are not planning to come to the United States should contact admissions for requirements. PLEASE NOTE: I-20 Statement The Immigration Form I-20 is valid up to the first day of class for the semester or summer session to which you are admitted. If you are not able to attend, you must immediately return the I-20 form to NMJC Admissions & Records. Student visa information is available at http://www.educationusa.state.gov/usvisa.htm. * If you want any information concerning your applicant file released to any third party, you must submit a letter of authorization directly to the International Admissions Office. New Mexico Junior College Certification of Financial Responsibility This form is valid during your course of study. This form is not an application for admission, but it is required supplementary information. A form I-20 (for the issuance of the F-1 visa) cannot be issued to you until you have been admitted to New Mexico Junior College AND have completed this form to our satisfaction. We require you to certify that you will have the estimated sum to cover the expense for each and every year of study at New Mexico Junior College exclusive of travel expenses. In computing your expenses, you should bear in mind that students holding Student (F-1) visas are authorized to work only under limited circumstances. Therefore, the applicant should not look for employment as a means of support while at NMJC. Under no circumstance are students permitted to work full-time during the academic year. If you are an applicant and plan to bring a spouse and children, a proportionately larger amount must be certified on the basis of at least an additional $5,000 per academic year for your spouse and $2,500 for each child. Spouses of F-1 student visa holders are not permitted to work under any circumstances.

Sources of Funds Required Verification Personal/Family Savings Signatures of sponsors are required on this form. Also required is a bank verification in a separate statement of account. The bank verification must be an original and must demonstrate the funds already available (in U.S. dollars) for the first year of study. Investment portfolios, mortgage appraisals, and similar statements are not acceptable. Scholarship Government Loans An official scholarship award letter is required from the institution awarding the scholarship. The award letter must contain: Name of applicant Amount of money available (in U.S. dollars) for each year of study Duration of the award (including beginning and ending dates) Requirements of the award Name of New Mexico Junior College as the institution to which the award is applicable An official letter indicating the amount of support and containing the same information as for Scholarship described above is required. An official letter from credit institution indicating approval of the loan and the amount approved (In U.S. dollars) is required. You are likely to need documentation to prove to the United States Consular and USCIS officials, upon entry to the U.S., that you have sufficient funds. We suggest you request additional sets of originals of your financial documents for this purpose.
