Information for Prospective International Students New Mexico Junior College Admission Requirements and Application Procedures Admission Requirements Secondary Education Applicants must have completed the equivalent of an American upper secondary school education (approximately twelve years of formal education beginning at age six) and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations. Academic Preparation The applicant s educational background must be sufficiently strong to indicate high probability of academic success at New Mexico Junior College. English Proficiency If English is not the applicant s first language, or if English is not the official language spoken in your country, the applicant must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 500 on the paper test, 173 on the computerized version, 72 on the internet-based test with a minimum score of 18 on each section on the International version. Financial Resources All international applicants are required to submit documentation verifying adequate funding to meet study and living expenses while in the United States. Proof of support includes Certification of Financial Responsibility Form completed and proof of funds available for the first year of study. Physician s Statement A physician's statement showing proof of immunization against diphtheria and tetanus within the last ten (10) years, a negative result on a tuberculosis test, and evidence of good physical and mental health is required. Health Insurance International students who attend NMJC and any dependents who may accompany them are required to have medical insurance. Application Procedure 1. Application Form Complete and sign the application. Use the list of degree programs to help you enter your intended major. 2. English Proficiency Proof of proficiency in the English language is required for enrollment into academic programs. The following may be used as proof of proficiency: Official transcripts reflecting graduation from a US high school. Official transcripts from an accredited US college or university showing completion of 12 semester credit hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Official report on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 (paper-based), or 173 (computerized), or 72 (Internet) with a minimum score of 18 on each section on the International version. Start by having your transcript evaluated by a credentials evaluation agency, such as the World Education Service (www.wes.org). We will waive the WES requirement if your official transcripts are in English from an accredited school and on a fourpoint scale. 4. International students who wish to transfer to New Mexico Junior College from another accredited U.S. college or university must have the New Mexico Junior College International Student SEVIS Transfer Form completed by the international advisor from the previously attended institution prior to admission. International students who are interested in online classes and are not planning to come to the United States should contact admissions for requirements.
