(Right) The Chicago State University Data Center fosters student innovation and provides an experiential curriculum. The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest at CSU with over 2,400 students, 160 full-time faculty members, 180 part-time faculty members, and over 80 staff members. Considered to be the intellectual nucleus of the University, the College serves every undergraduate student and many graduate students. Home to the humanities, visual and performing arts, social and behavioral sciences as well as the STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines of life, the College of Arts & Sciences offers majors, minors, and core requirements to prepare students for advanced studies and professional careers. Students are exposed to an array of hands-on learning opportunities to enrich their academic and personal lives. Towards this end, our programs foster an environment that encourages interdisciplinary exchange, educational innovation, research and leadership.

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY Interdisciplinary Exchange A broad base in a variety of academic disciplines provides the solid foundation necessary for students to effectively adapt to the ever-evolving world. We recognize that there are many combinations of courses to meet the needs of our diverse student body. Topics, resources and classroom practices within the College equip students with a multidimensional experience. Students have the opportunity to study across disciplines and access skills that makes them strong candidates when preparing for graduate school or entering the workforce. Educational Innovation We recognize that effective teaching involves being aware of different types of instructional materials and also being aware of student strengths and weaknesses. We ve implemented innovations in our learning environments and curriculum based on assessments and research in order to improve on teaching outcomes and courses each semester. Our hybrid classes offer students the flexibility of learning online and in the classroom throughout the semester. Interactive learning environments have also proven to be beneficial. State-of-the-art smart classrooms such as our multi-million dollar physics labs encourage group collaboration and active learning. Research has shown that an active learning environment lends itself to better retention of material and conceptual understanding of the subject matter. Research Nearly every discipline in the College of Arts and Sciences offers students robust independent studies and research opportunities to pursue interest areas under the tutelage of a faculty member through our facilities, internships and collaborations with other organizations. The value of a student's attained research experience requires solid research principles and practices, which benefits a professional relationship between the student and the faculty mentor process. Current research is integrated with teaching throughout the curriculum and provides a supportive and focused research and training environment. This process allows a student to build upon the knowledge gained in the classroom in a manner that fosters independence and self-confidence, sharpens critical thinking and communication skills, and provides an important vantage point from which to gauge the merits of a given career path. Students who do take advantage of independent studies and research opportunities are well-prepared for their future as these are used to form the framework for advanced graduate study. Leadership Students are afforded multifaceted opportunities to take the lead on many projects within the College of Arts & Sciences. These projects range from co-authoring award-winning research to overseeing operations at the campus radio and television studio. As a result, students are prepared to be leaders locally, nationally and globally. Our students are also encouraged to gain experience through participation in one of our many student clubs and organizations including: Chemistry Club Ecological Society Pre-Law Association Foreign Language Organization Broadcast Education Association Alumni Profile Patrice Bounds, Class of 2004 and 2007 Visiting Assistant Professor, DePaul University The decision to attend Chicago State University was an easy one for Patrice Bounds. Having attended classes with her older sister as a child, Patrice had an opportunity to experience campus life at a very early age and was determined to follow in her sister s footsteps by graduating from CSU. Patrice was so certain that she would become an alumna of her sister s alma mater. It was the only university she applied to while in high school. I was confident that CSU was the place for me. Patrice s expectations were exceeded upon enrolling. The education I received at CSU was like no other. I had instructors who cared about my academic progress and challenged me to the fullest to ensure that I succeeded. I also had great mentors that helped push me along the way. I have gained lifelong friendships from my days as a student and impeccable professional support from faculty and staff in the College of Arts & Sciences, particularly the Psychology and Criminal Justice departments. As a two-time graduate of Chicago State University, Patrice continues to defy the odds as a native of Chicago. According to statistics, I should probably not have graduated from high school, let alone go on to earn a bachelor s, masters, and doctorate degree. With hard work, dedication, and support, all of your academic and professional goals can be achieved. Chicago State University is a great place to start that endeavor. Patrice not only credits CSU with preparing her with the necessary training, support and education to face the academic challenges one faces when pursing a doctorate degree but also instilling in her a love for teaching in higher education. As I look back over the past 13 years at the various roles I ve had (student, research assistant, academic advisor, and instructor) CSU was more than just a university or job, it had become and still remains a part of my family.
