Administrative History E. Bruce Kirkham, professor of English at Ball State, conceived and started the Friends group when the Alexander M. Bracken Library opened in 1975. At a luncheon on the March 26, 1976 dedication day, it was formally decided that a Friends group should be formed, for the new library. On May 14, 1977, he and a small group met in the Forum Room of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center and officially launched The Friends of the Alexander M. Bracken Library. The first Board of Governors consisted of a mix of Friends from the University community as well as the Muncie and Delaware County community, a tradition that continues today. Vice President Burkhardt was appointed President of the Board, and Professor Kirkham was appointed Executive Secretary. The Friends generate financial support, research materials, ideas and goodwill that helps to advance the Ball State University Libraries in its mission to serve students, faculty, and community as a destination for research, learning and friends. Scope and Contents This collection includes newsletters, published lectures, and brochures from The Friends of the Alexander M.
