Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program Students interested in a career as a physician are invited to apply for admission to the New Mexico State University Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine* Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program. (*Disclaimer: The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University is a freestanding, privately funded, separately licensed and independently operated entity, and is not a part of New Mexico State University) This program presents a unique opportunity for students who are committed to serving their community s healthcare needs. Students will be admitted to the program as New Mexico State University (NMSU) freshman, and the Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program (OMPP) will provide opportunities for frequent and substantial interactions with the Southern New Mexico healthcare community, including faculty and staff from Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM). OMPP students will learn from professionals working and teaching in the healthcare field through seminars, research opportunities and internship positions. As undergraduates, students will enjoy a supportive and enriched learning environment. Students who are part of this pathway will: Work with a supportive mentor who will assist in the transition to college Participate in a Living Learning Community (LLC) as freshmen with programming relevant to aspiring physicians. As freshman, OMPP students will reside in NMSU housing designated for the OMPP. Interact with physicians and educators from BCOM and other members of the southern New Mexico healthcare community. In addition, NMSU will assist students in applying for federal, state, and private financial aid. 1

Application Process This program is open to incoming freshman students who meet admissions requirements for NMSU and who have a composite ACT score of 23 or greater (or SAT 1060 or higher) with an unweighted high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or greater. Additionally, students must: Complete an NMSU application prior to December 15 th, 2017. Complete and submit a supplemental Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program application by the December 15 th, 2017 deadline. The supplemental application will include: o The Supplemental Application Form o 3 letters of recommendation. One must be from one of your science or math teachers. Another must be from a non-relative who works with a program you have volunteered with, demonstrating your community involvement. A third letter must come from a non-relative, and can include a HS counselor, coach, band director, teacher, minister or employer. o A typed Personal Statement (no longer than two pages double-spaced) If invited, participate in an interview on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces in February. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty and staff from both NMSU and BCOM. In early February, top candidates will be invited to an on-campus interview, and successful applicants will be notified in March of their admission. Students accepted into the program will be regular NMSU students subject to all of NMSU s rules and regulations. 2

Admission to The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Upon successful completion of this program, students will earn a baccalaureate degree of their choosing from NMSU and earn guaranteed admission to BCOM. For admission to BCOM upon completion of the OMPP, pathway students must: Take all undergraduate courses required for entry in BCOM and earn a grade of B or higher in those courses. Participate in the LLC as first-year students at NMSU and complete the dedicated UNIV 150 course associated with the LLC. Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 and complete at least 15 credits per semester on the main campus of NMSU Earn a score in the 50 th percentile or higher on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) Participate in all activities associated with the program unless excused from the activity by the Director of the Program By December 15 th of the year prior to expected enrollment at BCOM, sign a letter of commitment to attend BCOM in the academic term following graduation. 3

NMSU-BCOM Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program Application Instructions The NMSU-BCOM Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program is designed to provide student interested in a medical career with a pathway that will allow them to go from a baccalaureate program to a doctor of osteopathic medicine program. The goal of the OMPP is to increase the number of healthcare providers in New Mexico who are committed to serving the healthcare needs of our diverse population. Students selected will complete undergraduate coursework at NMSU. Deadline: December 15 th, 2017 Eligibility Requirements This program is open to all high school seniors who meet the following criteria: Apply for admission and meet admission requirements for the NMSU Las Cruces campus by December 15 th, 2017 Have a composite ACT score of 23 or greater, or an SAT score of 1060 or above. Earned an unweighted high school grade point average (GPA) or 3.5 or higher. Complete and submit the supplemental OMPP application Submit your completed application packet (as one complete packet) to NMSU. Application Packet Checklist Please take the time to read all instructions carefully. The items listed below are required for application to the 2017 NMSU-BCOM Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program. Failure to include any of the materials will result in disqualification of your application. Check the boxes beside each item to help you complete your application. Completed Supplemental Application Form The application form contains important information about you and your family. You will need your parents' or guardian's help to complete the application form. Do not leave blanks. Incomplete forms will result in disqualification of your application. In addition to this application form, you must also include the items listed below for application to the NMSU-BCOM OMPP. Failure to include any of the application materials or leaving blank sections on the application will result in disqualification of your application. Personal Essay Submit a typed personal essay, no longer than two-pages, double-spaced, in 12-point font, describing your academic and professional goals, and how they relate to the profession of osteopathic medicine. 3 Recommendations Submit three completed recommendations, consisting of a letter and form in a sealed envelope. One recommendation must be completed by a science or math teacher who knows your character and academic performance well. Another recommendation must be completed by a non-relative who works with a program you have volunteered with, which demonstrates your community involvement. The third recommendation must come from a non-relative, and can include a high school counselor, coach, band director, teacher, minister or employer. The recommender who is completing the form must seal the form in an envelope and write his or her name across the seal on the back of the envelope. Your application will be disqualified if there is no signature or if the seal is broken. Transcripts The OMPP requires official copies of transcripts from all high schools you have attended. Also include official transcripts for any college or dual credit courses you have taken. Include the transcripts together with all other application materials. ACT/SAT Scores Include a copy of your exam score(s) if these are not included on your high school transcript. 5
