Ta l b o t S c h o o l o f Theology Ph.D. and Ed.D. Programs in Educational Studies BIOLA UNIVERSITY Doctoral Study in Christian Education

Pursue Wisdom Get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight. -Proverbs 4:7b If leaders and teachers in educational ministry are to advance the cause of Christ, they must be always in search of wisdom. At Talbot School of Theology, biblical wisdom is our doctoral programs central pursuit. Our programs equip students with the knowledge and skills to more effectively address the challenges of educational leadership and ministry in the world today. I have appreciated the research-practioner aspect of the program. I have grown immensely in my research capacities, critical thinking, and writing skills. I also have grown in my practical abilities to leverage my education to be more effective within my vocation and in the lives of people. I would not hesitate a moment to choose the Talbot Education Studies program again. Rob Rhea Ph.D. Candidate, Chaplain & Director, Student Ministries Depart., Trinity Western University 1 2

Since 1984, more than 140 doctoral graduates from our programs have benefited from the world-class educational studies training they received at Talbot School of Theology. They have gone on to impact the world for Christ through a variety of educational leadership roles in more than 20 countries. Impact the World for Christ What sets Talbot s doctoral programs apart? The Fostering of Christian and Critical Thinking. We are committed to the integration of social science research and theory within a Christian worldview. Theological reflection and integration are central to our programs, as we encourage an interdisciplinary study of issues relevant to teaching and leadership in Christian education. Competent and Committed Faculty. Our richest resource is our faculty. Representing a diversity of experience, research and teaching interests, our well-respected faculty offer a breadth of benefits to our students: scholarly wisdom, practical ministry guidance and personal mentoring, to name a few. Our faculty care for students both inside and outside of class and are committed to cultivating a community of both academic excellence and spiritual growth. The Resources of a Top Christian University. Students in our programs benefit from the resources of Biola University, including vast library holdings, access to relevant academic databases, and access to elective courses within Talbot, the Cook School of Intercultural Studies and Rosemead School of Psychology, which also offer doctoral programs. Research Focus. We are committed to equipping our students with the tools they need to apply current research and develop new research to strengthen the practice of Christian education. A Diverse Student Body. The diversity of cultural, educational and ministry experience our students bring to the classroom enriches our discussion and stimulates our thinking. Our program has served students from, and had graduates go out and serve in teaching and educational leadership roles in 25 countries across the world, including: Australia, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Myanmar, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Singapore, Swaziland, Taiwan, Tanzania, Uganda, Ukraine, and the United States. Spiritual Formation for Academic Teaching and Leadership. We embed spiritual formation activities across the program and within coursework. The goal is to grow students in their relationship with God in the midst of academic work, equipping them to be spiritually vital leaders and teachers. 3 3

Earn a Doctorate that Works for You Our Ph.D. and Ed.D programs are designed to work around your needs and schedules, with modular and minimal residency options for those currently working in education professions full- or part-time. Our program allows students to focus on one of two concentrations: Christian Higher Education Leadership. For current and developing leaders and administrators in Christian higher education roles, we offer modified-residential Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs, allowing them to continue in leadership where they are while pursuing their doctoral studies with us. Teaching Foundations and Christian Formation. This concentration addresses methods for promoting spiritual growth and transformation in education and strengthening educational and ministry efforts with children, youth, college students, adults, within church, school/college, and family contexts. 4 6 I am blessed to be part of intellectually challenging group of people at Talbot who Annie George Ph.D., 2010, Professor, Faith Theological Seminary, Manakala, Kerala, India are committed to God and fellow human beings. Professors walk their talk and show how much they care for my academic pursuit as well as my total well-being. I cherish my time at Talbot knowing that even after graduation, the community at Talbot continue to support to fulfill God s plan in my life.

The program is large enough to offer a variety of rigorous and stimulating courses by an excellent faculty, yet small enough to foster meaningful relationships among professors, staff, and students. The leaders of the program are equally committed to supporting students academic achievement, spiritual growth, personal challenges, and success in future employment. I continue to benefit from every aspect of this fine educational opportunity. Dr. Sharon Short Ph.D., 2011, Adjunct Faculty 7 8
